Natural deodorants - nice idea but just don't cut it?

I'm trying to reduce the amount of chemicals I use and decided to try an aluminium free deodorant (Biosen) and currently trying Wild - but the Biosen just doesn't work that well and I smell sweaty after a while and the Wild... well dear lord it certainly does smell wild after a few hours. I wouldn't even describe it as a sweat smell, just horrendous.

Has anyone tried Fussy? It's next on my list but wary of wasting my money!

Wild works well for me, as does natural deodorant co. AKT didn't though, no Neal's yard.

You have a long period of adjustment when you first start using them, I think that's your body adjusting rather than the deodorant's fault though.

houwseevryweekend · 06/02/2025 06:39

I stopped using anti perspirant as hated the underarm stains ruining my tops (Mitchum was the worst offender) and felt I sweat more using them and smelt worse. Pitrok has been great for me. I did a 70k bike ride using it in blazing sun and didn't stink. I don't mind wet pits as long as I don't stink. Bionsen isn't as long lasting but does the job if I'm not rushing about. No more stains and sweat a lot less.

Wild does specifically say that you need to give it 5+ weeks for your body to adapt to not using an antiperspirant. I would say this is pretty accurate!

I get this, but what are you going to do, sit at home for five weeks? I smelled horrendous when I tried the Wild deodorant. It was honestly awful, almost worse than if I'd used no deodorant at all as it was BO mixed with a sickly sweet smell.

I love the concept, but I can't go around smelling for five weeks.

I really really like fussy and it lasts for months.

I am not a particularly sweaty person though

Offcom · 06/02/2025 07:02

Zinc oxide is the magic ingredient for me when it comes to deodorant that actually deodorises – I see it’s what is in Nuud, which I haven’t tried yet, but there’s a brand called Trust which works, and another called Lavilin which does a roll on I really rate.

Modern Botany is back in business – that’s the best of the herbal type deos I’ve used. But it’s not cheap (nor is Lavilin).

curious79 · 06/02/2025 07:06

I use fussy - think it’s brilliant. No marks on clothes either
If I’m very active I’ll end up needing a shower, but end of day type thing. That would be the same with any deo though
what you eat influences your smell. I cut down on meat / dairy and found myself smelling so much less

Sinkintotheswamp · 06/02/2025 07:13

I like Salt Of The Earth spray. I've never tested it on a work day though, only on non working days for the gym. Might give it a go in the office today.

Love Fussy

Toomanyusernamestochoose · 06/02/2025 07:26

The Natural Deodorant Company was my favourite but only effective in cooler months. I stopped using antiperspirants for approx 2 years (for skin condition) so gave the natural alternatives a really good chance and through all seasons. They would be fine in the winter but fall apart in summer or when exercising.

Ive done back to stick anti perspirants for majority of the time and my skin tolerates them much better than the sprays I used to buy plus I can rely on the fact I’m not about to start to smell unless doing really intense exercise

The cost difference is also crazy so I have no inclination to go back when it’s so expensive

I’ve been a fan of pitrok for years: it works better the more you use it.
I think Nuud has been banned in France because it was causing armpit cysts, seems like even going natural has pitfalls (pun not intended!)

That's why nuud reformulated their product. As far as I know, it's no longer an issue.

I've used Fussy since lockdown, they work well for me. Wide range of scents online and a limited range now available in Sainsbury's (not sure about other supermarkets).

Tesco sell Fussy, although limited range like Sainsbury’s.

Vanillabourbon · 06/02/2025 16:24

I have used fussy for about 18 months now. It's the only natural deodorant that works really well for me (I've tried a few including Wild).
Lots of nice scents and it goes on really well.
I got it for my daughter (11) & it works really well for her too.
I wouldn't use anything else now

chargeitup · 06/02/2025 16:32

I do find different brands more or less effective. They seem to mostly have the same General ingredients but they seem to work with varying success and it seems different people get on with different brands.

I find Native from the US the best. They don't ship here so I have to get it via a forwarding company which is very extra for deodorant but it the best one for me. So I bulk buy!

rosyvalentine · 06/02/2025 17:04

I switched from Sure to Vico natural deodorant and I find it works really well. It's a relatively new brand so not too widely available yet but you can buy it direct from their own website. Comes in a range of great scents but the Lemongrass is my favourite. Doesn't leave your armpits all sticky in the shower either like the traditional ones. I highly recommend it.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 06/02/2025 17:18

Another Pitrok here. Works for me.

ImWearingPantaloons · 06/02/2025 18:54

Forgot to mention FitPit in the little glass jar. It's a paste and you scoop out a pea size amount and rub it in.

I also think natural deodorants work better on shaved armpits too.

Oblomov25 · 06/02/2025 19:01

I'd like to, but find them all poor.

LittleEsme · 07/02/2025 04:53

Try ProCoal - amazing stuff

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 07/02/2025 05:06

All wild did was make my pits bright red. Still Mitchum in our house.

malificent7 · 07/02/2025 05:55

Get yourself a rock salt one. Effective and last for ages. They don't cost much either.

LittleBitAlexa · 07/02/2025 15:29

I've tried Fussy and Wild and prefer Fussy. I love the smell of it. I find the lid annoying as I can't tell which end is which. I found Wild messy and sticky. Mind you I haven't experienced any hot weather yet so we'll see.

Wafflesandcrepes · 27/04/2025 00:00

I had been looking for a natural deodorant for years and was about to go back to my nasty, commercial
ones as I was always stinking (tmi, sorry.) And then I found the Natural Deodorant Company and it has been a total game changer. 100% protection for 24 hours. Zero odour (for first time ever). Lovely scent. No itchiness. I didn’t think this was possible.

Reliablesource · 27/04/2025 00:23

Fountofwisdom · 05/02/2025 15:23

i just bought a sample set of Fussy. Sorry to say, I’m not very impressed. I don’t feel like it covers very well (the stick feels hard and doesn’t really glide on like others.) And the scents are very faint and soon disappear. Which all leaves me feeling like it’s not very effective and I’ve ended up reapplying a different deodorant a few hours later!

Came here to say exactly the same. Bought the sample set - felt very hard and didn’t feel I was getting much coverage. Very faint scent that had disappeared within minutes of applying. Didn’t feel confident with Fussy at all.

The fact that the sample sizes come in a flimsy cardboard dispenser didn’t help, I found it very fiddly to push the stick up and to get the lids back on. But regardless, wasn’t impressed and won’t be buying Fussy again.

Get yourself a rock salt one. Effective and last for ages. They don't cost much either.

Weirdly the rock salt things make me smell more. And the thing itself smells like BO after I’ve used it.

unsync · 27/04/2025 07:05

You have to give Wild time to work. Once you've done that it's good. Thunderstorm works well for my menopausal pits. I gym x6 every werk with no issues. Also, use a proper bar soap (not dove) to wash. I like lemon verbena.
