Angela from Housing

Ainu to think Angela Rayners has been set up to fail on her 1.5m homes target ?
you can barely get planning permission through for a small extension in under 10 weeks let alone 1.5 m new homes
Every month that goes by the shortage compounds
I wonder if Kier has set her up to fail

There are a lot of rural small towns with long waiting lists for housing, which is one factor to consider with location of housing. There are many young, working families on low wages who are reliant on extended family in their home area for childcare, etc., who are struggling to get access to affordable family housing - they can’t just move to the cities into regenerated derelict buildings. The issues are so much more nuanced and complex than what is being described by some on this thread. Older people living longer and remaining in family-sized homes (which I’m not saying they shouldn’t, it’s their choice) have led to shortages, more significant numbers of people moving from more expensive cities to rural areas have raised house prices, Thatcher’s right-to-buy decreased social housing stock, etc. This isn’t as much about building on green fields, as meeting the demands for housing in specific areas. How many NIMBYs will preach whilst also dwelling in housing built on green space over the last 70 years or so?

One of the major blockages in building homes has been because of bureaucracy, delays and incompetence in the planning system, meaning much-needed housing (including affordable homes and other infrastructure) are delayed for years. Rayner, as the Secretary of State for Housing, is already addressing this, intervening with local councils and calling in new housing project proposals that have been stuck and/or lost in the system for years.

It’s the same old, same old bores with their sneering comments on Rayner - I think it just drives her on. Anyone who saw her expertly and calmly wipe the floor with ‘angry, shouty man’ Tory Alex Burghart in PMQs a few months ago, will know what I mean.

And finally, it seems that it needs stating yet again: the unions are the workers. If you’re someone who values or benefits from a fair wage, health & safety in the workplace, employment laws, holiday leave, etc., at all, then you should be able to recognise that the unions are important to many.

Only about 23% of workers are in unions!

A good way to get the housing dilemma solved is to build 'social housing estates' on the outskirts of most towns and villages, just like they did before.

Completely ridiculous to use the private sector to prop up/supply social housing - it's a long-term public investment not something shareholders stake there money on.

Compulsory purchase on a National Level for all landbanked land and Public Loans for any Local Housing Authority to build Social Housing on any of this land.

The thought of this as a possibility got the landbanking property speculators off their arses in my neck of the woods.

Meanwhile the OBR, the owner of the rules that the government has set out its stall by, have halved their growth projections for the year since November ‘24. The UK economy is now expected to grow by just 0.7% in 2025, with inflation expected to rise sharply.

@@adorablecat - actually Angela Rayner was elected by the membership to be Deputy PM.

Not a crashed economy though as has been claimed

And? Which industries do they tend to be more active in, and why do you think that is? Union action throughout history has benefited more than 23% of workers and they continue to benefit and support more than just its active members now.

I'll be surprised if we even reach 0.70. I don't think this government are finished with their crazy anti growth policies yet.

Also, she isn't "Angela from Housing" - she's the deputy PM and calling her that nickname is quite misogynistic.

Yes it is. It's like the one Rachel Reeves always gets too. Always uttered by Reform voters (along with the winter fuel payments).

And while I'm on, why does the BBC always call the government "Labour" as if they are in opposition?

TheHateIsNotGood · 09/02/2025 19:05

I'm giving Ange from Housing a chance. It's a shedload of shit to be sifted through that's been going on since before the Tories were in charge; Ange shouldn't be the scapegoat for this bucket of shit.

You go Ange my lovely, stay strong and if all they can do is criticize your clothes, then it shows weakness on their part.

Build, build, build Social Housing Estates and tax penalize the developers who've landbanked their land to pay for it. Simples.

anyoneforhockey · 09/02/2025 19:14

@BurntBroccoli And while I'm on, why does the BBC always call the government "Labour" as if they are in opposition?

I've no idea.

They won't call Hamas "terrorists"

And they persisted in calling the "Pakistani Muslim Rape Gangs" " Asian Grooming Gangs" for some time, much to the chagrin of some Chinese friends of mine.

TheNuthatch · 09/02/2025 16:43

Yes true. I'm not sure any of them are more 'corrupt and dodgy' than Jas Athwal though. He's on another level and still an MP.

according to this, he was cleared?

MN seems to be flooded with a load of rightwing propaganda at the moment. Anything to trash labour and push the dodgy right wing narrative.

Absolutely all over social media, not just Mumsnet.
All the local rags seem to be supporting Reform and a right wing agenda.

TheNuthatch · 09/02/2025 20:05

My original point was that I cant give Starmer credit for taking action against Andrew Gwynne when this cretin Athwal is still an MP.

EasternStandard · 09/02/2025 20:08

Absolutely all over social media, not just Mumsnet.

Mn isn't mostly pro Labour anymore so those posters are probably noticing it

It's not surprising given the fall in support generally

Yes agree with this. We need to at least replace all the sold off RTB stock.

The planning needs to be careful however so you don't end up with the awful concrete sink estates that were built in the 1970s (a lot of which have now been demolished in the north).

It needs to be something like the post war council semis - good solid houses with gardens and plenty of green space in between.

It's becoming quite pro Reform. Not a good development in my eyes but you might disagree

0ohLarLar · 09/02/2025 20:19

At least they are openly accepting that the only way to bring down housing cost relative to wages is a significant increase in supply.

To be honest though, at some stage I assume they will have to do what happened in the 60s and 70s.

Read NHBC homes through the decades. There's a good graphic in there where you can see all the peaks in housebuilding are under Labour governments.

EasternStandard · 09/02/2025 20:27

@bemoresloth you might be on other threads idk. I think it won't be completely Labour anymore. Which is not a surprise looking at the polls and public sentiment.

Of course he has. She will be the fall guy. She’s a bit like Harris who was put in charge of the US border, when her handlers knew she had neither the intelligence, nor the political ability to get something like that done. Rayner is in same league.

Two Tier has his favourites. Rachel from accounts and Red Miliband. The former trashes the economy to give billions to the latter to piss up the wall. And the country just plunges deeper into oblivion.

Buckle up everyone. It’s gonna be a rough ride.

MN has never been pro Labour, it was always quite balanced. Since the election was called, there has been a rise in Reform posters with an anti Labour bias.

Maybe Reform doesn't worry you.
