To let dog poo in the street

AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street?

We live near a field and DH usually takes our dog over there. He's going away for a few days so I will solely be walking the dog. My problem is I get very very anxious in the dark, can't see properly even with the torch and it really stresses me out. Like heart/head pounding. Previously I have walked the dog around the estate we live on and he poos on the pavement. Some houses have no front garden and I always feel very guilty as it's so close to their homes. I ALWAYS pick up but you know sometimes it's not perfect. I'm aware of lots of doorbell cameras to. My dog refuses to poo in our garden. So AIBU to allow my dog to poo in the street allowing me relax a little that I'm not offending anyone or do I need to wait until it's light. He is used to very early and late walks.

Threads about dogs always bring out the loony posts on MN. 😅 It's quite entertaining.

@zeroheroxdon't worry at all, what you're doing is fine. As PPs have said, bring a bottle of water to clean any residue and possibly look at your dog's diet. But don't doubt yourself due to the few frankly insane posts on this thread.

It's not insane to not want your street to become a dog toileting location - even picking it up leaves a scent, especially if they pee too, and it does attract other dogs.

Crumpleton · 09/02/2025 15:58

I expect many dog owners/walkers just take their dog for a stroll around their neighbourhood for the last walk of an evening for it to do their business.

Just take poo bags and continue to pick up.

There's perhaps some genuine exceptions @YeOldeGreyhound, but there really are a lot of disgusting dog owners who think it's fine to let their dogs poo anywhere. Even when they pick it up they walk along, past shops, cafes, houses, swinging a big lump of poo in a bag. It's horrible.

If the poo is in a bag, then it is causing no harm. You don't need to look at it. I see other people walk their dogs, and I take no notice of them carrying a bag of poo. I have to carry mine until I get to a bin.

This is exactly what us non-dog people are objecting to - we DON'T want piss- and shit- filled pavements; if your dog needs an evacuation of it's bowels and bladder before bedtime, train it to do it in your garden, Then you (and your poor neighbours, if the stench builds up) are the ones affected, NOT the rest of us who are sick of traipsing in pissy, pooey streets, walking it into our homes, having to scrape it off our shoes. SURELY you can see it is a huge problem. Asking dog owners to pick up does not work in too many cases, therefore, we need an alternative - we need to stop saying it's acceptable to have them do their business in public, and this will lead to less shit and pee on the pavements. There is absolutely no reason you can't train a dog to use their own garden. Make it stay there until it does. No walkies until it has shat and pissed in your garden. Then take it for a walk.

We have a clean up kit in the dog walking bag - sports bottle with the nozzle so you can squirt - wet wipes/kitchen roll - poop freeze spray in case someone has an unexpected runny/soft one.

https://amzn.eu/d/hJhUXmL This stuff, its excellent, turns soft poo solid in seconds so you can pick it up and then only need a little water to remove any residue (rarely is any!).

As this thread will indicate, yes there are some people who will deem you unreasonable for taking your dog for a walk and allowing them to shit on the pavement even if you polish the pavement afterwards and restore it to 'as new' condition. But don't worry about them, the law says you can absolutely let your dog shit on the pavement as long as you clean it up.

Dog owners are not immune to walking in dog poo either.
It baffles me when someone leaves dog poo on a pavement, as surely their dog would be on a lead, and stop to poo. I do think people leave it on pavements out of laziness.
Although I nearly had to leave one once as I had ran out of bags, Thankfully, another dog walker was coming towards me so I asked for a bag.

But anyway, as long as people pick up after their dog, it is fine. Your made up MN rule is only existing in your head. Just like when people say people should not take their dogs into dog friendly cafes.

It's not 'just fine'. The scent is left even if you clean it. Why should your dog use the path beside my house as a toilet instead of your own garden?

DemonicCaveMaggot · 09/02/2025 16:34

Where I live there is so much dog poop on the pavements that everyone would be grateful that you made any attempt to pick up your dog's poop.

I don't know you or where you live, so not sure why you think my dog would be doing her business outside your house.
Are you getting on your hands and knees, and sniffing the pavement? A firm dog poo wont leave anything. Bacteria, yes but that is over the top to be concerned about outside.
The only way my dog wont go out in public is if I never take her out. Which would be cruel. She does her business in my garden, but if she needs to go when we are out, then she needs to go. That would be like saying you can only pee/poo in your own house. You are not allowed to use public loos.

I wasn't referring literally to you and me, clearly, but more those who think the path is more acceptable than their garden. We've already discussed your particular situation, no need to go over that again.
Comparing pooing or peeing on the pavement with using a public toilet is a bit wild too. 😵‍💫

TBF half of MN probably wouldn’t use public loos!

Not wild. Why use a public toilet? Train yourself to only use the facilities at home. If you say that is difficult, then how is it easy for a dog?

You don't see how a public toilet, a receptacle designed to collect waste, is different from peeing and pooing in residential locations?

CitizenZ · 09/02/2025 16:46

As a good dog owner, I trained mine to use our toilet, however, sometimes nature calls when we are out and about. I never leave the house without a bucket of tarmac, shovel, spirit level, string line, rubber mallet, and wacker plate. so that after I pick up the offending object, I simply remove the existing path and lay a new one, thus removing any trace of fecal matter.

Excellent.
Fancy moving to a remote location near me?
Your road fixing skills would be highly in demand.

Dogs are allowed to pee and poo outdoors though (as long as owner picks up poo).
You are trying to apply your own logic and personal rules to the rest of us.
I pick up my dog's poo. I do what is required of me.

I've not said people aren't doing what is required of them, I've simply suggested that people's own gardens are generally better and much more considerate toilet facilities for their dogs than streets beside random houses or businesses are. This isn't rocket science.

But I can't tell my dog to hold it in until we get home. If she needs to go, she needs to go.

LostInAMist · 08/02/2025 19:34

I mean, it should be picked up in the field too, if it's grazed/used for hay/kids playing field, so it's a non issue. You can't always help when a dog decides to go, but it should always be picked up regardless! If it's "not perfect", like others have said, bottle of water to wash it off or maybe improve dog's diet to make it more pick up able

Diet makes a massive difference to poos.

A high quality ( usually expensive) diet leaves smaller denser poos that leave no visible trace.

Cheap food gives bulky slushier poos.

There used to be a ghastly food years ago called Pascoes that gave foul bulky poos seen everywhere.
Cereal based.
Yuck.

That means not walking her at all, as I live in a town centre and it is literally houses and shops the second I leave my front garden.

A Greyhound is tall enough to catch poos in a large bag before they hit the ground.

You not considering this when getting a pet isn't other people's problem though, to be completely blunt. Do you not have a garden?
