DD demanding chocolate when she's on her period

Homeymum2 · 04/02/2025 16:35

My 14 yo DD insists that all her friends parents buy them chocolates and pamper them when they are cycling -

I'm being told I'm a terrible mum and badgered for chocolates

Am I an outlier to not cater to this?

If my child asked me nicely, I would happily go buy her some chocolate.

If she demanded it then there’s no way I would buy it.

On Mumsnet if you don’t keep a chocolate drawer or treat cupboard then you must be a competitive under eater. No, how about trying to get chn into good habits and only having treats occasionally? Chocolate and cakes is not a daily food. It’s for occasional treats and should be in small amounts.

Edited

Luckily the child is only asking for it once a month. The very definition of an occasional treat!

Thanks everybody -

We have lots of cookies and crisps and a few sweets almost all the time - kids (2 girls) are not deprived or restricted - we always have nice things and everything they need - which is why I feel a bit taken aback by being expected to supply extras on demand -

Well I don’t think she feels she has everything she needs, as she doesn’t have chocolate when she’s on her period!

I don’t really understand why you can’t just get some/keep some in for her?

Are you really against throwing a bar of choc into the weekly shop, or is it her attitude that’s really bothering you? I can’t quite work it out.

Yeah and she can get it at her age. Demands are not acceptable. I want doesn’t get.

Fizbosshoes · 04/02/2025 18:51

We got loads of chocolate for Christmas, I eat chocolate every day but there are still 2 unopened boxes. Technically they were given to me, but as far as I'm concerned they're family chocolates.....although as DD is at uni, and DS isn't keen on chocolate I probably will eat most of them and leave the ones I don't like for DH

ohyesido · 04/02/2025 18:51

Bit mean to deny it outright but also not unreasonable not to give in to demands

FrustratedandBemused · 04/02/2025 18:51

But I thought your issue was that chocolate should only be an occasional treat and only in small amounts? You didn’t mention anything about the method of asking?

I did upthread.
My later comment was in response to those that are shocked people don’t keep chocolate stashes.

😂😂

GreyCarpet · 04/02/2025 18:52

I'm surprised at how many people don't have chocolate in their house routinely. But I like to keep very well stocked cupboards of pretty much most food stuffs

I was going to say the opposite tbh.

We dont keep.chcolates, biscuits or anything like that in the house.

The cupboards are always well stocked but it's bonkers that people keep so much chocolate in stock!

TorroFerney · 04/02/2025 18:53

Quinlan · 04/02/2025 16:37

Maybe I’m a bit weird but surely there is chocolate available in the house? I mean, not loads but it’s a pretty normal thing to have in the snacky box for when someone fancies a treat snack.
Just buy some chocolate?

Nope, not in our house, we do not have a snacky box.

Periods don't need chocolate that won't make her feel better, exercise helps. I'd never know my daughter is on her period unless I empty the bathroom bin. I would be sympathetic if required and offer painkillers as that will actually be some help.

Epidote · 04/02/2025 18:53

I only eat chocolate and fancy a chocolate drink the day before I have my period, is fancying chocolate and within a day have it. There must be something in chocolate that helps I suppose.
The demanding bit and make you like you are an orc for not do as other do is out of order in any case.

Tigergirl80 · 04/02/2025 18:54

Does she get pocket money? My nanna used to buy us the odd treat. But anything else we wanted I was always expected to buy out of that. We’ve still got chocolates left from Christmas. Then we’ll have more chocolates for Easter ds and ds get a few Easter eggs bought from them. I like dessert’s rather than chocolate during my period.

Wonderi · 04/02/2025 18:54

Comedycook · 04/02/2025 18:15

Just had a look in my cupboard....we've got twirls, galaxy ripples, toffee crisps, mint aeros and freddo bars. There's also a chocolate fudge cake and come chocolate cookies.

I'm sure it would make the anti upf crew faint!

Chocolate Cake Movie GIF

What!!! 😱😱😱

Your cupboard is my dream but there’s no way it would still be there.

Are you and your family just not big chocolate eaters?

I really have to restrict how much chocolate I buy else I’ll just eat it all.

I tend to buy penguins or kitkats so still nice but not as nice your things, so I can limit myself to one a day.

If I had chocolate fudge cake it would be game over though

gallic · 04/02/2025 18:55

I'm quite torn on this.

Periods are part of everyday life so we should all get on with it. Unless there are extenuating circumstances maybe, but I don't think op mentioned any,

On the other hand, giving our children extra care and attention sometimes is a nice thing to do.

I do think this generation is woefully lacking in resilience though, but god knows why that actually is.

anon4net · 04/02/2025 18:55

I have very different cravings and food needs when I am on my period. I told my consultant OB this once before and she [senior OB, Professor and Researcher] told me that it is actually science - certain foods help with pain relief and/or reduce feelings of discomfort, regulate mood etc., especially when menstruating. I crave salt, fizzy drinks with caffeine and lots and lots of ice-cubes. Friends crave chocolate.

Be kind. She's not asking 'on demand'. How else is she supposed to ask?

WilmaTitsDrop · 04/02/2025 18:56

Does she not get pocket money?

If so, she can buy her own.

I wouldn't be pampering anyone just because they're on a period.

Different if they're in pain obviously, but otherwise ridiculous.

Nospringchix · 04/02/2025 18:56

ERthree · 04/02/2025 16:53

And here is the reason why we have entitled adults. Having a period is part of normal life for females. Who pampers you every month? Do you take to your bed for the duration ? Women died for the women of today to be taken seriously and to be treated as equals and attitudes like this set us back half a century. Can you imagine a female soldier on the front line demanding time for a pamper session because she has her period ? No she just has to bloody well get on with it.

But she is a teen who has probably not had periods for very long is still needs time to adjust.
When mine started they were very painful and it came as a surprise just how painful they were, and I therefore appreciated some comfort from my mam dring those first couple of years.
It didn't make me entitled or unable to suck it up and go to work.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 04/02/2025 18:57

cookies crisps and sweets are not chocolate

Christmas was over one month ago

Beesandhoney123 · 04/02/2025 18:57

Yes to chocolate. Dd doesn't have to ask:)
And yes, kindness and empathy. Periods are not fun. Everyone has to find a way to deal with them.
Chocolate, hot water bottle and a film with me are good memories.

gallic · 04/02/2025 18:57

Also, "snacky box" ffs 😑

Demanding - Get me chocolate! I want it now!
Requesting- Mum I don’t feel well and I really fancy some chocolate, would you mind picking some up for me on your way home?
Nobody wants to encourage the former.

beachcitygirl · 04/02/2025 18:58

Did she actually "demand "
Or did she ask ?

Periods are bloody awful for some
Women & girls - mine were and my daughters are.

They always get time off from chores, blanket on the sofa, hot water bottle
& a packet of buttons or whatever.

Because as their mum I recognise that it's a horrible & sometimes painful time - that boys don't have to deal
With. So I'm delighted to pamper them as above.
why the hell would
Anyone not? Beyond me.
