Ainu to think Angela Rayners has been set up to fail on her 1.5m homes target ?
you can barely get planning permission through for a small extension in under 10 weeks let alone 1.5 m new homes
Every month that goes by the shortage compounds
I wonder if Kier has set her up to fail

Its not unreasonable to expect someone with the right qualifications and experience to be in the role.

I don't recall anyone complaining about Oliver Dowden being an unsuitable deputy PM because being a spad and PR guy weren't good qualifications and experience, or about Michael Gove being unsuitable for Housing secretary since he was an author and journalist. The bile that Rayner
gets is 99% snobbery and misogyny.

Catsandcheese · 09/02/2025 14:53

It is so disappointing to see at title like this on a thread on a forum which is supposed to be supportive towards women.

It is weird on the one hand to read complaints that the government won't make their targets, yet on the other people whining about 'not in my back yard'.

I guess if they do build 1.49M houses they will have failed, yes?

Maybe brexit had a hand in reducing the construction workdforce, when you were voting for that did you all not realise what was going to happen? You were told...

Applesonthelawn · 09/02/2025 14:54

She's way more savvy than him, so I doubt it.

Saggyknickers · 09/02/2025 14:55

soupyspoon · 09/02/2025 12:57

I dont disagree. I do hope yes
Im a labour voter and have been really disappointed so far, but I still hope

I also dont care if government ministers are denigrated if they havent done a good job, male or female. Thats my beef with a lot of the posts here.

Its dangerous to say you criticise those in power simply because they are female

I agree.

AR has got off lightly with "Angela from accounts". And it's very important that female politicians are held to the same standards as men.

Labour voters don't seem to have a problem with denigrating Truss, May, Thatcher etc.

ThatFlyIsMySpiritAnimal · 09/02/2025 14:55

Making it easier to get planning permission will make fuck all difference. It’s already easy to get permission for housing development. The problem is developers land banking and building shitty overpriced houses when they eventually do build them. Also not enough planners thanks to all the cuts to local government.

Are you joking, both Dowden and Gove have been absolutely slaughtered for their utter incompetence. Not just on forums and TV, do you ever read John Crace, he is hilarious

Doesnt anyone remember the utter shit show of the Brexit negotiations, it was so bad it was laughable and quite rightly they were crucified for it.

JoyousGreyOrca · 09/02/2025 14:59

@anyoneforhockey No that is not proof that as you so delightfully put it, Angela Rayner is thick as mince.
What it shows are two commentators repeating untruths, rubbishing clips of interviews with Rayner e.g. accusing her of being thick because she trots out the usual politician phrases.
You are accusing Angela Rayner of being thick because she is a working class woman. If she had a posh accent and had attended Roedean and Cambridge, you would take a very different tact.

They admitted later they had not understood Northern Ireland and the significance of the Good Friday agreement. Utter incompetence.

Between these thread titles and posters falling over themselves to explain away nazi salutes mumsnet is really becoming the pit of vipers it was always accused of being.

It's part of a deliberate strategy.

Anything any government even remotely left-wing does is pulled apart - "haven't solved fourteen years worth of problems in eight months. Terrible....."

Then you elect (or don't elect) President Musk to rip apart the whole government, remove data protection, financial regulation, decimate health, universities, scientific research, workers rights, all with the aim of making super-rich people even richer.

ManchesterGirl2 · 09/02/2025 12:29

Why are you using that misogynistic title?

Because she is out of her depth.

HellsBalls · 09/02/2025 15:01

Tomorrowisanewday · 09/02/2025 14:30

As previous posters have said, planning permission is only part of the problem. I work in construction, and work on both private developments and developments for RSLs. Regardless of the sector that is being built (housing, commercial, healthcare, schools etc), we dont have the workforce to deliver. That has been happening for 10 years, but a combination of an aging workforce, not enough young people being attracted into the industry, and even our European colleagues going home (was happening before Brexit), this target is likely to be failed because of the labour shortage

Fair comments. However you can be taught to lay bricks competently (if slowly) in 6 months. Most other trades can be done under the eye of an experienced supervisor. Houses can also be made pre-fab and only finished on site.
Up the wages on the building trade and make people employees, not pseudo self employed, introduce more colleges and Skillcenters to learn the trade, etc.
It can be done, but it won’t be.

Absolutely horrific

Plus the MP for Dover not knowing or understanding Dover's significance as a major port!!!!

