To let dog poo in the street

AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street?

We live near a field and DH usually takes our dog over there. He's going away for a few days so I will solely be walking the dog. My problem is I get very very anxious in the dark, can't see properly even with the torch and it really stresses me out. Like heart/head pounding. Previously I have walked the dog around the estate we live on and he poos on the pavement. Some houses have no front garden and I always feel very guilty as it's so close to their homes. I ALWAYS pick up but you know sometimes it's not perfect. I'm aware of lots of doorbell cameras to. My dog refuses to poo in our garden. So AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street allowing me relax a little that I'm not offending anyone or do I need to wait until it's light. He is used to very early and late walks.

It is a problem, and I report it to the council. But it is still a problem even when most of it gets picked up, because I can guarantee you, it does not all get picked up. It is not necessary to use our pavements as toilets. People who let their dogs do it are disgusting, legal or not.

If my dog needs to go, she needs to go. I pick it up.

No wild animals are fine and have every right, we don’t see fox poo everywhere. There’s dog shit and remnants everywhere. You take the dog out on the street then it is the same as you yourself squatting your own human poop and picking it up, it’s your pet.

I nevertheless understood the shit and pick mentality.

I think it depends on where you live as to how much shit you see from which species.

Where I live on the South coast, I see more fox shit and seagull shit on pavements than dog shit. But I have been in London today and was disgusted at how much dog shit there was on the pavements (and not many fox shits, as far as I could tell).

A lot of your comments have honestly made me laugh. I definitely wasn't specifically laughing at you being autistic though because I understand the challenges. I understand rules are important to you, so how about seeing it as a societal 'rule' to also try to have consideration for others? It's not a legal rule as such, but it is something that makes it easier to function as part of society. An example of me being considerate to you could be moving aside or waiting to give you and your dog space if there was some obstruction on the pavement - I don't have to but it's just helpful to do so. I won't be committing a crime if I don't but it made both our lives easier by being considerate. I'm also not saying that you're not a bad owner, more you're a good owner who could potentially be an even better owner if you took on board some views from others.

I pick up my dog's poo. If it is sloppy, I take water with me (she was very ill last year and it was all liquid).
I am weary of people going on about society rules, as they are unwritten. And sometimes people have taken advantage of me by saying something is a rule, when it is just something they have made up and are trying to bend my behaviour to their will. I am trying to be on top of it at the moment (have been on some course about it - stuff about boundaries etc).
Everyone I know says I am a good dog owner. She has nice food, clothing (old greyhound needs to be warm), toys, lots of love and cuddles, she does not approach other people, I keep her on a lead (she is pretty deaf now so safer for her), she sees the vet when needed. It makes no sense to me to be called a bad owner, or "could do better" (like a school report!) because she happens to get caught short out in public.

OK, I appreciate the reply, and just to absolutely state than none of us are trying to bend or manipulate you there would be a special place in hell, should it exist, for manipulators! As it is, for society to function we do also live by unspoken 'rules' - codes of conduct which are not legal rules or laws, but which just make it easier for us all to get along. I would class not letting your dog empty their bowels/bladder outside someone's house/a cafe/a shop, unless absolutely unavoidable, as one of those rules. I've said several times that I don't think you're a bad owner, it sounds like you care very much about your dog's wellbeing, my only negative comment is regarding pooing on the street.

Like I said, she is very old, and gets caught short a lot. She often does not make it in time in my own house (I get through a lot of Zoflora and kitchen roll). That is part of her being ancient. She asks to go out, but sometimes it just falls out her bum. It is an old dog thing. In the past 10 minutes, I have had to pick up a poo from the hallway.
The same applies out in the world too. I pick it up and move on.

OK. Sounds like you're doing your best by the old girl. I just want to clarify, again, that your posts did make me laugh but definitely not at you being autistic. Would you like me to remove the laugh responses?

It is ok, you clarified it. We are good 😊
I love my daft shitty girl.

