It's like a parallel universe - how did America come to this? So now he plans to ethnically cleanse Gaza we are told - to create the 'Riviera of the Middle East.' A golf course and hotels probably. The £2 million people can just go wherever. Wtf! AIBU to think America is imploding in on itself?

Does it? Women don’t have the right to basic reproductive rights in many states - men are deciding that. In fact women’s rights are threatened in every arena
You can’t go anywhere or do anything without ID. It amazed me the first time I went - the constant demand for ID
healthcare - under the control of your employer at lot of the time, basic healthcare depends on the $$ you have so you have no freedom there,
lack of social mobility - the myth of work hard become rich is gone for anyone not already wealthy.
work -you’re free to work like a dog someone else can get rich.
The US lock up more of its citizens than any other country. Sometimes for minor things, and again the poor non-whites bear the brunt.
There is no separation of state and church - despite there supposing to be - ‘god’ is everywhere in politics, dictating the rights of everyone…

’freedom’ is a myth. Vance basically had a pop at Europeans because we have more freedom - like the right to reproductive care.
Jnder his eyeFreedom in the US is for rich white men.

And ….. the NHS doesn’t ask you to confirm who you are at hospital or GP?

If you are not “in the NHS system” in UK, you get billed now and surprise, they want some ID. So, you need to revise your rhetoric

The people I know there are doing their best to leave right now.

it’s not ‘freedom’ they’re after.

I think 'half truths' is being unnecessarily kind to him

I’d love to call him an out and out lying- whatever- but Some one will come along and go - no, those 3 words he used in the entire speech actually happened so … fake news! Liberals! Woke! Agenda blah blah blah

oooh can you recommend a ghost story I can listen to please?

There's a YouTube called Classic Ghost Stories. Actually there's a couple. Old detective Stories too. Trick is to avoid the AI ones these days. Check the comments first - some listener usually flags them up

Cantonet · 15/02/2025 20:44

I think America is trying to impress Putin. The Russians were very happy with Vance's speech criticising the Europeans for a lack of democracy.
The Pot calling the kettle black methinks.

Everything I have heard says USA thinks China is a bigger threat than Russia and they can't afford to plough money into Ukraine and Israel fighting the wars for them.
They need to concentrate on their own military and reserves esp re China

And put money into their own infrastructure and population.
The Ukrain war is in deadlock and the eu seem to have done absolutely nothing in ploughing funds into their own protection. It beggars belief really!
It's a huge massive block why hasn't it made it's own security a priority?
Whether Trump does or doesn't give them support shouldn't really be an issue it should be a bonus.
Putin thought he could take Ukraine in days, 3 years later the war is still going.
Why on earth would he want to tackle anywhere else when he can't take Ukraine.

No solution here is ideal but at least Ukraine would be safe and whoever does the peace keeping border means putin wouldn't ever attack again.
People in Ukraine could live again at the moment they don't know if the entirety of their country will be taken by putin. What then?

@TankflyBossW4lk that is also true of many/most countries. The social support system in the US may not look like much to those of us in other western countries but just compare it to that available across other swathes of the globe.

I'm not arguing that things in the US are great, I'm arguing that saying the US is one of the "least free" countries in the world is ridiculous.

Americas current government threaten the media if they push back, oppose, or disagree with them. They will sue them and or shut them down. ( Associated Press, Jim Acosta, ) The richest man in the world runs a social media organisation that is biased to one viewpoint, and while spouting about free speech deletes accounts that have a different viewpoint. Then there is another billionaire run social media who was told to toe the line and remove fact checking or they would see the wrath of the government. They witter on about the first amendment (free speech) and yet this is anything but free. All this has happened in the last number of months. To me this is like beginning to look like living in North Korea or Nazi Germany.

America is not free.

Why would Elon do stuff for money and corruption I don't feel getting more money is his driver, power probably but not more money

Trump, not sure I don't believe he actually has much!
People critique wealthy people in politics but I'm not sure we are safer from those who didn't grow up in a monied background.
Look at our collection now taking freebies from lord Ali and clothes, boxes etc.
And the rest

Unfortunately a different type of repression had taken place before with people frightened of calling out gender policies so now there is a huge swing back the other way.

It will take decades to get some proper balance there.

People forget America is a very young country still and it's v
Very backward in many ways.

