Tutor canceled lessons!

grassisgreener2015 · 10/02/2025 08:13

AIBU to think our (now ex) tutor has behaved unreasonably?

Our 11 plus tutor charges monthly in advance and I stupidly forgot to pay for February's lessons on time. She did remind me once about the invoice but it just slipped my mind as it's been a really busy few weeks.

We turned up for our lesson on Friday and she actually turned us away and had arranged for another family to take our place! I feel really embarrassed as the other family are from our school and they were there when she sent us away.

We've been having lessons since September and I've only paid late once on one other occasion. We've cancelled very few lessons and we're really pleased with our child's progress.

I think the tutor has been really impatient and quite frankly, rude! Surely someone working with children should be kinder than this and could have given us some leeway?

OP posts:

I am particularly exercised by the OP’s comment that the tutor apparently isn’t fit to work with children…but only after the OP was taken off her client list for failure to pay what was owed. An appalling slur on the tutor’s professional good name and all because some entitled ‘busy mum’ wouldn’t pay her on time.

phoenixmum · 10/02/2025 11:35

It did occur to me that the fake post is actually by a tutor and is a general message to the public at large …

Agree. It's appalling.

Lowkey28 · 10/02/2025 11:39

Seemed ok to work with children when she had her child’s place haha

Clearinguptheclutter · 10/02/2025 11:41

Tutor was right however she should have explained that another family had taken the a lot before you set out

Why so unpleasant?

I'm a busy working mum who made a mistake.

I'll have to look for a new tutor.

I accept I made a mistake. It's a pity the tutor isn't more understanding but maybe that's why she's no longer a class teacher. I do understand that she has bills to pay and I wasn't planning to never pay the invoice, I'm not a thief and i wasnt expecting lessons for free! I do accept she won't be continuing with us though. Such a shame.

No you're a self centred prick who thinks the world revolves around you and your precious child!

BunnyLake · 10/02/2025 11:43

I voted YNBU (I must be the 1% 🤦‍♀️) but only because I think she could have sent you an email or text confirming your lessons have been stopped. You were most certainly unreasonable though not to have paid on time or made yourself a reminder on your phone. You wouldn't be happy about your employer's forgetting to pay you, it’s the same thing.

SamPoodle123 · 10/02/2025 11:43

Did you apologise to her? I would offer to pay for lessons a month ahead if you REALLY want her back...or even two months ahead! No way I would take someone back if they kept forgetting to pay me, unless going forward they paid a month ahead at least for sessions.

Sparklfairy · 10/02/2025 11:44

I just feel that someone this unkind and impatient should not be working with children to be honest. She's left our child with no tutor and they're now disadvantaged compared to their friends (grammar area). They are so keen to take the 11 plus and it seems so wrong for her to be punishing a child for my small mistake.

Realistically, what do you think she should have done instead? Keep teaching your child in the hope you might one day feel like paying?

Nowthesaidmother · 10/02/2025 11:46

She's left our child with no tutor @grassisgreener2015

No you did that, this is clearly on you for not paying.

She reminded you. She warned you that non payment meant cancellation.

She probably thought you had cancelled her seeing as you weren't paying.

Of course she got a new family in your place, it's hilarious and ridiculous you don't understand any of this!

BunnyLake · 10/02/2025 11:47

Spirallingdownwards · 10/02/2025 11:11

She has admitted that the reminder email does indeed state that the lesson would be cancelled if payment was not made. No ambiguity at all. Businesses don't have time nor should they need to make time to say btw what I said before remains the case

Ah I didn’t see that bit so said tutor could have let her know. OP is entirely at fault in this. That’s the risk you take when you don’t take a bill reminder seriously.

Why the passive aggressive “maybe that’s my she’s no longer a classroom teacher”, what do you mean by that?

When you were turning up to a free lesson as you hadn’t paid, did it not nudge your memory that you hadn’t paid?

Motnight · 10/02/2025 11:48

Have you posted about your forgetfulness in paying the tutor before?

BunnyLake · 10/02/2025 11:49

You can also set up a regular transfer on the banking apps. Not a d/d or s/o just an easily to set up/cancel regular transfer.

She did - “ I can now see that her email reminder did say that if the invoice was not paid, lessons would be cancelled”

Sorry. In that case the tutor acted 100% correctly

Lowkey28 · 10/02/2025 11:50

Post about tutoring and spelt cancelled incorrectly

the irony

Yea, but if I was the tutor, I would have already lost trust with the client if they kept forgetting to pay....so I would not trust them setting up bank transfers and if they wanted sessions back, I would only agree if payment was done prior to (at least until trust is built back up!).

LOL

I'll guess you wont mind if your employer pays you late this month then :)

RadStag · 10/02/2025 11:53

haha maybe OP goes to the hairdressers and walks out without paying and tries to get on trains without paying too

Sixtygoingonthirty · 10/02/2025 11:54

did you turn up having still not paid? Surely if you had paid, albeit late, she would have let you know the lessons had been cancelled?

Chanel05 · 10/02/2025 11:55

YABU

They are providing a service. You did not pay for that service on time, despite a reminder. You have been late to pay in the past. They obviously have a waiting list and think you aren't reliable. Of course they ceased your services.

I expect you were given terms and conditions to say that the contract would end and they would no longer tutor your child at the start of the contract if you did not pay on time, so it's on you to uphold your side or you have consequences.

Sunat45degrees · 10/02/2025 11:55

Had yu paid Feb's invoice by the time you turned up?! Because if not, yuou are even more in the wrong.

chocorabbit · 10/02/2025 11:56

Could you afford to offer to pay her let's say 3 months in advance as you really value her and don't want to forget again?

Pumpkinpie1 · 10/02/2025 11:59

You are the one that’s rude OP . Not paying on time on more than one occasion.
Being busy is no excuse The tutor was right . You sound incredibly entitled .
This is your fault but your unwillingness to apologise and accept your mistakes is very telling.
