A man called me stupid in front of my daughter

As I was exiting the lift with my two-year-old in the pram, another pram went out ahead of us. Since I was backing out, I didn’t realize they were still near the elevator entrance, and I accidentally bumped into the woman with the other pram. I was looking at my phone while maneuvering, but I immediately apologized. However, her husband deliberately said, "She’s on her phone, she’s stupid." My little girl heard it and repeated, "Mum, are you stupid." I was absolutely fuming and really wanted to retaliate. I was so angry and told him that I already apologized and I think you're stupid and rude. I know I should have just ignored it but it really made me so angry.

I mean, it kinda reads like a drip feed… it’s gone from looking at your phone, to waiting for a phone call from GP, to someone was ringing you 🤷‍♀️

Yeah get off ya phone and look where you're going.
Im sure op would hear it if it rang.

Springsunshine28 · 31/01/2025 14:07

Someone's ringing me and I thought it was my gp.

But you can still wait until you get out of the lift, the phone rings for a while before it goes to voicemail.

Edited it cause I misread, I thought you said your husband called you stupid.

I would have called him out on that, a complete stranger

Edited due to the edit LOL

So first post - you are looking at your phone
Second post - you have two hands on the pram waiting for a phone call
Third post - someone is ringing you.

Which is the correct version?

FoxtonFoxton · 31/01/2025 14:12

Who cares? She's two, she won't remember. It's just some stranger you won't meet again. If he thinks you are stupid, does it matter? No. Forget about it. If the worse you ever get called is stupid, you are winning. You should hear some of the stuff I've been called by the general public during my career, just for existing. I find it quite funny.

LizzoBennett · 31/01/2025 14:06

It's the type of thing that I would have said to my DH out of earshot of the perpetrator. You were being a bit stupid. He shouldn't have said anything in earshot.

I admit I was wrong. But he intentionally wanted me to hear it which is a bot of overkill .

No it's not.

It's his opinion and he was entitled to give it.

Just as you gave him yours 🤷‍♂️

And the GP is a red herring. It doesn't matter who was calling you. You wait until you can safely answer just like you would if you were driving at the time.

Yes so If you can imagine, I got my 2 hands on the pram while holding my phone as I was waiting for my gp to call back, then It rang as I was coming out so I was looking at it. It was on vibrate. But regardless, I know I was on the wrong here but I so I apologized. But after apologizing he said that I was stupid.

I wouldn't have got into it. You don't ever know what sort of crazy you are dealing with.

I would have said. The man is feeling angry because mummy bumped into him. Mummy is not stupid everyone makes mistakes. It's not nice to call people names.

Carpetmoths · 31/01/2025 14:18

It doesn’t sound like you were in the wrong at all- it’s not like you were texting, totally oblivious. Ignore all the silly buggers telling you it’s totally ok for a man to call you stupid!

Of course the OP was in the wrong for goodness sake.

Even SHE says she was!

Brefugee · 31/01/2025 14:22

Meh. They shouldn't have stopped close to the lift and you should have been concentrating not faffing on your phone. Too late now but "only arses come to a dead stop after exiting the lift" was the answer to that

vodkaredbullgirl · 31/01/2025 14:23

You were both in the wrong.

RudbekiasAreSun · 31/01/2025 14:25

well, anyway , move on and don't use the word < stupid > at home. It is one of the words kids once learn, cannot stop using.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 31/01/2025 14:25

Why is it wrong of him to call you stupid in front of your child but ok for you to call him stupid in front of your child?

I'm not sure why people don't understand that someone was calling you and you were checking if it was your GP who you were waiting to hear from. Anyway, he shouldn't have been rude after you had apologised, but it's good that you gave as good as you got.

Totally agree with this . Although I wish i could be upset at someone calling me stupid ir would mean my problems are so small

GinAndJuice99 · 31/01/2025 14:28

He sounds like a complete dickhead. Try not to waste any of your precious energy thinking about him any longer.

Carryingcarrying · 31/01/2025 14:28

I love that you said something back! Well done, people need more of that! You accidentally bumped into her, not the end of the world. Any normal human would have said it’s ok when you bumped into them. Imagine what he’s like to live with 😳

friendlycat · 31/01/2025 14:29

You didn't need to escalate it. You should have been concentrating on what you were doing not looking at your phone.

There are just too many people looking at their phones and not looking where they are going, what they are doing etc etc. It is actually stupid.

towelsandsheets · 31/01/2025 14:30

It wasn't accidental it was careless

Floatlikeafeather2 · 31/01/2025 14:25

Quite.

TheFatCatsWhiskers1 · 31/01/2025 14:33

Obviously he shouldn't have called you stupid, but when you've been bumped into or forced off the pavement time after time because someone is looking at their phone, it does start to grate. The most annoying one is where somebody suddenly stops directly in front of you, bonus points if it's at the top of an escalator. On a bad day I have on occasion muttered FFS at slightly louder than under breath level. That said, it wasn't him you bumped into so it wasn't something he said on reflex, and for that reason I think he is BU.

I wouldn't give it any further headspace.

FOJN · 31/01/2025 14:34

Put the ringer on and then you won't need to stare at your phone to know if an important call is incoming, you can stick it in your pocket and concentrate on what is happening in the here and now.

Honestly you ran the risk of falling over someone and you're offended they were annoyed. Put the bloody phone away the rest of us have important things to deal with too we just don't expect the rest of the world to have to get out of our way because we're not looking at what we're doing.