Money IS power.....musk is a megalomaniac...money has bought him the American presidency, can't get much more power than that ! Trump is effectively musks puppet, all he had to do was show trump the money.Trump would roll onto his back and wiggle his legs in the air for money so that wasn't difficult. Musk wants to go to Mars doesn't want to spend his own money when he can get billions from US contracts to do it.

Russia is on its knees financially and militarily and yet trump is conceding to all putins demands. But then trump is a hard negotiator 😱.....it would be hysterically funny if it wasn't so serious.

Okay. I'll bite.

Enough with the orange insults

Enough with the exaggerations, like claiming he's going to build a golf course that covers half the world or some such ridiculousness.

Enough with the catastrophising.

The majority on this thread, and others like it, don't seem to realise their own extreme rhetoric has pushed an awful lot of Americans to vote for him.

Screaming, crying, shouting, throwing insults and making stuff up are not going to convince many to vote for those aligned with your viewpoint.

Sorry but we live in Canada and will continue to protect ourselves against the felon acting as president south of our border. We’re now referring to the US as a Southern Canadian province! We’ll never become a US state! (And we’ll be booing the American national anthem at the 4Nations!)

Turkeyneck101 · 16/02/2025 06:33

Extreme rhetoric = taking back Greenland, buying Canada, building hotels in gaza, etc etc etc .....and mumsnet is the problem?

Telling a load of probably predominately brits, to not have a differing opinion , and not to express it ....wow.

From my own perspective making stuff up about trump isn't necessary it's all out there.....unless fox edits out the bad bits. ;-)

Parker231 · 16/02/2025 07:16

It's the Gulf of Mexico.
Canada is not a US state.
Gaza is not a real estate trade.
Greenland is not for sale.

The world is not American.

Chickensilkie · 16/02/2025 07:25

@Turkeyneck101 well zekensky said oil prices mean putin can well afford to keep things going and he can draw on soldiers from other nations.

I don't think it's giving into putin at akk6, putin wanted Kiev and another Russian puppet government there.
Won't happen.
And once it's stopped completely the moment they agree to concede both of them, Ukraine can be properly armed.
It can get fighter jets in and propery arm the border.

Russia is winning this war and Ukraine can't win it

I’m waiting for him to suggest that the population of England should be relocated to the Australian outback so that he can turn It into a giant golf course.

Yes please! It's been dull, dark, wet and freezing cold for weeks now. The outback would suit me fine. I'm sure he would build a collection of Trump towers for us to live in.

Sorry mate, the rest of the world isn’t going to sit by while your orange-faced baboon with his baby faced bearded deputy and their botoxed to fuck megalomaniac mate plot to invade other countries, disestablish the world, and bring some Handmaiden Tale shit to us all just so the richest county in the world can make more money.
We aren’t a revenue stream for the US - so go ahead and take back aid from people who really need it, fire all your sane government employees or at least the ones who won’t fall in line with the new world order, free the criminals who tried to overthrow your elected government… just leave the rest of us out of it.
Oh, and tell tangerine man that we don’t take your over sized, fuel guzzling, shitty cars because they’re too big, too expensive, fuel guzzling and shit. It’s not a mystery.

However, now Europe has been scared into upping defence spending, UK and Europe will be in the market for some big shiny bangy new weapons. Expensively made and traded by US of A. And as we demand lots more of it, Bigly will impose his new tariffs on the imports. Think like a Donald.

I may be understanding this wrong, but aren't tariffs on goods coming into America, not going out of it?

Serpentstooth · 16/02/2025 09:42

US will pay tariffs on imports. Bigly intends this to decrease imports so US buys American. Other countries will either not buy from US or, if they need to buy US product, will pay the increased prices of US goods caused by the imposition of the import tariffs. Either way, its going to cost.

Brainwashed, blind or deliberately obtuse. Trying to work out which.

"The majority on this thread, and others like it, don't seem to realise their own extreme rhetoric has pushed an awful lot of Americans to vote for him."

The cause of Trump's victory was the propaganda propagated by the right wing - the dodgy conspiracy theories on X, the right wing media (Fox news et al), racist rhetoric, 4 Chan, Q Anon, Facebook algorithms pushing pure lies... and all the rest. It's called brainwashing.

Don't try to blame it on people pushing back against it and calling it out for what it is.

Notaflippinclue · 16/02/2025 12:12

I agree with Sparklingems let USA sort themselves out - if you are a lefty it's shit if you are right wing yahoo. If some of the free speech border vetting and trans nonsense stuff wafts over hear i will be grateful
