To be really glad I don't live in America right now

AnonymousBleep · 31/01/2025 09:57

I really feel for ordinary Americans. It's bad enough on this side of the Channel, hearing daily about Trump's latest petty, spiteful, idiotic bullshit - that rant against the Bishop who asked him to have mercy on immigrants, the ridiculous and insulting attempt to blame 'diversity' for the plane crash - but living under it must be so much worse. And heaven help you if you're LGBT or a woman. Or an immigrant. Or not white. Or poor. Or anyone else Trump and his freakshow of a government despises. I moan about the UK all the time, like everyone else who lives here, because god knows it's far from perfect, but at least we don't have a government in charge who is trying to strip huge swathes of the population of their rights and citizenship.

Yes, it can.

Were you around in the 70s?

You're one of those. Union strikes, power cuts, bankruptcy, three day week, mods versus the punks. That heat wave in 75. Yes, I see what you're getting at.

I'm sure that they appreciate your pity.

The ordinary Americans voted, he seems to be doing what he promised. Whether you agree or not with the policies, a politician quickly doing what they said they will do is a breath of fresh air. I wish that our politicians were more like that.

This . It's really refreshing to see a politician doing what he said he would and quickly . We got fed a pack of lies and have an incompetent inexperienced bunch running us into the ground .

100% agree with you @AnonymousBleep

I wouldn't live in America if you paid me! Shock So many reasons to not live there. Unless you're rich/wealthy/very solvent, how can anyone bear to live there? Only way to survive would be to be part of one of the huge religious organisations. 😬

No thank you, I will stay in my lovely country ta muchly (UK!) People can slate and bash and berate it as much as they like, but I will never live anywhere else!

Funnily enough, you do see some UK bashing on here, (from people who live in the UK,) but these people never leave do they? Funny that! Wink

I have friends in the US. They are not rich, they are totally normal people with normal jobs and normal lives. Nor are they part of one of the huge religious organisations. However, they all seem perfectly happy and content (we don't discuss politics), and I don't hear the constant moaning about how shit their country is which I often see on MN from UK dwellers.

I don't live in either the US or the UK, and have no wish to live in either, but if I had to choose one I don't think it would be the UK.

Youngheartsalittletogetherness · 01/02/2025 06:16

At least in the UK children aren't shot on a daily basis, abortion is for the woman to decide,we don't have musky rat in parliament.
The UK obviously has issues but it's not the basket case some would have us believe.

Are there loads of people who are desperate to go there?

10 million border encounters - that is people trying to cross the Southern border illegally, during Biden’s administration. Around 8 million made it over, so yes, loads.

Aren't they fleeing poverty and gangs?

I don’t know the individual reasons for every illegal border crossing, I’m just responding to a question asking if “loads” of people want to get into the US.

If they're crossing from Mexico and other Latino countries, they're fleeing abject poverty, corrupt governments and cartels. They go to the US to work in the black market.

They’re being smuggled over by cartels who are making millions from it, with rape, sex trafficking and drug smuggling endemic. Do you know about that? That is why there needs to be controls on that border. It is a literal industry for criminal gangs down there.

Really? 8 million people have been trafficked into the US?

SallyWD · 01/02/2025 06:56

I agree with you 100% but sadly millions of Americans think he's great. I do know many who are appalled by him too.

Bad Faith Response. Typical 🙄

Perhaps it’s only a couple of million, so I guess that’s ok…

I’m not a fan but have family in the US and they’re all perfectly happy. I don’t think they need pity from anyone. As I said, I’m not a fan but he has millions of supporters 🤷🏿‍♀️

Everyone I know, American or immigrant, is despairing.

Oh this one. Right. It’s almost word for word every time I see it. Some people are trafficked so nobody should be allowed to come. What about the people there that are terrified of the cartels and leaving because of them?

You're not making any sense. First you have no idea why people are illegally entering the US, now you're saying they're all trafficked.

People illegally enter the US to work and have a better life. Those coming over the border from Mexico and other Latino countries, are fleeing endemic corruption, cartels, poverty and violence.