But you know, we mustnt call people names

1457bloom · 09/02/2025 15:05

I prefer Angela from accounts.

HPFA · 09/02/2025 15:07

I thought if I worked hard and saved my money I could have a little house with a scrap of garden and some peace and quiet. I don’t ask for much, just some peace and space and natural beauty.

Funnily enough, younger people would also like the chance to have a secure home. Are they supposed to sacrifice that dream so you can look at a field?

Presumably the nice little house you imagined was also a field once?

MellowCritic · 09/02/2025 15:07

Are you kidding me the biggest lie was Labour saying they were going to build more then the Conservatives did and blah blah blah... there has not been one piece of land that can fit a toe nail into that they haven't build on near where I live, for years, blocks , and blocks of small flats, or houses no extra doctors , no extra schools. Just 1000s of flats, who exactly are all these 1000000 that need housing and will the government accept we don't need any more houses we need less ppl.

So you are comfortable with misogyny and classism.
Got to keep those working class women in their place?

Yes but so many people complaining about immigration.

I dont actually agree with the OPs position, I hope and like to think we can get more housing built and this will be successful

However horrible or denigrating nick names for government ministers is nothing new, its not misogyny, nor should it be reduced. We have a long long political history of satire and sarcasm about those in power, going right back to when the printing press made this more available to the public

Its exactly the same as 30p Lee, or 'call me Dave', or any number of ones that Ive since long forgotten. Tarzan anyone? Two Jags? Welsh Windbag?

30p - refers to something specific he said
Tarzan - hardly unflattering
Two Jags - takes the piss out of the cars
Called me Dave - something specific he said

...from Accounts
...from Housing

Both designed to reduce the women concerned to stereotypical, frequently low paid female employment.

Bluebellwood129 · 09/02/2025 15:08

She's set herself up to fail with her lack of knowledge of the construction industry. Starmer will sit back and enjoy her humiliation.

That was the point most "career" politicians do not have the experience and life skills for the roles they are given regardless of party,

Would you like an inexperienced plumber, electrcian or doctor working for you?

Unfortunately people seem to vote for their politician based on what they say not what they are qualified for, talk and pledges are not legally binding...

HPFA · 09/02/2025 15:12

1457bloom · 09/02/2025 15:08

Yes but so many people complaining about immigration.

It's just an excuse.

I was working on some local newspapers from the 70s and 80s once and every one had a letter from someone saying "why are we building houses? Stop immigration instead!" That was a period when immigration dropped from around 70,000 to 50,000 a year.

Saggyknickers · 09/02/2025 15:12

Im keen to see vast vast building of social housing properties, then regulations around private market rents and the use of guarantors to be phased out. These are real sticking blocks to people finding private rentals.

You do realise LL's are getting out in droves? Or haven't you noticed the massive increase in homelessness? Having a guarantor is one of the only avenues left for LL's to have a minuscule chance of recouping their money or getting bad tenants out.

Use your brain - what do you think bringing in even more arbitrary rules will achieve? As others have pointed out, with the plans to bring in much stricter EPC rules there will be barely any LL's left as it is. Spending £30K on insulating a house isn't possible for most small time LL's. Especially if you are not allowed to increase the rent to recoup your costs added to having a long and costly journey to get your property back when your tenants stop paying rent.

My db has just had to spend almost £10K getting his house back in order after the tenants left. It was wrecked. They lived there for a year paying £1000pcm. You do the figures. Obviously he won't be repeating that and is selling up. Ditto several other people I know.

It isn't worth it for smaller LL's any more, hence they are all getting out (this isn't something that's going to happen - it's happening and set to get worse).

Does anyone know how many she has built so far? She should have built 150k so far.

The faux outrage at OP’s title is simply a way to deflect attention from the fact that tis government is atrocious, even worse the last one. And Rayner is of low calibre and she’s being found out.

tis government is atrocious, even worse the last one.

So the gov in power since July ( just over 6 months) is worse than the shit show of Truss, Sunak and Boris and May?

BOLLOCKS.

This is what I was thinking. Agreed!

Political satire seems needed - if you don’t laugh you’ll cry.

So many things in this country make NO sense. My parents are selling their current home and very much wanted to build a home. They didn’t want to build a McMansion but a tasteful home which was in keeping with the local surroundings. Even with a budget of £900k they settled against the idea as it was just too big of an uphill battle and too risky. Spent about £25k on consultation fees and surveyors and the like.

No common sense.
