And the relative wanted a cuddle, would you get a sleeping baby out of the pram and risk waking them up for this- they’re in a bit of a phase of fighting daytime naps and rarely have a non contact nap, but the family member hasn’t seen baby in a few weeks and is sad about it

We have different opinions so I’d just be interested to know what the consensus is!

These responses make me feel so much better 😁 mil used to say we were being silly and making a fuss over nothing when we refused to wake them up for her. It genuinely used to completely mess up their sleeping patterns so they would be awake for half the night for the next couple of days, leaving everyone dog tired and grumpy for ages just so she could cuddle! We stood firm and refused. I actually caught her poking DD once to try and wake her up!

LegoHouse274 · 01/02/2025 17:03

Absolutely not!!

SunshineAndFizz · 01/02/2025 17:05

Absolutely not!

If they ask for a hold simply say 'oh it's taken me ages to get them asleep, sorry you'll have to wait until next time.'

How would you deal with the relative if they looked disappointed or if they asked outright ‘can I hold?’

I think internally I’d be thinking “absolutely fucking not 😂😂😂” but out loud I’d say something like “oh I don’t want to wake him, he’s a nightmare when he hasn’t napped”. I don’t really care about the disappointment tbh, if they’ve got kids they know not to wake a sleeping baby and it’s selfish of them to ask.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/02/2025 17:08

No, and surely no sane person would ask when they can see the baby is asleep?

Margorett · 01/02/2025 17:08

as a grandmother, NO.

DisforDarkChocolate · 01/02/2025 17:09

Nope. It would cross my mind to ask this, or let you know I was sad.

Itiswhysofew · 01/02/2025 17:14

No, & I wouldn't touch someone elses baby either. I'd wait to be offered.

Sacredhandbag · 01/02/2025 17:15

Never. Not for all the tea in china.

“Of course!…. When they wake up” and change the subject.

YourHappyJadeEagle · 01/02/2025 17:16

I thought there was an unwritten law- never wake a sleeping baby.
Relative is upset at nit holding a baby, they need to get a grip. It’s not all about them.

Pinkelephant66 · 01/02/2025 17:17

No way. I presume they don’t have kids of their own?

MarioLink · 01/02/2025 17:17

No way. Not fair on baby or you.

SquawkerTexasRanger · 01/02/2025 17:18

I’d give them the buggy to rock and then they can coo at the baby at the same time (assuming it’s parent facing). If they touch them and they wake up you’re well within your rights to stab them with your fork

BarbaraHoward · 01/02/2025 17:19

I wouldn't wake the baby, but I wouldn't end the meetup without the relative having a cuddle with the baby once they woke either - especially if the relative was the baby's granny.

witmum · 01/02/2025 17:20

No. Is a full sentence.

Your job as mum is to support your babies growth and development and they do that by sleeping. Therefore never feel bad for advocating for your child 🥰

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 01/02/2025 17:21

@parttimeworks no way! let sleeping babies sleep!

Nonaynevernomore · 01/02/2025 17:24

Nope

Zone2NorthLondon · 01/02/2025 17:30

No
i would decline saying baby is asleep, maybe next time, thanks for understanding

Musicofthespiers · 01/02/2025 17:31

Definitely not.

Say "the baby is sleeping right now, but when she wakes up you can hold her".
If your baby doesn't wake up by the time you're leaving the cafe then tough! They can hold the baby next time.

I'd ask them if they'd like me to come and lift them out of their bed when they're sleeping Grin

avocadotofu · 01/02/2025 17:34

Absolutely not!!

JoyeuxNarwhal · 01/02/2025 17:34

Seriously though the answer to "can I hold?" is clearly, no, not at the moment, maybe when they wake if they're not grouchy.

pizzaHeart · 01/02/2025 17:35

No.
Suggest they cuddle you?
