To think they call us Karen because they fear us

InformEducateEntertain · 01/02/2025 12:15

I absolutely hate the term Karen. It's pejorative and deeply unpleasant.

Middle aged women (of whom I am one and to whom the term is most generally applied) are bloody amazing. Putting us down for our don't give a f**k badass attitude and willingness to fight back strikes me as lazy categorisation.

I'd go as far to say that those who use it are scared by the knowledge that looking the menopause in the eye has given us the courage to have a voice at last.

I think until we have a police force that hasn’t ingrained institutional racism we could then give clear figures of white woman using their position to make false claims against black men

but we do not live in a completely fair and everyone is treated equally without prejudice society

Porcuporpoise · 01/02/2025 17:23

I don't intend to spend any time demonstrating the existence of racism to you, any more than I would spend my time demonstrating that the earth is roughly spherical and orbits the sun. If you are interested you can easily find the information you require yourself. If you wish to believe the contrary then there'll be plenty on line to support those beliefs too.

The name for men that rape is rapists btw. I don't think a more coy term is necessary or desirable.

I’m not asking you to prove the existence of racism. I’m only asking you to prove what you’ve claimed - that there’s thousands of documented cases of white women leveraging their whiteness to falsely accuse black men. I mean if there’s thousands why wouldn’t you even show me one?

JandamiHash · 01/02/2025 17:26

I’ve seen the Amy Cooper thing and can’t find any more documented cases of women leveraging their witness to falsely accuse black men. I see lot of cases where people have recorded half videos out of context of women making complaints (some of whom clearly have learning disabilities). But as for these thousands of white women making racist false accusations - I’m stumped to find more than one

JandamiHash · 01/02/2025 17:27

But we don’t call all men of a certain demographic Rapist do we? There’s no “Rapist in the Wild” videos on TikTok because a man complained about something is there?

Doggymummar · 01/02/2025 17:29

It's not a term just for women, it's men as well, anyone acting a dick seems fair game.

Livelovebehappy · 01/02/2025 17:34

Mysterian · 01/02/2025 12:26

Karen isn't just a name for older women with attitude. It's for those being very obviously wrong. For example, calling the police on a black man sitting minding his own business in a park because 'his type don't belong there'.

Well maybe if this is the case, the meaning needs to be shared out there more widely, because the majority of times it’s used, it’s not in the context you’ve described. I find it’s used by people who aren’t too bright, against anyone who doesn’t agree with them. They’re not intelligent enough to debate the point, so just resort to throwing the insult out there.

SilverDoe · 01/02/2025 17:39

MumblesParty · 01/02/2025 15:34

I’m sure they have been. But in general it could be seen as risky to be abusive towards a non-white woman, because of racism laws. But luckily (for the kind of people who use the term Karen in a derogatory way) there is no protection in law for middle aged white women. They can call us what they like, and if we complain, they feel vindicated!

This might not be the case.

I've seen some interesting articles from black women about descriptive biases towards white women.

An example is the unconscious bias we generally have towards the descriptors "blonde" and "brunette". Most people would imagine a white woman based off of either hair colour.

So I really don't think the most likely options is that it's a white centric term because people are conscious of upsetting black women! It's much more likely to be the case that they are simply overlooking black women.

If you actually put yourself through it and watched some "crazy Karen" or "public freakout" videos, you will quickly see that the term applies to a wide variety of ages; some of the most viral women are pretty young.

I’ll wait for the many millions of cases then that you know doubt can show me

To be honest I really shouldn’t need it. It’s a widely known fact that this is what has happened in America for over a hundred years. From lynchings of black men, to Emmett Till, to the Central Park 5. This is not new and I’m shocked that anyone can even pretend it is.

To whoever said that (collectively) middle aged women are not brilliant I think you are wrong.

In many cases they are dealing with complex family scenarios, holding down jobs, caring for elderly parents all while their bodies are leeching oestrogen and making it hard for them to think straight.

