Natural deodorants - nice idea but just don't cut it?

I'm trying to reduce the amount of chemicals I use and decided to try an aluminium free deodorant (Biosen) and currently trying Wild - but the Biosen just doesn't work that well and I smell sweaty after a while and the Wild... well dear lord it certainly does smell wild after a few hours. I wouldn't even describe it as a sweat smell, just horrendous.

Has anyone tried Fussy? It's next on my list but wary of wasting my money!

I gave up, although now using a midway one called making waves....not completely eco but definitely works compared to the others

ImWearingPantaloons · 05/02/2025 14:59

I use a Pitrok roll on - no anti perspirant in it but I don't get sweaty or smelly using it.

AwardGiselePelicotTheNobelPeacePrize · 05/02/2025 15:05

Yep pitrok works best for menopausal old me, much better than roll ons. Wild does ok too.

nonevernotever · 05/02/2025 15:08

I tried loads, and actually Wild is the only one that works for me. I think it really varies though because I have some friends that also swear by Wild, and others that loathe it but swear by ones I'd tried and hated. I particularly disliked The natural deodorant company ones. I see lots of good reviews for Megababe rosy pits too, and am tempted to try that.

CrunchySnow · 05/02/2025 15:10

Pitrok is the only one that's ever used for me. I still get a little sweaty with it but not stinky.

Oldglasses · 05/02/2025 15:11

Funny you should write this, as my DD bought me Wild for Xmas as she uses it. However, I am a post-meno woman, not a fresh-faced 20-something! It's Ok during the day but I wake up whiffy and really have to scrub the pits in the shower to get the BO smell out.

Plaitedplait · 05/02/2025 15:11

I'd assumed when people said deodorant they were meaning antiperspirant but it seems they are just deodorants? That won't help any more than Impulse body spray would have in the 90s. I'm not really surprised people are finding them ineffective as I would imagine most people do need an antiperspirant.

Never worked for me

I love fussy! Personally didn’t find wild did anything at all.
Tried fussy post partum as I didn’t want to be spraying my normal anti perspirant when breastfeeding a newborn.
It is a deodorant rather than anti perspirant so doesn’t stop sweat but stops any smell. I just wear and wash clothes according to what I’m doing.
I don’t agree that a deodorant is like a body spray at all - deodorant prevents the bacteria in sweat multiplying and creating the BO smell, not just masks it.

gettinghealthy · 05/02/2025 15:19

Wild does specifically say that you need to give it 5+ weeks for your body to adapt to not using an antiperspirant. I would say this is pretty accurate!

LarryUnderwood · 05/02/2025 15:20

I switched to using the Ordinary glycolic acid about 5 months ago. Little splash in my palms, rub on pits after a shower and it kills the bacteria that cause BO. It's so effective and doesn't stain armpits of clothes. It's not an antiperspirant but I've found that after a few weeks of not using antiperspirant I sweat a bit less anyway. As if my sweat glands were working overtime before to combat my Sure!

Ohplesandbanonos · 05/02/2025 15:21

I use wild and it works for me - better than traditional ones. I've also switched to washing with bar soap which has made a huge difference.

Fountofwisdom · 05/02/2025 15:23

i just bought a sample set of Fussy. Sorry to say, I’m not very impressed. I don’t feel like it covers very well (the stick feels hard and doesn’t really glide on like others.) And the scents are very faint and soon disappear. Which all leaves me feeling like it’s not very effective and I’ve ended up reapplying a different deodorant a few hours later!

tilypu · 05/02/2025 15:23

I use nuud and love it
A tiny tube lasts me about four or five months, as (now that I've used it for a while) I only need to apply it once a week.

Neal's Yard deodorants are not worth using imo. I haven't tried wild or fussy. I used to use bionsen, and got on fine with it, but nuud is better.

astridforty · 05/02/2025 15:24

I like Fussy, the only (manageable) downside is that it leaves waxy marks on the inside of clothes and my bra which needs to be washed on a decent cycle to remove. I like the product though and range of scents is good.

nutbrownhare15 · 05/02/2025 15:24

I use one from Bloomtown. It works really well and smells great.

TwentyKittens · 05/02/2025 15:25

I use a crystal deodorant. Each on least a few years. Boring but effective.

KimFan · 05/02/2025 15:25

Sadly I don't find natural deodorants any good whatsoever. Lovely idea, but it's good old Mitchum for me!

Marinel · 05/02/2025 15:25

I tried Wild but didn't like it.

I have used Pitrok for years though and that works fine for me.

Mysteryfemale · 05/02/2025 15:26

Another Fussy fan here.

ShowAndGo · 05/02/2025 15:27

I so wanted to like AKT... I even feel slightly worse about myself than before, to think I'm sweatier and stinkier than actual West End dancers apparently.

Fawn87 · 05/02/2025 15:29

I don't think they work. I'm not a very sweaty person and normally one spray of antiperspirant sorts keeps me covered all day, but I tried a natural one and within an hour I smelt faintly of body odour and was sticky.

reesiespieces · 05/02/2025 15:33

Deodorant is fundamentally a perfume. If you aren't a stinky person they'll work. If you are, they won't.

I've tried numerous and they do absolutely nothing for me. Antiperspirant for the win!

Same. I want to feel dry, and none of the natural deodorants help with that.

Idunno8 · 05/02/2025 15:41

I’ve tried SO many non organic deodorant's/ anti perspirants etc and the only thing thats really worked for me, not to be smelly AT ALL, was Fussy. I gave it ago as it has a bacteria in it that basically eats the stuff that smells in sweat, its a bloody god send, can’r recommend it enough. I haven’t tried any other natural deoderants to be fair, I was using triple dry before which worked pretty well, but you just know its not good for you, (common sense wise,) just clogging up your glands, so im happy I found a genuine alternative.
