Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico

Stop buying American goods after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico.

He says it’s because of phen and illegal immigration - less than 1% come from Canada.

This will have significant implications for the Canadian economy, the American economy and by domino the world. Not to mention the fact it could start a significant trade war.

The US doesn’t subsidise Canada - they buy Canadian goods. Approx 40% of their crude oil comes from Canada for example.

There is also an agreed trade deal between the US/Canada and Mexico that Trump agreed to and signed in his first years in office.

YABU - it doesn’t matter to me
YANBU - let’s stand up to a bully and support our allies

Thank you for these stats. Exactly right on the electricity - we all remember when in the summer of 2003 when millions and millions of people lost power in Ontario and the eastern seaboard (yeah the American blamed Canada and it was soon discovered it was a problem isn’t an American transformer station). We are so intrinsically linked turning off the lights isn’t actually out of the question.

Unfortunately threatening Trump like that could have consequences.

DS and I were talking about this - how Trump demands respect.

"Hey Canada, nice country, wouldn't it be a shame if something happened to it"

SwedishEdith · 02/02/2025 10:15

I guess wines and spirits, almonds, prunes, that kind of thing is definitely directly imported. Ironically, a lot from California which is not a Trump state. Netflix? I don't buy coke, KFC, McDonald's or Starbucks - and, even if I did, boycotting them here hits UK jobs.

WinterMorn · 02/02/2025 10:15

Upstartled · 02/02/2025 09:30

No, thanks. It doesn't matter to me.

And that sort of “not my problem” approach is why the world is in this current mess.

Rainingalldayonmyhead · 02/02/2025 10:15

So people are asking about what they can do and it’s harder over here. I would think about alcohol, orange juice and condiments.

  • Google AI says *United Kingdom: The UK imports peanuts from Argentina, Brazil, the Netherlands, and Nicaragua* . I appreciate that the AI itself is from America though. I must have missed all the peanut farms in the Netherlands all the times I've been there.

I think a lot of countries around the world will be looking for more stable markets than the US for their products. Trump may (or may not) have the upper hand at the minute, but he's sowing seeds that may affect the US for many years to come. If I was running a company with a lot of trade with the US I would urgently be looking for other markets and suppliers, it sounds ridiculous to say but trading with the US has suddenly become too risky.

The tit for tat tariff war is not going to be good for anyone whatever Trump thinks.

What I don't understand is how one man can have the power to instigate such massive decisions. Surely there is a team of economists and advisors and the decisions are made collectively? I mean, Trump is an idiot, in no way a good businessman let alone an economist, and mad to boot. How can he unilaterally make these decisions?!

theDudesmummy · 02/02/2025 10:17

I would have thought most immigrants or asylum seekers would prefer to get to Canada, with its free healthcare and generally better benefits system? I have no actual idea about the figures though. Having lived in Canada (where I did in fact need some quite expensive and specialised heathcare, which was completely free) and spent time in the US, I just know where I would rather be, for many reasons.

That's what I was thinking. I would definitely boycott but I'm not sure what I currently buy that would make a difference.

The only American thing I knowingly buy is the lovely milkshakes Lidl sells during their occasional American themed weeks. But seeing as they are manufactured in this country I don't think it would count!

madamweb · 02/02/2025 10:18

What products are you suggesting we boycott?

Yes this is what I find baffling. Why does so much power sit with the president?

SwedishEdith · 02/02/2025 10:19

I thought Trudeau's speech was pretty good. Maybe this paves the way for Carney to be next Canadian PM (wishful thinking). The UK is weak here and needs to be in trade bloc with its nearest neighbours - blindingly obvious. I wonder why it's not? Oh.

He has to have a hard line to stop illegal immigration so I'm fine with it.

Oh get real!

Because he's King. And not a modern day King like Charles. The Henry VIII type. With his court.

Possibly a stupid question.... but as he "only" put 10% on fuel , why not increase that internally to 25%/40% and sell your fuel elsewhere? Practical or dumb?

On a side note, what's the chances of Carney getting elected, or is Canada likely to swing more right wing, just wondering how this might shift again as leaderships change?

Maybe I'm being naive, but a country does tend to pull together when it's under attack from another country, be it economically or in a war.

Parker231 · 02/02/2025 10:23

Trudeau is suggesting to Canadians not to holiday in the US. We don’t although we do visit DSil in Colorado and like going over to Burlington in VT for lunch and shopping.

Treaclewell · 02/02/2025 10:25

Are we all using Microsoft? Is Linux based in the USA?
T is also planning to shut down the NOOA system of satellites monitoring weather and climate. And their bases in Antarctica.
Forget about Gilead, he's aiming for Little House on the Prairie. With a flat Earth.
I had a friend who claims to have a friendship with Musk. He's targetting us. And there's not a lot we can do except hope for a ketamine OD. Or passing aliens to break the Prime Directive.

Goldenbear · 02/02/2025 10:27

Rainingalldayonmyhead · 02/02/2025 09:41

Oh but it will. It will when he expands this programme and since world economies are so entertwined it will
have a knock on effect. All top economists are saying so. It’s naive to think otherwise.

Also the attitude annoys me - WW2 was ‘nothing to do’ with Canadians and we sent thousands of troops and fought along side. We are a Commonwealth country, ally and friend.

Yes, so simplistic, the global economy is intertwined, of course this is going to impact the UK economy!

I think George III might be a more apt comparison

Createausername1970 · 02/02/2025 10:28

I'd rather buy American than Chinese.

I admire the scale of the Chinese factories, some of them are mind blowing. But I really wish they weren't there and there was actually more choice across the board.

I try to buy British first and foremost, but some stuff is either non-existent or the cost is prohibitive.

Who is really running the US at the moment?

WinterMorn · 02/02/2025 10:29

I love Canada. I love America. It’s awful to see this happening - and I am completely backing Canada in this!

AdoraBell · 02/02/2025 10:29

I can’t think of anything I buy of American goods.
