A man called me stupid in front of my daughter

As I was exiting the lift with my two-year-old in the pram, another pram went out ahead of us. Since I was backing out, I didn’t realize they were still near the elevator entrance, and I accidentally bumped into the woman with the other pram. I was looking at my phone while maneuvering, but I immediately apologized. However, her husband deliberately said, "She’s on her phone, she’s stupid." My little girl heard it and repeated, "Mum, are you stupid." I was absolutely fuming and really wanted to retaliate. I was so angry and told him that I already apologized and I think you're stupid and rude. I know I should have just ignored it but it really made me so angry.

I really felt awful after I utter those words. It's a lesson learnt for me. I was just so taken aback after hearing that when we are just literally next to each other. But yes I am learning from this experience and thank you for the advice.

Honestly OP you showed your DD you don’t take unwarranted nasty insults. It’s a valuable lesson bags good for girls to learn you did nothing wrong - and who cares if you bumped into someone. Big whoop. It happens all the time, random men having little tantrums about it (when it didn’t even happen to them) are the ones being shit parents

PeppyGreenFinch · 31/01/2025 22:38

OP, you were absolutely fine. It’s good you’re teaching your daughter that women should stand up for yourself.

Don’t be taken in by some of the responses here, there are a lot of people posting in bad faith here who will always tell a woman she is in the wrong for standing up for herself.

And for some reason people having phones in their hand really triggers some players to have like absolute vermin. Ignore the hate, half these people haven’t even read your OP properly

JandamiHash · 31/01/2025 22:42

Springsunshine28 · 31/01/2025 22:39

I am very much aware that I was in the wrong here. And I really learned from this experience. I was overtaken by my emotions at the heat of the moment and really should have handled it differently. But I still feel like he could have said it in a nicer way than just point blank "she's stupid". When he is literally right next to me and straight after I apologized.

You apologised, there’s nothing more you could do. He was a total tit for having a hissy fit about it.

Id step away from the thread now OP people are going really low after you simply knocked your back into another person’s back.

I mean sometimes the truth hurts. Next time don't look at your phone.

Truth hurts? WTF?
You think it's ok for a complete stranger to talk to somebody like that? Your standards are low.

PeppyGreenFinch · 31/01/2025 22:45

namechangetheworld · 31/01/2025 22:32

Thanks for confirming OP. Still not convinced you were in the right I'm afraid, but I appreciate the clarity.

Here’s your cue to apologise to the OP for accusing her of lying about expecting a GP call. I’ll wait…

nodramaplz · 31/01/2025 22:14

I'd be irritated if someone nudged me with a pram cause they were on a phone!

Hi just to be clear, I was backing out from the lift
So my back touched his wife not my pram bumping unto them.

Do you think it's OK to bash into someone with your pram because you were looking on your phone?

PeppyGreenFinch · 31/01/2025 22:36

Yep, this man had no reason to call OP stupid.

I'm talking about posters here but you already knew that.

Strange world where people are more offended by women standing up for other women than men who abuse women for no reason. But hey, you do you.

He could be somewhere else talking about it you will never know. It’s just odd that you are aggrieved that OP made a MN post. Why shouldn’t she?

Also it’s not hypocritical - he started the insult. So OP had two options - stand up for herself or say nothing. I’d certainly say something if anyone called me stupid in public, warranted or not. Never a need for adults to resort to petty insults.

Now that you (finally) know OP didn’t ram the woman’s legs with her ‘heavy pram’ do you feel differently? It was one back bumping into another. Has this never happened to you?

I haven't once said I'm 'aggrieved' by the OP making a Mumsnet post. I've just said several times now the post clearly didn't go the way she (and you) wanted it to.

If you don't think it's hypocritical that OP got upset about someone referring to her her stupid in front of her child only to immedietely call them stupid back, in front of that same child, I don't know what to tell you.

The fact it was her body instead of a pram makes little difference. OP should have glanced up from her phone for the 15 seconds it took to exit the lift, then none of this would have happened.

I’m surprised you say it makes little difference when you’ve been wanging on for pages about how painful it is to be hit by a pram and no wonder the husband was upset, yet a back to back bump isn’t nearly the same level of pain. Also given she was reversing this could have happened without a phone. Something like this happens all the time and is barely worth an acknowledgement let alone an insult.

Wait…If you were on the fast moving vehicle it needs to be you looking out for pedestrians. If you were going in the same direction presumably you knocked into the back of them? Why were you on the pavement crashing into a pedestrian?

Also bell ringing isn’t enough. I always wear my headphones, and also some people are hard of hearing. Nothing worse than a “well I rung my bell!” Cyclist. Do you think it’s ok for cars to crash into people as long as they beep their horn? Or should perhaps they be more careful

Again people on here might expect everyone in public to be 100% on alert of their surroundings by 100% of the times but this is the real world and I’m sure even the pearl clutchers have got distracted in public now and again. I think you of all people should take note if you can’t cycle carefully

Shared path, pedestrian stopped dead in front of me then backed up. So yes, she got my front wheel up her jacksie. She was on the cyclist side of of the well signed shared path. Oblivious to everything around her. I was only going slow, in fact that’s why I fell off, not enough forward motion to go forwards. But of course cyclists are like dog owners, always to blame.

If she hadn't been staring at her phone she could have actually turned her head a little to look behind her. Can't say I ever backed my pram up without bothering to have a glance back first.

Yeah as the faster moving person it’s still on you to be aware of your surroundings and not go so fast you can’t stop in time. People stop dead in the street for all manners of reason. You just have been either very close or very fast to have hit her. I say this as someone who cycles frequently and has never hit or come close to hitting a pedestrian

And yes you are to blame. Stay in the cycle part and watch your speed and be aware of pedestrians. And yes dog owners are to blame most of the time too
