Natural deodorants - nice idea but just don't cut it?

I'm trying to reduce the amount of chemicals I use and decided to try an aluminium free deodorant (Biosen) and currently trying Wild - but the Biosen just doesn't work that well and I smell sweaty after a while and the Wild... well dear lord it certainly does smell wild after a few hours. I wouldn't even describe it as a sweat smell, just horrendous.

Has anyone tried Fussy? It's next on my list but wary of wasting my money!

I use Akt which is outrageously expensive but which works better on me than Dove anti-perspirant which is what I used before.

Ineffable23 · 05/02/2025 18:38

I use life supplies. Annoyingly expensive but they all are really. It's actually an antiperspirant and works just like a normal shop one. I use the eucalyptus but they have an orange scent which I like the sound of too.

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 05/02/2025 18:41

Mitchum used to be the only deodorant that worked for me.

Now I use Wild deodorant - it works well for me (usually the sea breeze one, I think). But I think that washing with traditional bar soap helps, as does wearing natural fabrics. Plus I rub on quite a lot of the deodorant.

Hankunamatata · 05/02/2025 18:42

Adore wild but took about a month to detox my pits from sure and for it to work. Doesn't work for everyone though

Mainoo72 · 05/02/2025 18:49

I’m using the Mitchum Natural Power Coconut which I really like.

LoveMeBack · 05/02/2025 18:54

I've tried natural deodorants, like wild, AKT and salt - no good. I picked up one called humble in TK Maxx which was ok, but hard to get hold of.

I've also tried make waves anti perspirent. Maybe I sweat a little less with that one, but I smell by the end of the day (Manual job, HCP). I've given up and gone back to mens mitchum stick

APurpleSquirrel · 05/02/2025 18:59

My DH is a convert to Fussy & it works for him.
I decided to try it last autumn & gave it till beginning of year & it just didn't work for me at all! I smelt awful at the end of each day & it made the underarms of my clothes a dark colour (not moisture).
So I'm back to using Dove.

dementedpixie · 05/02/2025 17:30

@Onyuk100 how do you find making waves? They do an antiperspirant as well as a deodorant. Which do you use?

I use the antiperspirant. Which isn't strictly no chemicals but I suppose less than normal amounts

Aliceglass · 05/02/2025 19:02

I use fussy and I think it’s better than wild. I really prefer natural deodorants and won’t go back to using antiperspirants ever!

I think I'll try this. I tried some natural deodorants years ago but wasn't impressed with them. I like a lot of The Ordinary products.

It's a total game changer. I switched my teenage son to it as well and he has been noticeably non-smelly ever since - that is powerful stuff! He is a very clean young man so was never hugely whiffy but definitely used to be a bit stinky at the end of the day esp after PE. Since using glycolic acid - nothing.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 05/02/2025 19:04

I was given a small Fussy one at Xmas and actually I was really surprised by how well it lasted. Would definitely buy another.

Lowhangingfruitisthebest · 05/02/2025 19:16

I used to use mitchum with no bother then, all of a sudden for no discernable reason I started to smell like beef stew cooking on the hob!
It was a horrendous few weeks until I tried sure maximum strength (the 96 hr one) and now I am back to smelling only of my perfume!
I don't test the 96 hrs as I shower daily but I absolutely wouldn't have any confidence in natural deodorant, I would rather take my chances with the chemicals.

user2848502016 · 05/02/2025 19:21

I did use wild for a while and I didn't smell of BO exactly but didn't smell fresh either!
That was the best natural deodorant I've tried.
I've gone back to spray deodorant now, I'm thinking at least it's metal so easy to recycle

DearOwl · 05/02/2025 19:24

I really liked Fussy and I really like Native which I bought for ages at some expense as they're American. Currently using Monster Gummy bear

However I have a problem with all of them and that is they make me sore. My underarms go red and rashy so there's an ingredient in them all causing this unfortunately

They work in that I never smell though but can't take the rash!

LadeedahYadaYada · 05/02/2025 19:29

Deodorant is just a scent. If you have stinky pits then an anti-perspirant is what you need. Only 1 works for and it's the Vichy roll on (red top). It works 48 hrs - not a whiff whatsoever. And clothes last more than 1 wear as no smelly pits either.

KimFan · 05/02/2025 15:25

Sadly I don't find natural deodorants any good whatsoever. Lovely idea, but it's good old Mitchum for me!

Same. Loved fussy for yers till per ]I menopause hit, then jeez I was stinky 😂

Mitchum the only safe option now. Would love to avoid aluminium but just unpleasant if I do..😝

Vinvertebrate · 05/02/2025 19:45

I recently started using Fussy and it’s pretty meh. Fine for my underarms as I’m not a very sweaty person, but much less effective than a “proper” anti-perspirant iykwim. I seem to remember that the main ingredient is tapioca? (Unless I dreamt it!)

Twizzling the roll-on bit all the way back to the bottom when the refill runs out is a pain in the mammaries as well.

LindorDoubleChoc · 05/02/2025 19:56

I invested in one of these refillable deodorants and the three refills. The first one seemed to last about a week before it needed changing. Changing it was really really difficult and complicated, I had to search out a You Tube video to manage it. I am sadly not impressed. Can't remember if it was Wild or Fussy, sorry.

I'm not particularly sweaty and get on fine with the Sanex aluminium free deodorant stick and it seems to last 3 or 4 months at least.

coldcallerbaiter · 05/02/2025 19:58

I just use any strong essential oil. If there is sweat smell , It covers it.

Chillilounger · 05/02/2025 19:58

I recommend salt rock and illex. If your boy is used to normal deodorants you have to put up with a week of reeking as the crap works it's wat out of your body though before the natural deodorant starts to work.

Sapphire29 · 05/02/2025 20:15

I used mitchum for years then decided to try aluminium free roll ons. I tried Wild and Bionsen and have now gone back to mitchum.

FrauPaige · 05/02/2025 20:16

The most effective thing I found was to change what my body was excreting in the first place - so, very low red meat, high fibre and vegetable diet, and loads and loads of water. If I shower first and last thing and am vigorous with the sponge in the underarms, my nuud just stays in the cabinet untouched

NannyR · 05/02/2025 20:18

I tried Wild but found it very irritating and not that effective. Salt crystals work brilliantly for me (salt of the earth or pitrok), they work much better than Mitchum or Sure at keeping me odour free, and they last for years.

Fedupwithneighbours · 05/02/2025 20:23

Fussy gave me sore broken skin.
used to use a crystal one which I liked, but I dropped it and it broke and was unusable.
so just went back to the regular ones

comoatoupeira · 05/02/2025 20:24

I like fussy, no white marks.
i tried wild and got white marks.