They should apply to enter legally. Do you believe in fully open borders for all countries then?

WaterL1ne · 01/02/2025 07:05

I have always loved the US for many reasons, got married there and have family there , visited countless times.

At the current time though I am grateful we didn’t end up there. Guns and health system aside which are big issues on their own the current situation is truly scary. Anti diversity, anti women, anti rest of the world, anti saving the planet( whilst it burns), out of WHO….. it spreads and you know what it isn’t the the rich white man that suffers it’s everybody else.

I’ve just watched the clip of the Fox news presenter scorning the LA fire dep managemrnt saying “ I hope they know what they’re doing”. It was a picture of 3 women, highly qualified and experienced. One being part of the LGBT community. Clearly being a woman and gay is not ok to some and ignorance spreads like a disease when whipped up by bullies like those currently sitting in the White House as the world has seen before.

At the moment if I was in the US I’d worry if I was disabled or had a child with a disability. I’d worry about having sitting duck children in schools, I’d worry about living in environmentally fragile areas, I’d worry if I was a woman or black, I’d worry if I wasn’t 100% sure myself and my family would always be healthy and the potential for health bankruptcy wasn’t there, I’d worry about how the next pandemic would pan out…..the list is endless.

So no even though America really is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, has amazing people in it and is a country I adore no I wouldn’t want to live there at the moment and I wouldn’t give you a thankyou for a green card if it dropped in my lap.

Can you please quote where I said they were “all trafficked”? Any thoughts on the cartels they’re fleeing from actually being responsible for them being smuggled across on an industrial scale? Or the free flow of Fentanyl through the border?

Why are you finding my responses so difficult to understand?

Do you believe in fully open borders for all countries? So no borders anywhere?

Lightswitchup · 01/02/2025 07:10

It really turned my stomach when he started to wiffle on about diversity policies when all those people have died. So disrespectful and shows his inherent weakness of character.

You do realise that Trump has just given women their rights back by defining women in law as a biological reality. He's saved women's sports by banning men including those who id as transwomen, same with prisons where 15% of women prisoners are male and he's banned state funded child medical transition including irreversible surgery. Please can you tell me how he's removed our bodily autonomy?

Well, he's taken the right to abortion and flung it against a wall.

The US is always a very terrible, horrible, no good place to be according to most MNers. The vast majority here know nothing about it, but there a few experts who spent a week at Disney once.

I'm American, and the US that I read about on here shows no resemblance to the real US. But MNers don't want to hear that.

I feel your pain. The MNers who think the US is a terrible place to live also think the same about much of the rest of the world. Apparently they live in paradise and feel sorry for the rest of us in our no good countries, where nothing is as great as it is in the UK.

Again you seem confused. I was responding to a question about why people are going to the US if it's so bad. Unfortunately for many, their life at home is worse and they would rather risk a precarious existence in the US than stay at home.

Do I believe in open borders? No. Open borders would be chaotic and destabilise countries.

What's going on in the US is more complex than you're making out. For example, their drug problem was created by their pharmaceutical industry.

I said that people are fleeing bad conditions in their home countries and you started talking about people trafficking. Trafficked people are different to illegal immigrants coming to the US to work.

Well, he's taken the right to abortion and flung it against a wall.

Trump has clearly stated that he will NOT be signing any abortion ban. He is leaving it to the states. 37 states are ok with abortion. 13 only allow abortion in extreme circumstances. Each state has decided for itself. He will not overturn the states decisions, either way.

@username299 I don’t seem confused at all. You’re saying that because you don’t like what I am saying, so you’re trying to pretend there’s something odd or strange about it. MNetters love doing this 😁

So open borders are chaotic and we need them to be closed but in response to my factual reply to a question about whether loads of people actually want to come to the US, in which I made no judgment at all, you start ranting about people fleeing gangs and crime. So in this instance open borders are fine? And there’s something wrong with me for pointing out the huge opportunities for criminality on the open US Southern border? This is “confusing” to you? 🤔

Go and have a coffee and wake up a bit, I’m going to walk my dog 😉
