To think they call us Karen because they fear us

I absolutely hate the term Karen. It's pejorative and deeply unpleasant.

Middle aged women (of whom I am one and to whom the term is most generally applied) are bloody amazing. Putting us down for our don't give a f**k badass attitude and willingness to fight back strikes me as lazy categorisation.

I'd go as far to say that those who use it are scared by the knowledge that looking the menopause in the eye has given us the courage to have a voice at last.

The word “Karen” started in the Black American community when white women would call the police on black people for little to no reason at all. For example, jogging in public, having a family gathering in a public park, etc. etc. They did this knowing about police brutality towards Black Americans and were weaponising their whiteness. So yes, they were called Karen because people feared them.

White men not causing any trouble then?

@Fencehedge perhaps we should stop using a perfectly innocuous name to describe a set of unpleasant personality traits and behaviours…

It's not unique that a personal name has been used in this way.

Certain men used to be called a Kevin..

People will probably get bored of it in a few years

MumblesParty · 01/02/2025 15:36

RisingSunn · 01/02/2025 15:25

Exactly.
Funnily enough. I was seated at my local cafe a few hours ago. The server brought my mocha in a takeaway cup - when I was obviously not taking away.

I called her back and asked for a cup and saucer. She rectified it and I thanked her.

No drama. No fuss.

Like you said - what is coined being a “Karen” is the unnecessary belittling behaviour and drama.

Edited

@RisingSunn you’re deluded I’m afraid. Asking for a different cup is 100% Karen behaviour in the eyes of many, I can assure you.

Do we not have the term cunt then?

No, the term "cunt" belongs to everyone.

I know lots of cunts. Some cunts have dicks and some cunts have cunts, but their genitalia has no bearing on their general cuntiness.

Women of colour are women…

But not generally called Karens.

Why?

I know! I know!!

Something about privilege... 😉

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 01/02/2025 15:31

Can you share some of these videos?

I've yet to see someone get called a Karen for politely sending back food they didn't order.

I can’t be bothered to trawl through YouTube but trust me, the evidence is there. Scroll back up and you’ll see a picture someone posted of a group of 4 women sitting at a table being called Karens.

SharpOpalNewt · 01/02/2025 15:40

The only time I've been called one was when I was telling a younger man off (in an Audi, of course 😂) for how he had just driven straight past a passing place on a country lane and needed to reverse.

No. Shouting about the cup is 100% Karen (in the eyes of many).

I am always assertive when I need to be - and I have never been referred to as a Karen neither online or offline.

Of course white men cause trouble. That was the point. White women using thier white privilege to use white cops against black people.

No. Shouting about a cup is 100% mean and unreasonable. That person could be either gender or any age. No need to use the term "Karen".

How do you know the cafe server didn’t say to her colleagues “ffs that bloody Karen wants a different cup”? They’re not going to say it to your face are they, they’d get sacked!

Then it doesn't matter, does it? What other people think of you in secret is none of your business.

If someone is not a Karen then no need to get offended if an idiot thinks they're a Karen.

So the idea is white men (the cops) are only causing trouble because some woman put them up to it?

What about the white men (cops or otherwise) who have actually killed black people? Is that some woman’s fault as well?

That’s true.

So if servers (for example) are not saying it to people’s faces.

Where is everyone being called a Karen then?

Because I have never been called one. (That I know of!)

Why would that matter? The server could have called her many offensive things behind her back.

Or do you mean people shouldn't even be allowed to think someone is a Karen?

You can look yourself.
Do you have any involvement with teenagers? Do you watch or overhear tiktok?
You can believe what you like, and if you want to you can think I’m a liar (although I can’t for the life of me think what anyone would get from lying to randoms on MN about this). But I can assume you, 100%, stake my life on it, many many people use the term “Karen” to describe a middle aged woman who has not behaved badly at all. If you haven’t come across it on social media, then that’s fine. But it does happen, a lot.

Whippetlovely · 01/02/2025 15:50

It's nothing to do with being middle aged. It's just a general term for a woman who is entitled and rude.

@Fencehedge but that poster was basically saying she wasn’t a Karen, and was therefore unaffected by any of this. I was pointing out that she can’t be sure of that.

And why should we care exactly what random teenagers incorrectly call someone? If its not Karen it'd be something else

If its your own teens being simply sexist and ageist, you educate them.

Think its gone out of fashion now tbh

LessonsinChemistryandLove · 01/02/2025 15:53

I find this discussion on here very interesting every time this comes up. In my social circle, anyone can be a ‘Karen’ male or female, and it’s used to describe a particular type of entitled and offensive behaviour. I think the connection to middle aged white woman, is that often times it was/is middle aged white woman who were using this type of behaviour to exert power over others who they considered less than. I think many black people would understand this and have experienced this.

MorrisZapp · 01/02/2025 15:53

Peak misogyny. Women are responsible for what men do. Almost as if men aren't choice making humans fully accountable for their own actions.

@RisingSunn to their friends, maybe posting on social media about it. Anywhere really. Personally I don’t care what any random person calls me, to my face or behind my back, if I’m certain I’ve done nothing wrong. But just because I’m not bothered by it doesn’t make it OK.
