To let dog poo in the street

AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street?

We live near a field and DH usually takes our dog over there. He's going away for a few days so I will solely be walking the dog. My problem is I get very very anxious in the dark, can't see properly even with the torch and it really stresses me out. Like heart/head pounding. Previously I have walked the dog around the estate we live on and he poos on the pavement. Some houses have no front garden and I always feel very guilty as it's so close to their homes. I ALWAYS pick up but you know sometimes it's not perfect. I'm aware of lots of doorbell cameras to. My dog refuses to poo in our garden. So AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street allowing me relax a little that I'm not offending anyone or do I need to wait until it's light. He is used to very early and late walks.

I live in a town centre where there no gutters for my dog to pee/poo in, as they are filled with cars.
And making your dog go into the road is dangerous.
I have a garden, but I can't stop my dog going outside my residence. If she needs to go, she needs to go. She is very old and has dementia.

There is nothing anywhere in Gov literature about making your dog only toilet at home. So I have issue with being told I am a "bad owner" for literally following the rules. I am not following your made up rules.

Nobody said you were a bad owner.

So use the bag under bottom to catch the poo.

Dogs don’t just randomly poo without warning ( friends own 16 yr old sight hounds)
They get into position then poo.

My dog is a small greyhound. Her bum is literally about 2 inches above the floor when she is in position. I bag it, and take it away. That is all I am asked to do, and I do it.

Purplecatshopaholic · 09/02/2025 18:26

Just pick it up. Carry a bottle of water, and wipes, if you are really anal about it (sorry), but generally just bagging it and binning it is totally fine. Non issue. I am not understanding what your concerns are..

Don't be a disgusting pig, pick up your dog's shit!!! 😠 😡

Can't you read?

Bleach doesn't. You need specific enzymes for that.

Well, all I know is the 💩 stops everytime I wash with diluted bleach. The faint bleach odour puts them off, presumably.

No dog should poo on the street or a field, pickup or not. Picking up leaves remnants, it’s disgusting.
You don’t poo on the street and pick it up, so why should your dog? Dog nappies, or some other way that does not involve the public streets.
Grass fields and verges are just as bad.

How about you splat a dog poo on your face then pick it off, see if you still smell it - not completely gone has it…

Edited

You OK, hun?

Is there any reason you are putting a laugh react for every comment I make? Including the one where I said I am autistic?

Klovos · 09/02/2025 18:48

You always clean after your dog. Not doing so should be grounds for not being allowed to have one anymore

DiscoBaIIs · 09/02/2025 18:48

YeOldeGreyhound · 09/02/2025 17:59

It is made up rules. You are telling people (including me) to train my dog to only poo at home.
You have an issue with dogs, their owners, and dog poo. I mean, you even have an issue with people carrying poo in a bag on the street too. Because you don't like seeing poo in a bag, and somehow think it a hazard to shops and houses.

ALL rules were made up from somewhere. Those of us objecting to dog shit on the pavements would like to affect change in this regard, to the extent that it is frowned upon to do so. In the olden days, you weren't even expected to pick up dog poo at all - times have changed due to public pressure. We now need to go further, due to the proloferation of dogs meaning this is really a massive problem, plus as an evolving species we are allowed to think there are better ways of doing things.

The law is an ass. Remember, slavery was legal, segregation was legal, marital rape was legal. Times change, thank goodness. Smoking was allowed in the cinema, on planes, in hospitals. Because people spoke up.

I have just gone and sprayed bleach all over my front garden wall, the fence posts and the pavement in front of my garden path.

YeOldeGreyhound · 09/02/2025 17:11

I pick up her poo. So it is not a problem as I do what is required of me as a responsible dog owner.
Bleaching the street, training my dog to poo only at home, using a dog nappy (I have in the past and she gets UTIs) are all made up rules that don't exist in reality.
The fact I don't follow your own made up rules is your problem, not mine.

It IS a problem though, You are still leaving traces of poo on our pavements,

If you truly believe you have left it as clean as you found it, let the dog poo in your hand, pick it out of your hand with a doggy doo dah bag with your other hand, then put your hand on your face - IF, that is, you're so sure picking it off your hand has left no trace,

That is a really bizarre thing to suggest. I don't put my face to the floor. People also pee on it, they also spit, drop litter etc. Pavements are not sterile places. No one is eating their dinner off of them.
I pick up my dog's poo as required by law. Your own rules are for you to follow, not me. I can't remember getting a leaflet through my door about 'DiscoBalls Guide to Picking Up Do Poo'.

Yes, it's a pre-diluted spritzy bleach spray.

My kid walks in to school through a minefield of dog shit, and piss. As do the other couple of hundred kids. Two minutes later, they are sat in the assembly room on the floor, dirty shoes on the floor, hands on the floor. Little hands that touch everything, rub their eyes, suck their thumbs. Of course pavements aren't sterile, but a shitted on pavement is way way worse than a non-shitted on one.

if you can see the poo, then that is a problem. And I don't like that either. Just because I have a dog does not mean I like to walk in poo too. Sometimes I walk it in the house from my own back garden (it is very long and I am not always on top of it all).

A lot of your comments have honestly made me laugh. I definitely wasn't specifically laughing at you being autistic though because I understand the challenges. I understand rules are important to you, so how about seeing it as a societal 'rule' to also try to have consideration for others? It's not a legal rule as such, but it is something that makes it easier to function as part of society. An example of me being considerate to you could be moving aside or waiting to give you and your dog space if there was some obstruction on the pavement - I don't have to but it's just helpful to do so. I won't be committing a crime if I don't but it made both our lives easier by being considerate. I'm also not saying that you're not a bad owner, more you're a good owner who could potentially be an even better owner if you took on board some views from others.

I tend to use dilute bog standard bleach but on the path only.

Sick of dogs cocking their legs on my gate/post, so trying to stop it.

Fair enough. Our fence needs replaced so trying to avoid making it worse! Good luck.

It is a problem, and I report it to the council. But it is still a problem even when most of it gets picked up, because I can guarantee you, it does not all get picked up. It is not necessary to use our pavements as toilets. People who let their dogs do it are disgusting, legal or not.

There are sprays you can buy that are specifically for deterring dogs from peeing in certain spots. You can get it in Pets at Home.
Probably less harmful than bleach.
