Would you rather do a load of laundry every few days or 2-4 in a row over a day- or two

Just having this discussion with my mum.

She's the type to always want an empty laundry basket and it bothers her to have a full one / or anything in it really.

I let it build up and do it all over the weekend. It would stress me out to be constantly doing laundry / putting away laundry.

We have enough clothes to do this and I use a dryer. For example this weekend, I've done 4 loads of laundry. My mum would have done that during the week. It makes no sense to me because I like to have all my DD's school uniform clean for the week ahead.

Exactly this question occupies my thoughts way more than it should. I've no idea what the correct answer is. Sorry!

RiskyReels · 09/02/2025 16:54

All in one day at the weekend, and clean clothes put away for the week ahead. Forget about laundry until the next weekend! I wouldn't like having stuff hanging up drying all the time and weekdays are already busy enough.

PullTheBricksDown · 09/02/2025 16:54

I prefer one load a day on days where I can fit that in. I don't use a dryer.

MumonabikeE5 · 09/02/2025 16:54

I want to do as much as possible in one day. I like to get the drying and folding and into drawers done too.

ProfessorLeveretGrey · 09/02/2025 16:55

I expect it depends on your other commitments.

When working I did it all on a Saturday. Now I am retired I do a load every day or every other day.

washerr · 09/02/2025 16:55

It's also easier to do laundry when you have enough to do

Friday night all the uniforms in and washed for the week.

Then on a Monday or Tuesday, all the other clothes, however many loads it takes.

If I get on a roll then the bedsheets and towels too.

SquirrelRed · 09/02/2025 16:55

I do it all over the weekend. Darks on a Saturday, whites on a Sunday.

Upstartled · 09/02/2025 16:56

I'm pretty much at 2 loads a day. Leaving it for three days would result in chaos.

Moveoverdarlin · 09/02/2025 16:57

I hate doing laundry back to back, load after load, it’s too much in one go. I tend to do a load every few days.

Deeperthantheocean · 09/02/2025 16:57

What's an empty basket lol 😆 No matter which strategy I use it makes no difference, always another pile! Xx

FartyAnimal · 09/02/2025 16:58

We have a little utility cupboard/room with the hot water cylinder in - I can dry one load in there on a clothes horse at a time without resorting to the tumble dryer, so I do a wash every couple of days or so.

MissDeborah · 09/02/2025 16:58

All done in one go
Can't bear washing hanging indoors drying all the time-looks so messy

Wash on Fridays, hang on airer, finish in TD Sat am
Done

Ghostsmindgate · 09/02/2025 16:58

I do it as soon as I've got enough for a full load because 1. I try not to use my dryer and use a drying rack to save money and so need to have space, 2. I'm disabled and need to pace myself.
In the summer I do it slightly differently in that I try to dry it all outside on the line and so do it around the weather forecast.
I have enough school uniform etc to cover the full week if need be.

Funykeudfh · 09/02/2025 17:00

I dont want to waste my weekends doing housework of any sort!

So I have a cleaner who comes once a week when I'm working from the office and I do my laundry on my working from home days. Then I enjoy my weekends. We have enough uniforms/clothes etc to do this without worry though.

PeloMom · 09/02/2025 17:03

I can’t stand it when it all piles up so I do a load or 2 every 2-3 days
ETA- I use a dryer except if it’s hot enough for stuff to dry the same day outside hanging.

No did you not read my post?! I do all the washing and drying on my 3 working from home days. My cleaner cleans one of the other days and then we just do the usual tidying of the kitchen/dishwasher etc as needed. I don't iron a thing.

😁 guilty.

If I could afford/could find a cleaner who also did all my washing etc I'd be buzzing and would sign them up in a heartbeat.

Same😂 i don't have a dryer so have to get it out of the way as fast as possible. Can't afford a few days worth, there'd be nowhere to put it😬

snoopyfanaccountant · 09/02/2025 17:10

We have a Kallax unit in the utility room and the washing gets sorted into that. Unless one of the tubs is full earlier in the week, I tend to do all the washing on a Friday or Saturday. I have a heated airer plus a long airer and a dehumidifier and I don't want to put the heated airer on for just a few items. I only use the tumble dryer in the winter for towels and bedding or if it's wet for days on end in summer. I dry outside when I can.

NotMaroonButRaspberry · 09/02/2025 17:12

I can't imagine having any freedom to choose really.

We are a family with 3 dc and dogs and everyone is very active and sporty - I wear uniforms for work, the dc swim/dance/football, one is doing PE GCSE and coaches other sports for dofe, we have guests really often so always have extra towels and sheets.

We do one, if not 2 loads as standard every single day and there is no way leaving it to build up would work as we'd then have to do back to back washes with no way of getting it all dry. (Plus everyone's sports kits would stink/go mouldy)

We are lucky to have quite a roomy utility though, so have 2 airers up all the time getting stuff dry on rotation.

Gliblet · 09/02/2025 17:13

We don't have a tumble dryer so I try to space laundry loads out enough to not have airers covered in wet laundry in every room, every weekend 😆

That said we all do sporting activities several times a week so usually it's sports kit washed and dried on weekdays, other clothes and underwear at weekends, things like towels and bedding whenever there's the opportunity.