The middle aged women I know deal with this on the whole with humour and a determination not to let it get them down. They also generally have stopped worrying what others think of them and are, at last, free to make their wishes clear. This does not mean that they are rude or unpleasant in their dealings with people. Just that they refuse to crawl under a rock and accept that 'the change' means the end of them as functioning members of society which our largely patriarchal society is more comfortable with.

It worries me that so many women think it is ok to dismiss these great people with such an unpleasant pejorative term but twas ever thus.

Honestly. You need to stop

I'm a woman.

I'm middle aged.

Do you not think that by claiming to be the voice of 'middle aged women' you doing exactly the same as the people you claim to despise?

Pigeonholing 'middle aged women' as a general specific class is pretty offensive.

You know bugger all about my menopause.

Making it hard for them to think straight.

I could almost suspect you were a plant to discredit 'middle aged women' coming out with that kind of bollox.

The vast majority of KKK members are men and women very rarely participated in lynching.

Only men killed Emmet Till. No women.

Trisha Meili was out jogging then was raped and severely beaten to the point she had a broken skull. she did not named the 5 wrongly accused of her rape. Two male detectives led the case against the Central Park 5

Nice of you to blame women for men’s failures though. none of these are examples of “women using their whiteness to falsely accuse black men”. In fact what you’ve done is wrongly blame a rape victim for the false imprisonment of men, when in fact it was men who led that.

Any ACTUAL examples you care to share of women weaponising their whiteness against black men?

JandamiHash · 01/02/2025 18:03

I’m actually disgusted that someone has likened a rape victim who spent 2 weeks in a coma because of her beating to a ‘Karen’. Have a fucking word with yourself.

It only supports the argument that people who condone the use of Karen hate women

MumblesParty · 01/02/2025 18:21

I think it’s now largely irrelevant what the origins of “Karen” as a derogatory term were. The fact is it’s offensive to anyone who is called Karen. And it’s been picked up by people who want to have a cheap easy way of putting down middle aged women who are simply existing. And sadly OP, I don’t think it’s because they’re scared of us. I think it’s because we’re an easy target and it’s fun to try and shut us up by telling us we’re just making an unnecessary fuss.

This can't be serious. Do you know anything about the Central Park 5 case?

As for blaming the actual lynching of a teenager on a woman who wasn't present, this is yet more deflection. There's no evidence of Carolyn Bryant making those accusations prior to her (violent, KKK member) husband appearing in court charged with murder. Klan members lynching black people is a stain on history but it is not the fault of women.

NeedWineNow · 01/02/2025 18:44

Try having Karen as your name, as I have.

And then try being blonde and early 60’s, as I am.

And then try being too embarrassed to give your name because of sarky and derogatory remarks, not being able to respond on a social media post without someone bringing your name into it, being in work and correcting a trainee solicitor only to hear her deriding you as ‘Karen by name, Karen by nature’.

I could go on.

It hurts, simple as.

To be clear @GretchenWienersHair used the Central Park 5 as an example of, and I quote The word “Karen” started in the Black American community when white women would call the police on black people for little to no reason at all after I asked her for examples of documented Karen’s.

So she is saying the rape victim is a Karen - when in fact Trish Meili, the only significant female player in this case, was in a coma whilst the 5 men were wrongfully arrested

Fucking hell women can’t even get raped without being referred to as Karen’s. Disgusting

Well look at you accusing me of something I didn’t do and rallying the troops to join you in admonishing me. Sounds like something a white woman weaponising her whiteness would do. Shock.

So tell me the @GretchenWienersHair why when I asked for examples of *white women [who] call the police on black people for little to no reason at all you gave the example of the Central Park 5? Where the only white woman involved was a victim of rape and in a coma whilst black men were getting arrested by male detectives?

Or Emmet Hill who was lynched my only men?

And nice try playing the “only a white woman” card but only one person is implying a rape victim is a Karen here.
