Ainu to think Angela Rayners has been set up to fail on her 1.5m homes target ?
you can barely get planning permission through for a small extension in under 10 weeks let alone 1.5 m new homes
Every month that goes by the shortage compounds
I wonder if Kier has set her up to fail

It's also bad form to try and excuse Andrew Gwynne's appalling behaviour by saying Reform/Tories are worse

SpanThatWorld · 09/02/2025 12:19

YABU to recycle a snarky little insult used to belittle one woman so that you can belittle another.

Agree.

So disheartened with women tearing other women down.

Total misogyny.

mallorytowers8282 · 09/02/2025 16:57

JimHalpertsWife · 09/02/2025 12:20

Also, she isn't "Angela from Housing" - she's the deputy PM and calling her that nickname is quite misogynistic.

Agree.

JoyousGreyOrca · 09/02/2025 16:58

And classist

Upstartled · 09/02/2025 17:00

Angela from housing is sexist. What you mean is the lying, hypocritical, deputy Prime Minister.

Charlize43 · 09/02/2025 17:01

Nobody gets their knickers in a twist over 'Two Tier Kier' - which everyone uses.

Double standards much?

Two Tier Keir isn't predicated on his sex though.

Angela from Housing, Rachel from Accounts is. It's a form of "nickname" which is specifically used because these positions are currently held by women.

It's why we've never has Rishi from Accounts or Brown from Housing or whatever

Yes! Would you prefer something from the Guardian?

I don't think the Guardian had advisory meetings with Truss and Kwarteng in the build up to their budget.

soupyspoon · 09/02/2025 13:06

Given that in the last government the vast majority of senior ministers were men and they were denigrated and name called over arnd over (quite rightly, particularly around Brexit negotiations, remember that?) Im not sure your post stands up to scrutiny.

I was responding the the OP and the way their post title is misleading and somewhat trite. Personally i never refer to any politician from any party by their nickname, I just use their last name. The cult of "Boris" was a prime example of this, always called him Johnson and never used his stage name. Running or ruining a country is a serious business, criticise them, scrutinise them and their decisions but I don't buy into name calling or nick names It gets unfunny and tedious very quickly.

MN seems to be flooded with a load of rightwing propaganda at the moment. Anything to trash labour and push the dodgy right wing narrative.

Labour are doing a great job of trashing themselves

@TheNuthatch has that one, not just the sackings but policies

lifeonmars100 · 09/02/2025 17:15

TheNuthatch · 09/02/2025 16:27

Labour are doing a great job of trashing themselves don't you think? Have you seen the latest sacking?

At least there was a sacking, who remembers the seemingly endless scandal under Johnson?

TheNuthatch · 09/02/2025 17:22

lifeonmars100 · 09/02/2025 17:15

Yes of course we all remember, and they lost the election because of it. Whataboutery does not make it ok! Labour have already lost 3 ministers to scandal in 7 months aswell as all the Lord Ali, freebies etc. As I said upthread, Jas Athwal is also still sat on the green benches.

Why has the MSM not reported that Reeves has crashed the economy?

They have gone very quiet instead.

Your lettuce must have wilted by now

You are in a tiny minority if you think Reeves hasn't damaged the economy and I repeat yet again: by the same metrics Labour accused Truss of crashing the economy, they have crashed it. Gilts were worse under Reeves than Truss.
You denying it doesn't change facts. I have linked to several sources, including the Guardian.
Honestly you are making yourself look desperate if you keep denying. No-one thinks Labour are doing a good job with the economy, Labour MPs included!!!!

Feelingathomenow · 09/02/2025 17:29

Imo they’re building too many homes already in the wrong place. Labour have fuck all respect for the countryside, they have no desire to understand it -their main voters are city bound.

The houses won’t be affordable. The countryside is fine, stick up more starter flats in cities where there are more facilities and infrastructure.

Address the reasons why we need so many more homes.

maybe look at young people’s communities, eg starter homes like these big (often vastly under occupied) retirement villages. Even better make these mixed communities

MumblesParty · 09/02/2025 17:30

I sincerely hope Angela Raynor does fail. We need fewer people, not more houses. Soon there’ll be no grass left in England.

Sherbs12 · 09/02/2025 17:30

One of the major blockages in building homes has been because of bureaucracy, delays and incompetence in the planning system, meaning much-needed housing (including affordable homes and other infrastructure) are delayed for years. Rayner, as the Secretary of State for Housing, is already addressing this, intervening with local councils and calling in new housing project proposals that have been stuck and/or lost in the system for years.

It’s the same old, same old bores with their sneering comments on Rayner - I think it just drives her on. Anyone who saw her expertly and calmly wipe the floor with ‘angry, shouty man’ Tory Alex Burghart in PMQs a few months ago, will know what I mean.

And finally, it seems that it needs stating yet again: the unions are the workers. If you’re someone who values or benefits from a fair wage, health & safety in the workplace, employment laws, holiday leave, etc., at all, then you should be able to recognise that the unions are important to many.

I agree. I’m sick of seeing fields built on while huge areas of cities are filled with derelict warehouses in areas that would be perfect for working young people. Of course it’s cheaper to plough up a lovely field than dispose of asbestos etc, but soon we’ll have a situation where cities are dead. No one will live, work or shop in town centres. They’ll just drive from their suburban housing estates to out-of-town retail parks, past endless Amazon warehouses en route.

Development has already ruined my village, but I’m sure we can cram a few more disgusting rabbit hutches in. My local woods have been hacked down to make way for a new estate, and a second massive estate has been built at the other end of the village. Now we’ve been told the fields in the centre of the village are going to be built on as well. And will that be enough?! Haha…no, silly, of course it won’t. The main road into town going to have 500 new homes built along it. That road is choked with traffic NOW, so god knows what will happen when an extra 500 cars are added.

I don’t know why we don’t just concrete over the whole of central and southern England and be done with it. I was a fool for working all my life. I thought if I worked hard and saved my money I could have a little house with a scrap of garden and some peace and quiet. I don’t ask for much, just some peace and space and natural beauty. But my reward for working hard and obeying the law is to watch the countryside around me disappear. Sooner or later the field next to me will be built on as well. Looking back, I wish I’d gone into social housing and played the benefit system. I know people like Rayner hate my guts. She hates peoples like me, and so do most lefties. Deep down, it delights them to imagine all us horrible middle-class NIMBYs having our lives ruined.

That's the issue - many decisions of stupid governments can be repaired to some extend by next government, policies can be reversed, new tax regimes implemented etc. This lot will concrete our green belt and we will never get it back.

This is what scares me too. It's irreversible.
