A man called me stupid in front of my daughter

Springsunshine28 · 31/01/2025 13:50

As I was exiting the lift with my two-year-old in the pram, another pram went out ahead of us. Since I was backing out, I didn’t realize they were still near the elevator entrance, and I accidentally bumped into the woman with the other pram. I was looking at my phone while maneuvering, but I immediately apologized. However, her husband deliberately said, "She’s on her phone, she’s stupid." My little girl heard it and repeated, "Mum, are you stupid." I was absolutely fuming and really wanted to retaliate. I was so angry and told him that I already apologized and I think you're stupid and rude. I know I should have just ignored it but it really made me so angry.

You should have been looking where you were going tbf but can’t blame you for answering back.

She's admitted she was in the wrong but everyone falling over themselves to justify a man calling a woman stupid is rather bonkers. Is that how you all act to a mild inconvenience?

This is not the 1950s.

'Man/woman' has nothing to do with it.

of course it does

whatcanthematterbe81 · 31/01/2025 18:14

@IPM I realised I shouldn't have said man and woman. Knew that would get jumped on 😂 Regardless of sex, name calling is unnecessary

namechangetheworld · 31/01/2025 18:18

Oh please. We all know if the question was

"A man pushed a pram into me while his eyes were glued to his phone, and out of frustration I called him stupid. AIBU?"

the answers would be unanimously "definitely not, he should have been more careful, what an ignorant dickhead, he deserved to be called worse, etc etc."

You did a stupid, thoughtless thing, hurt someone, and got called out. Take your eyes off your phone next time.

Getitwright · 31/01/2025 18:24

Phone zombies are way up my list of “unintelligent and thoughtless. Regardless of what sex they are. 😉

Would you call them stupid tho?

IPM · 31/01/2025 18:31

DiddlyDiddly · 31/01/2025 18:14

of course it does

No it doesn't.

He didn't square up to her or threaten her.

He told his wife he thinks the OP is stupid and let's not forget, she was being stupid.

His sex has nothing to do with it.

I can assure you the one that knocked me off my bike got a lot more than stupid. People who are incapable of not giving proper attention to the health and safety of others, including their own children are definitely challenged. And some of the worst go on to do a lot more than back into another person.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 31/01/2025 18:36

@Getitwright ok

The problem is that there are so many people wandering around looking at their phones rather than where they’re going, that when someone might have a legitimate reason for doing so people don’t acknowledge that, because they’re used to being bumped into/barged out of the way because someone walks into them playing candy crush or texting.

Nobody was really in the wrong here. You were answering your phone which you needed to and apologised for bumping into them. On the other hand, they’re likely so used to inconsiderate phone users doing the same that it was a normal response. Because most people who are wandering down the street not looking where they’re going because they’re looking at their phones are stupid. It’s just unfortunate that you were branded a month the majority.

There’s no need (legitimate or otherwise) for anyone to stare at their phone to see if someone is calling, phones make a ringing noise to indicate there’s a call to answer 🤦‍♀️

FallOfTheHouseOfUtterlyButterly · 31/01/2025 17:03

He spoke to his wife
If OP chose to listen in, that's on her.

And, like I say, men do say shit to each other all the time. If anything he'd have been MORE aggressive. "Oi mate! Watch where you're fucking going."

Tell em how can one not listen in to something that is said right next to them

Men

IME don’t pick on men bigger than them, ever. Only women

You may not have heard but smartphones tell you who’s calling on the screen.

Also some people (me) keep their phones on silent

I have heard, thanks.
Maybe turn the ringer on next time you find yourself expecting an urgent call and need to manoeuvre yourself and a buggy out of a tight space?
Nobody needs to keep their phone on silent in all situations.

No. I like my phone on silent. Maybe next time don’t get upset about other people not doing things 100% to the letter on how you would.

Nobody needs to keep their phone on silent but I want to. Bit weird to be wound up about it TBH.

Why are people acting like OP killed a kitten? She looked at her phone. There’s a weird snobbery at people looking at their phones on MN which is ironic considering you’re presumably not using a potato to access MN

But that’s not really relevant to OP is it. OP bumped into someone, hardly the same as crashing a bike into them

Of course it’s relevant, both are a lack of attention. I was the one on the bike, the phone zombie walked right into me. (Both going in same direction, I had rung my bell). OP was on her phone not looking where she was going, not fully paying attention. Cue impact.

Now you’re just being ridiculous.
Nobody walks down the street posting on MN.
And keep your phone on silent if you want to, just don’t be surprised if someone gets annoyed at you for causing an accident by mooching around in public “looking at it”.

Wait…If you were on the fast moving vehicle it needs to be you looking out for pedestrians. If you were going in the same direction presumably you knocked into the back of them? Why were you on the pavement crashing into a pedestrian?

Also bell ringing isn’t enough. I always wear my headphones, and also some people are hard of hearing. Nothing worse than a “well I rung my bell!” Cyclist. Do you think it’s ok for cars to crash into people as long as they beep their horn? Or should perhaps they be more careful

Again people on here might expect everyone in public to be 100% on alert of their surroundings by 100% of the times but this is the real world and I’m sure even the pearl clutchers have got distracted in public now and again. I think you of all people should take note if you can’t cycle carefully

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 31/01/2025 19:16

Why were you on your phone when looking after your daughter and trying to move out of a lift?

Edited

NO ONE does? Have you surveyed all of MN??

causing an accident 😂😂😂 what a drama llama you are. She knocked into somebody. People have been knocking into each other since caveman days. Absolute lunacy to get so upset about it

I wouldn’t be annoyed if someone was pissed off that I caused them 0.2 seconds of mild inconvenience a man would certainly be getting told if he was such a big baby that he called me stupid about it.

fairycakes1234 · 31/01/2025 19:20

I'd be thinking in my head stupid woman but I wouldn't have said it out loud😊

ElatedShark · 31/01/2025 19:22

Threads not going the way OP wanted, she'll be back with an excuse as to why she must be glued to her phone 😂

Not really, people shit themselves and demanded to know why OP had a phone in her hand and she told them.
Again maybe I’m just more of the chilled out variety of human but the level of upset waged at a mum on a phone is hysterical. Some of you need therapy pronto

PeppyGreenFinch · 31/01/2025 19:33

You had apologised so there was no need for him to announce you were stupid.

How did he react when you called him stupid and rude?

Well done for saying something back, too many women post saying they were too shocked to respond.
