To let dog poo in the street

AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street?

We live near a field and DH usually takes our dog over there. He's going away for a few days so I will solely be walking the dog. My problem is I get very very anxious in the dark, can't see properly even with the torch and it really stresses me out. Like heart/head pounding. Previously I have walked the dog around the estate we live on and he poos on the pavement. Some houses have no front garden and I always feel very guilty as it's so close to their homes. I ALWAYS pick up but you know sometimes it's not perfect. I'm aware of lots of doorbell cameras to. My dog refuses to poo in our garden. So AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street allowing me relax a little that I'm not offending anyone or do I need to wait until it's light. He is used to very early and late walks.

A Greyhound is tall enough to catch poos in a large bag before they hit the ground.

( Have done this in past)

My girl crouches down very low. She is small for a greyhound (24kg).
I pick her poo up though. No need for acrobatics to try and bag her poo as it falls out her bum (and she is a poo/pee walker - she does it on the move).

Still not other people's problem.

I pick up her poo. So it is not a problem as I do what is required of me as a responsible dog owner.
Bleaching the street, training my dog to poo only at home, using a dog nappy (I have in the past and she gets UTIs) are all made up rules that don't exist in reality.
The fact I don't follow your own made up rules is your problem, not mine.

Again, doing what's 'required' of you is also not being overly considerate of others.
Unfortunately I do have to wash the path beside my house with diluted bleach and it does stop inconsiderate people who think we want to see dogs pooing constantly. It's selfish and rude behaviour. Inconsiderate dog owners are everyone else's problem but theirs it seems.

Drylogsonly · 09/02/2025 17:17

Of course it’s fine, as long as it’s picked up!

Dogs don't poo constantly, and if you are seeing pooing dogs on a consistent basis then maybe you need a new hobby.
I follow the law. Your made up rules are in your head only. They are not in government literature, or anywhere official. Pretty crap to expect people to follow them, and then bitch on here to people that are also not following them.

As a good dog owner, I trained mine to use our toilet, however, sometimes nature calls when we are out and about. I never leave the house without a bucket of tarmac, shovel, spirit level, string line, rubber mallet, and wacker plate. so that after I pick up the offending object, I simply remove the existing path and lay a new one, thus removing any trace of fecal matter.

😂

😂

@CitizenZ needs to bring her stuff to my town and sort out the potholes! They are a bigger issue than tiny traces of dog poo on paths.

Same, too many pot holes and no one will fill them in.

Again, it's not made up rules, it's simple consideration.
As for dogs not pooing constantly, clearly, however one dog poo (even if picked up) or pee will attract others to said area.
Routinely letting an animal use the path outside people's houses is really inconsiderate and I struggle to understand how selfish someone would be to think otherwise.

It is made up rules. You are telling people (including me) to train my dog to only poo at home.
You have an issue with dogs, their owners, and dog poo. I mean, you even have an issue with people carrying poo in a bag on the street too. Because you don't like seeing poo in a bag, and somehow think it a hazard to shops and houses.

It's not 'made up rules', it's asking for consideration - do you always only ever go by rules, or are you also occasionally considerate of other people?
I am perfectly justified in not wanting other people's animals to repeatedly empty their bowels right outside my house, and it's shocking you think this is an unreasonable request.

oakleaffy · 09/02/2025 18:10

Zusammengebrochen · 09/02/2025 17:05

Indeed.

The catching of tall dog poos is so easy!
All one needs to do is to make a square opening the poo bag between thumb and index finger each side and the poo lands in the bag- zero need to even feel the poo through the bag that way-

My Whippet is too small to do this ( not enough clearance) between bottom and ground but she poos in my garden mainly.

Just thisevening saw a bloke try to ignore his dog’s poo
I asked if he wanted a poo bag- while handing him one- He wasn’t keen.

People shouldn’t have dogs unless they are able and willing to clean up the mess- and far too many dogs have shocking digestion judging by the sloppy poo marks left on pavements.

Poo in gutter then bag it.
Not pavements!

Likewhatever · 09/02/2025 15:31

Do what people are required by law to do in Spain, carry a bottle of soapy water or water vinegar mix and wash any area where your dog has fouled. Take home the bagged poo, leave no trace.

See I actually think this is a really good idea! As a dog owner I would have no issue doing this.

My dog poos, I pick it up. I do my bit.
I go by rules. I am autistic, so rules govern my life. So I don't understand when someone makes up their own and expects me to follow them.

I have taken a bottle of water when my dog has had sloppy poos. I do the same in my garden. I use the hose pipe to wash the sloppy ones away.
But bleach and anti-bac wipes is just silly. It is the pavement, not an operating theatre.

I've not made up rules.
I've asked you to be considerate of other people.
We're going round in circles though so let's tie it up in a metaphorical poo bag, wash down the pavement and move on.

It’s not unreasonable to let your dog poo in the street. It is unreasonable to leave it “not perfect”.

Fantastic! I need a bigger dog walking bag! 🤣

The bleach isn't to make it clean and sparkling, it's an attempt to remove the scent which attracts other dogs to poo there. 😆

I’m a dog owner and 100 percent agree with you.

People who can’t be bothered to train a dog to go on command ( not difficult) or train them to use a gutter and then bag it are what gives dog owners a bad name.

If one hasn’t got a garden or small yard, I don’t think it’s fair to keep a dog.

When a human is too Ill to walk a dog ( Norovirus or flu ) it’s easy to let them out into the secure garden to relieve themselves.

Many rescues insist on a small secure garden for this reason.

I live in a town centre where there no gutters for my dog to pee/poo in, as they are filled with cars.
And making your dog go into the road is dangerous.
I have a garden, but I can't stop my dog going outside my residence. If she needs to go, she needs to go. She is very old and has dementia.

There is nothing anywhere in Gov literature about making your dog only toilet at home. So I have issue with being told I am a "bad owner" for literally following the rules. I am not following your made up rules.

oakleaffy · 09/02/2025 18:21

White vinegar also really helps - and an enzyme based washing powder solution like Bio Tex on a hard surface was recommended years ago by Rodger Mugford , animal behaviourist to the Queen. ( urine destroyer solution for clean ups is now available- but can’t remember name of it - sold in many pet shops and online.)

Bleach doesn't. You need specific enzymes for that.

So use the bag under bottom to catch the poo.

Dogs don’t just randomly poo without warning ( friends own 16 yr old sight hounds)
They get into position then poo.
