To wonder what would happen if LL were ever released?

I'm not intending to state whether I think she is innocent or guilty but I am just curious as to how her life would look if she were released.
Even if her conviction was overturned, it's highly unlikely she'd be able to go back to a regular life, or would she? Would she walk away with no convictions?

Seriously if her case was overturned she would be released and eventually compensated and she would have to get on with her life. Just as has happened with every other miscarriage of justice. She is certainly not the first person who has been wrongly convicted.
Any person who harassed or stalked or threatened her would be arrested and charged. She's not a witness or a released convicted person or a child so she wouldn't be relocated or have her identity changed. She would be an innocent person and if it was me I'd be very keen to talk about the injustice of it to anyone who would listen.

I don't think she'd get compensation even if later found not guilty. Unless maybe the NHS was subsequently found guilty of something like corporate manslaughter.

If she was acquitted she would get compensation.

Huge payout, relocation, new id.

She’d be found, they always are.

This. Karen Matthew’s is moved a few times a year. They’d have to move her out of the UK for her to have any semblance of a “normal” life

Which, if she IS innocent, is totally unfair as her life will never be the same again.

Who is L L - am not in UK

Lucy Letby - a nurse convicted of murdering several babies in her care.

Lucy Letby - a nurse convicted of murdering several babies in her care.

Seven babies she’s accused of murdering, and six attempted murders. I think there were others that the jury couldn’t reach a verdict on.

I am still perplexed that the only witness to the defence was the hospital plumber.

I believe she’s guilty.

It’s funny how people always bring Maxine Carr up. She’s local to me and everyone knows it’s her. Not “is just guessing” - it is actually her. They get a change of identity not a new face !

Can I ask a question? Obviously not revealing specific details but is she just treated like a local and are people friendly to her?

MrGoldfarts · 06/02/2025 20:51

I imagine she would be given a new name and national insurance and most likely advised to move elsewhere. The threat of vigilantism would be a concern I guess. A lot might depend on whether she is acquitted due to lack of strong conviction or whether it turns out someone else did it and she is exonerated entirely . Though even with the latter would there still be some who would insist she should have stayed in prison? I imagine she would want to start afresh in any case. Too many horrible memories being Lucy Letby and living in Cheshire area.

Really?!

Cheesandcrackers · 06/02/2025 20:59

Even is LL is not totally guilty I doubt she can be proven totally innocent. However she won't lack book deals and Netflix offers so she'll be fine. And some dumbass guy will end up with her so she'll be fine there too.

Pleasehelp12345 · 06/02/2025 21:02

I think Maxinr Carr should be left alone now. She acted in a very foolish manner but apparently had no idea that Ian Huntley was responsible for the murders, she's done her time and should be able to get on with her life.

I presume she'd need a complete change of identity and a massive compensation package

There will always be those who believe she was guilty no matter what and she would be hounded by them, or worse.

If she is innocent her life is ruined anyway

Why should she change her identity if found not guilty? She would have the right to live as herself.

I don’t think it’s a case of whether “someone else did it”. It whether “it” (murder) was done at all, or whether the babies died due to natural causes (as per the original coroners reports) or whether a poorly run unit was a contributing factor. The podcast series Lucy Letby: Was there ever a crime? is worth a listen.

This

Dontlletmedownbruce · 06/02/2025 21:10

Is a person who is the victim of a miscarriage of justice entitled to a witness protection type of new identity? If so she would have to make the choice between disappearing and making a lot of money from interviews and book deals etc. It's an awful and difficult position to be in if she is truly innocent. I can't even imagine the mental torment.

Tell that to the murdered children’s families

Loopylooni · 06/02/2025 21:16

@Pleasehelp12345 I thought Maxine Carr knew and just covered it all up.

I do agree there. Would we want someone babysitting our kids who has been in the frame for murder?

That is a more likely, alternative, I agree.

I think she would.

She's known now (inter)nationally and judgements have already been formed.

She'll probably never be able to work again because of the stigma and her mental health will be in tatters.

The miscarriage of justice would affect her life more than several lifetimes of prison sentences ever would.

OwlInTheOak · 06/02/2025 21:40

I would imagine she would need a new identity and likely to move abroad (eg Australia) to live any form of slightly normal life if she's innocent. Though even then I'd imagine she'd spend the rest of her life on edge.
If she's innocent then as well as being horrific for her it's added unimaginable trauma to the parents. Whilst obviously the pain of loss is hard enough, I would imagine thinking its murder compared to negligence would add an entire extra level of devastation and trauma.
And it's not something there will ever be a 100% answer on, so that trauma isn't fixable even if she is deemed innocent.

Luddite26 · 06/02/2025 21:43

Is negligence as bad as murder. I would imagine the sense of loss being the same but no one particular to direct your anger at or no one taking the blame.
And negligence has been rife in recent years.

The issue though is 'who was negligent'

Some poor sap may well end up as the fall guy as it went wrong on their watch BUT those over them knew what was happening and took no action.

Think Herald of Free Enterprise

RosesAndHellebores · 06/02/2025 21:47

I hope she would be OK. I also hope it might herald an end to toxic and hierarchical NHS cultures where standards are terrifically poor and senior people look for a scapegoat.

If she didn't do it I hope it is proven and a statue of her goes up in the foyer of every hospital as a reminder of what toxic cultures bring.
