Would you rather do a load of laundry every few days or 2-4 in a row over a day- or two

Just having this discussion with my mum.

She's the type to always want an empty laundry basket and it bothers her to have a full one / or anything in it really.

I let it build up and do it all over the weekend. It would stress me out to be constantly doing laundry / putting away laundry.

We have enough clothes to do this and I use a dryer. For example this weekend, I've done 4 loads of laundry. My mum would have done that during the week. It makes no sense to me because I like to have all my DD's school uniform clean for the week ahead.

A load every other day simply because I don't use the tumble dryer unless it's desperate and it would be too much washing to have on the airer (assuming it's damp outside which is a very common occurance)

On a warm blowy day I'll wash everything in sight 😂

Louise121806 · 09/02/2025 18:54

I do one load a day, first thing. Then leave it in the maiden to dry whilst I'm out. Finish in dryer and put away. Having said that, still got 3-4 loads to do at the weekend with bedding, bathroom mats, towels etc so mine is always on. Can't win 😭

Baggyprincess · 09/02/2025 18:59

Work full time and clubs on Saturdays. Both DC like a PJ day on a Sunday, so it’s become wash day too by default. Clothes are all done on a Sunday, bedding and towels as people ‘produce’ them!

Baggyprincess · 09/02/2025 19:00

And occasional additional washes as life demands - such as when I was with an ill child, so everything needed washing afterwards to reduce the chance of infection.

stayathomer · 09/02/2025 19:03

Daily so can hang out and use tumble dryer as little as possible (it’s my vice!)

Is this on the genre of...?

'Would you rather fight 100 duck-sized horses or 1 horse-sized duck?'

Onlyvisiting · 09/02/2025 20:14

I run a load whenever I have one. Do back to back loads to catch up with towels/sofa covers etc as convenient. Do everything I can find when the forecast is good enough to dry outdoors!
I don't have enough clothes to save it up for too long, also Sods law I'd that if I do the machine will break/power cut etc.

I don't iron and rarely fold though. Most my clean washing lives in doom piles except for when I have a flurry of organisation every so often and get it put away.

RedRumRoams · 09/02/2025 20:14

I would love the ability to leave it but absolutely no chance. I pretty much have to wash every day at least once.

crackfoxy · 09/02/2025 20:22

I do at least 1 wash daily. Hate having piles to sort out! 4 of us.

Whatanidiot123 · 09/02/2025 20:25

I have a couple of set washes - whites on Friday night, school uniforms and swim stuff Saturday afternoon. Otherwise I work from home often so just keep on top
of it during the work day. Downside is that there is always laundry drying on the rack. Sheets and towels we do once a fortnight.

notnorman · 09/02/2025 21:07

I suppose if your washer is in the kitchen you might want it all done out the way.
We have a big laundry so it gets chucked in there and the door is shut on it!

Simonjt · 09/02/2025 21:09

I like to do as many loads as possible on the same day, my husband likes an empty basket, unfortunately that means he does it before I do, what a shame I miss out on laundry.

Oblomov25 · 09/02/2025 21:35

I put a wash on as soon as there's enough. I empty the bin and the recycling as soon as it's full. I just do things as soon as they need doing, because it makes life so much easier.

Oblomov25 · 09/02/2025 21:36

We only need to do a wash every 2-3 days. Then one Friday night with all school clothes and work clothes. Then bedding at the weekend.

CherryMarigold · 09/02/2025 22:07

I feel like I'm constantly doing washing, at least two loads a day plus a small quick load of sports kit.
I've got a huge back log of towels and bedding to do from people staying over for Christmas.

Hattieandcake · 09/02/2025 22:11

2 loads a day it’s such a mess in winter but it can’t be left !!!

RazzzzzzzzzlllllllleDaaazzzzllle · 09/02/2025 22:16

Slightly off topic but a dehumidifier in the utility has been life changing to dry things in the winter months. Takes no time at all with it on!

MaryGreenhill · 09/02/2025 22:35

I do a load of washing as soon as l have enough clothes . I can't bear loads of dirty washing.

Threecraws · 09/02/2025 22:40

In the summer I space it out more as I do it first thing then put on the line, but at this time of year when it's going in the drier I'm more likely to let it build up and do more towards the end of the week

IMustDoMoreExercise · 09/02/2025 22:48

Wednesday I wash my husband's clothes

Saturday I wash my clothes

Sunday I wash the sheets and towels

I can only wash what I can fit on the clothes horses.

I can't imagine having any freedom to choose really.

We are a family with 3 dc and dogs and everyone is very active and sporty - I wear uniforms for work, the dc swim/dance/football, one is doing PE GCSE and coaches other sports for dofe, we have guests really often so always have extra towels and sheets.

We do one, if not 2 loads as standard every single day and there is no way leaving it to build up would work as we'd then have to do back to back washes with no way of getting it all dry. (Plus everyone's sports kits would stink/go mouldy)

We are lucky to have quite a roomy utility though, so have 2 airers up all the time getting stuff dry on rotation.

This. 3DC numerous sports and activities. And can’t stand the thought of dirty stuff festering in the wash basket. I try to dry outside where possible and dryer is in the shed so it’s not hanging around the house. I do at least one wash a day but with bed clothes and towels most days I’d do two. If I only washed once or twice a week I’d do nothing else those days

MumChp · 09/02/2025 22:52

I do the laundry at Fridays. So once a week.

Either, please.

Unfortunately, circumstances dictate that I can easily to that much in a day, almost every day.

When you have less to do than I do, it works better to do it all in a day with good drying conditions in the summer and just not let it build up at all in the winter or during prolonged spells of wet weather.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 09/02/2025 23:09

It depends on the time of year. If it's good drying weather I might well do more than one load in a day, but if it's going to be hanging up inside the house I'd rather not have too much hanging up at once.