I grew up with dogs. I don't understand when this trend started of letting dogs poo all over the pavement. It's revolting how the poo is walked through classrooms, through flats on wheelchair or pushchair wheels, through restaurants by the unwary... and yes the "residual" is still a massive problem. Your dog needs to learn to poo in the gutter, wee on the verge or in the gutter. And you pick up the poo from the gutter. It's basic puppy training FFS, go to get a trainer if you genuinely have no clue how to look after your pet.

If you live inner city, like I do, then there are no gutters because they are full with cars. And it is also dangerous to encourage your dog into the road. A small dog might be ok, but bigger dogs could end up being clipped by a car. Not a risk worth taking.

Yellowrosessmellpetaly · 09/02/2025 19:58

YABVVU. There is absolutely no justification for leaving dog faeces on any public path whatsoever.

If you're scared of the dark you don't take it out.

Fancy comparing wild animals mess with dog shit. Envy

Oh come on. There is ALWAYS space between parked cars. ALWAYS. You are just making daft excuses now. I hate seeing dogs crap, but it would at least be better on the road (not in traffic, obvs) as opposed to on the pavement where we mostly walk.

Can't believe you think living in a house with a dog shitting in your hall and dribbling shit here and there is an ok way to live. Utterly minging.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 09/02/2025 20:10

firstly you need an eye test if you can't see properly even with a torch.
then you need to see your GP re anxiety

if you are going to allow your dog to foul on the pavement at the very least you need to pick up every single bit - despite you not seeing well even with a torch
and carry at least one large bottle of hot water with washing up liquid in it and a bottle of water with disinfectant in it

One of my dogs had a poo accident on the road on our way home from the field, i picked it up, took dogs home, returned with a kettle full of boiling water and squirted my washing up liquid on the road then poured the kettle then I finished it off with disinfectant.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 09/02/2025 20:11

Or pay a dog walker to come in twice a day !

I can send my address if you like. Cars are bumper to bumper here. I can't remember what a gutter looks like because there is always a car on it.

Do you have kids? They also pee and poo indoors when you least expect it. And when people age, they do too. Look after someone with dementia. My best friend is caring for her mum, and her mum poos indoors on the floor more than my dog does!
I love my dog, and part of loving her is looking after her and cleaning up after her. You do not live with me, so you don't get to say how I live is "minging" or not. I am ok with it. I am the only person that has to be ok with it.. NOT you.

FastFood · 09/02/2025 20:15

Washing up liquid and what next? A.carpet cleaner? Do you guys usually lick the pavement or what?

I grew up in London and I live in London. There are cars everywhere. There is space between them all, or they would be gridlocked and unable to move, it's basic geometry. There is no clever "gotcha" for letting your dog's poo get all over schools and other people's homes, and every dog is as smart as a toddler to learn where they can or cannot poo. Teach your dog to use the gutter.

I am tempted to go outside and get a photo. There is no room between cars. Even I can't get out between them.
I don't live near a school, but I live in a house that is obviously in a street so I live near other people's houses.
I do clear up after my dog. That is the law.

This is so weird. Do you believe nobody else has seen a car in a city before? Space between cars needs to be about 1m to pull out, and is rarely less than 50cm. You are absolutely not walking up a whole road with no 30-40cm gap between any car for your dog to do a poo, so stop being so ridiculous.

I struggle to get between cars because I am rather large.
I can not train my dog to go in that same little gap. She is old, has dementia, and goes where and when she needs to. I pick it up. I do what is required of me by law. Anything else is your own made up rules. Send me a leaflet if you want me to follow them.

@YeOldeGreyhound It's pointless arguing with these pedantic posters that are almost asking dog owners to sew up our dogs arses so they don't shit.

To the pedantics... I'm guessing you don't give your partner fellatio, because he would surely have to pour boiling water on it, then bleach it in a gutter for fear you got some piss on your lips.

You are right.
It is also crude, but when people get the ick about others giving their dogs kisses... they do a lot worse with their partners. I can't get worked up about it (and I indulge in neither things).

Your dog did not start out old with dementia, the issue is that you never bothered to train it to poke its bum off the kerb, then collect, while nobody has to get the poo on their shoes nor wheels. And you still won't even think about why you should try. So unbelievably selfish.

Penises should not have poo on them, that would cause UTIs. Have you met a man before?
