I wait all day to get back into bed

Frigginfreeezing · 04/02/2025 21:56

Is this weird, some sort of depression or normal?

I just can’t wait to get back into bed at night

Heater on, fluffy pjs, just warm and under the covers with my phone and just peace.

I don’t have this in summer as much, so I know it’s to do with the cold and wanting to be warm and relaxed too

I think about it towards late afternoon a lot

Anyone else the same?

My bedroom is my sanctuary, sometimes I go up to bed 7.30 - 8 after the kids are fed (they are older). I put my PJs on when I get in from work at 3pm if I don't need to go back out. I can't think of anything better - literally - than sitting in bed with a cuppa and a good book or Netflix!

Almostwelsh · 05/02/2025 07:59

Electric light and central heating has only been available for a relatively short time compared to human existence. Until fairly recently most people would have gone to bed early in winter and slept a lot more in winter than summer.

Possibly a lot of seasonal depression is a reaction to us not following our natural winter rhythm.

MrsPeregrine · 05/02/2025 08:00

I understand where you are coming from OP, but I think it’s sad that people are going to bed earlier because they are cold and can’t afford overpriced gas and electric prices. I feel like we are being ground down into accepting this as the new norm when really it’s unacceptable.

Franjipanl8r · 05/02/2025 08:11

Are you getting enough vitamin D and fresh air? Lack of both of these can keep our body in sleep mode.

Sinkintotheswamp · 05/02/2025 08:14

I do this. It's the only time no one needs me.

marshmallowfinder · 05/02/2025 08:15

Oh yes, this is me completely. I love it.

Come on, op. Do you really think depressed people think things like I can’t wait to get my fluffy pj’s on and get cosy and relaxed?

Of course they do. Depression doesn't mean you can't appreciate anything in life.....for some depressed people all they have to look forward to is cosiness and solitude.

Well you’re posting on a public forum, and so people can respond to any comments they want to.

Sure, you can, but it's still the OP's reply I am actually interested in (not your attempts to start a fire in a swimming pool).

I think depression doesn't always look the same - someone once told me it's more about changes as opposed to actual behaviours, and I think that's partly true.

I think we are designed to...not hibernate as such but go into a minimal state in the winter. I think, because we don't, we have a host of issues as a result.

No animal stays rabidly active as we are expected to all year. It's unhealthy.

I definitely feel the urge to just stay in a dim cool environment and just sleep in a warm bed at this time of year in the UK.

I entirely agree with this. My cat slows down a lot in winter and just wants to eat and nap a lot of the time. So do I but sadly I still have to earn a living and run my house Grin

I have a busy life and generally don't get to bed until 10.30, but it's still the highlight of my day!

It's normal to want to sleep/rest more in winter, but it's also a good idea to get out in the fresh air as much as you can too - exercise is important but so is being outside (as opposed to in an office, a school, a factory or even a gym).

Blobbitymacblob · 05/02/2025 08:55

Winter is for hibernation, or as close as we can manage.

Just one question- are you warmly dressed? I can’t bear to be wearing thick layers but I’ve discovered silk vests and (real) wool jumpers are vastly warmer than synthetics. Keep an eye on the charity shops, especially in the summer.

tattoonewbie · 05/02/2025 09:16

I woke up and thought this exact thing about how I couldn't wait for bedtime having only just woken up. I am hoping it's SAD rather than depression but it's a close call and I am generally low at the minute and not finding joy in much

Midnightlove · 05/02/2025 09:19

I've just taken DS to school and now I'm back in bed 🤣 yes I'm probably a lazy sod

They do. Speaking from experience.

Absolutely

Fluffyc1ouds · 05/02/2025 09:37

I'm with you! The days feel like such a waste sitting at a desk all day. I want to get back into bed the second I'm up!

Ilovelowry · 05/02/2025 09:37

I often lie in bed after my alarm goes off and work out how many hours it is until I can go back to bed.

But I hate a hot bed, it has to be very cold between the sheets and then I sleep deeply.

Yesterday I was on the bed by 7.45 and asleep an hour later. Bliss. Having teenagers is a dream compared to the years of lying with small people and trying to escape from their rooms without the floorboards creaking.

notnorman · 05/02/2025 09:42

StormingNorman · 04/02/2025 22:14

I’m like this too. Going back to bed is the first thing I think about when I get up in the morning (after snoozing for 40 minutes).

Me too.
Think we must be related 🤣

Whatisthisbs · 04/02/2025 22:08

Bed and a cup of tea. Brings me so much joy

Me too. Especially if DP is downstairs watching the football, so I get two full hours on my own in my favourite place.

Do you think the OP sounds depressed? Do you think she is genuinely wondering if looking forward to bedtime is a symptom of a mental illness?

AmberElliston · 05/02/2025 09:54

Midnightlove · 05/02/2025 09:32

Absolutely

They don’t in my experience.
They think things like I can’t wait for this day to be over or I can’t get up and face the day.

OnlyThickBeans · 05/02/2025 10:02

It’s normal in winter IMO.

peachystormy · 05/02/2025 10:20

I am the same OP

85pinkballoons · 05/02/2025 16:27

I'm in bed right now and I'm blissfully happy. I've had a busy week so far and I'll be busy tomorrow and Friday, but the rest of today is free.

I have the house to myself, the room is warm and peaceful, I have hot tea and cake, a book and Netflix. I can't think of anything I'd rather do on my afternoon off, I find it so restful and restorative to snuggle into the blankets and drift away to another world through books or films. A bit of mumsnet scrolling is nice too Smile
