This is mine,£285 and I wouldn't say it has been particularly cosy warm.

We set the thermo to 15 at night and up to 17 in the afternoon to take the chill off and get the radiators warmer.

This is for a 1930 three bed semi.

It isnt going to get better is it?

@BMW6 - unfortunately not! We were staying with family for most of Dec so it was lower but this is monthly. I live in Scotland, but in the central belt so not remote. Normally 200-300pm

I'm horrified 😦

Youagain2025 · 29/01/2025 19:03

Mine was 205. 5 bed town house. Not even had my heating on at all 😭

Bignanna · 29/01/2025 17:10

That’s pretty good- who are you with?

British Gas. I think being in a terrace must make a world of difference.

Our thermostat is set at 19° 7am to 11pm every day then down to 18 or 17 overnight.

We're in Southampton so about as far south as you can get as well.

BurntBroccoli · 29/01/2025 19:07

Electric only was £85 last month not had this month's yet. Use tumble drier sparingly for an hour each wash then finish off on airer. Also use air fryer not oven which saves loads. Heated blankets on bed and downstairs to save a bit of heating oil.
Heating never on overnight and on a timer about 6 hours a day when it's really cold.
Good insulation in loft so house is quite warm though the kitchen gets pretty cold as it's an extension.

Oil costs around £800 a year.
Small 3 bed semi. E Yorks.

LeafofLorien · 29/01/2025 19:10

Tiny 2 bed cottage and we're coming in at approx £400 but we are electric only (no mains gas in village) and charge an electric vehicle. The house is poorly insualted. We're getting an air source heat pump and solar panels this week on the ECO4 Government Grant and I can't wait cos these bills are awful and the house barely reaches 14/15 degrees.

LegoTherapy · 29/01/2025 19:14

£195 gas and electricity for January. Four bedroom townhouse with crap drafty windows and doors and radiators they have broken thermostats. The heating isn't on overnight. I've never understood the need for that at all. The dishwasher is on daily. Washing machine most days and the drier when I have no choice.

Arlanymor · 29/01/2025 19:14

Wow some of these are eye watering - so sorry to read some stories. Mine has just come through - I was £45 in credit and they want another £36 - so circa £90 for the month. Meant to say two bed flat in Swansea - I’m right by the sea so it can be chilly but I’m fairly tolerant of cold and don’t have the heating on a timer but turn it on manually when I need it.

Slurper · 29/01/2025 19:15

£245 this month and £240 December.

Just read water bills going up 32% too over next 5 years. (United Utilities)

Dreading the council tax bill landing.

I worked out yesterday we have spent £1100 on food this month including wine and the odd treat like McDonald’s. I couldn’t believe it.

dollybird · 29/01/2025 19:18

£260. We don't have the heating on at night and 18 during the day when needed. We don't sit in the cold trying not to turn it on. This was less than the same period last year. Our monthly DD is £156.

Should have said 5 bed detached house built in 2000. We don't have a tumble drier.

stargazer02 · 29/01/2025 19:25

£350 gas for early dec-mid January (about 5.5 weeks) and £150 is typical for electric - don't have bill yet as it's not by calender month.
Larger than average house that's not a naturally warm place, and a disabled person in the house who is quite sedentary so needs heating up a bit. Set to between 18 and 21 between 6am and 8pm depending on the room. 17 overnight except under floor heating rooms which is always set to 19.
Aware it's an absolute privilege to be able to afford it and we do sacrifice other things to be able to do it.

T4phage · 29/01/2025 19:26

£102, but we don't use the central heating or have a tumble dryer.

FloppySarnie · 29/01/2025 19:29

£470 for a 4 bed 1930s semi.

Teenagerantruns · 29/01/2025 19:34

£130 for a 2 bedroom flat, we have had the heating on alot, we now only £2.45 in credit but we will make it up in summer. We pay £82a month

AlmosttimeforChristmas · 29/01/2025 19:36

PonkyPonky · 29/01/2025 18:27

£198 total. House was built in 1901 so it’s not a warm house. We only have the heating on for an hour in the morning then 3-7 in the evening. I’m really surprised people sleep with the heating on, it really dries my nose and mouth out and I get so hot once under the duvet even though the house gets down to about 13 degrees overnight.

Me too! I can’t bear the heating on while I’m sleeping. Feel so hot and thirsty. Probably gets down to about 13-14 degrees on a cold night.

Myeyeswideshut · 29/01/2025 19:37

3 bed semi. Turn heating off all day while at work.

Had a smart meter installed 9 days ago and in that time have apparently used £130 worth of gas. Seems crazy!

LegoTherapy · 29/01/2025 19:38

Some of these are eye-watering! My boiler is over 20 years old and we have rubbish double glazing where the curtains move when it's windy and games blow down the extractor fans. Are all these homes with huge bills like saunas?

No it's so cold we are sitting on heated blankets in the living room! We use the tumble drier a lot though, probably too much and I reckon that is a large part of it. Could definitely shave some off that bill.

AffIt · 29/01/2025 19:42

Roughly about £100 a month in electric - 5-bed Victorian villa in the rural west of Scotland.

Heating is oil-fired - about £1100 to fill the tank in August and we're not even halfway through. I am quite mean with the heating, though.

fitflopqueen · 29/01/2025 19:43

£168 for the electric only, that does include heating for an annex office and January was cold to start with so that has remained on low.
Use oil for cooking/water/central heating - last bill was £1200 and that should last about 8-9 months.

Log burner too but currently running out of seasoned logs and will manage without until next lot cut are good to burn at end of year.

Astrak · 29/01/2025 19:43

I live on a 52ft old iron barge. I'm retired and in winter live in the tiny aft cabin. I spend about £10 per week on electricity running the little oil filled radiator for a maximum of four hours in 24. I put on lots of warm clothing and use hot water bottles if it's particularly cold.

SolemnlySwear2010 · 29/01/2025 19:44

3 bed semi detached and about £260 for both (£110 electric, £150 gas). Heating on at 20c most of the day and turned down to around 16 at night. I wfh so constantly have computer / tv / radio on and washing machine/ dishwasher used daily. Tumble dryer also used at least a few times per week

TheFunHare · 29/01/2025 19:46

Ours was £132 electric and £238 gas 😣 We have a 4 bed detached and an EV. Pay £250 a month which averages out about right over the year. Thermostat set to 17 and heating comes on twice a day. I work from home and it gets freezing during the day. Don't want to think too hard about it really.

RainbowSlidders · 29/01/2025 19:49

4 bed semi townhouse built in 2015. Thermostat set at 22 degrees 24/7, tumble drier and dishwasher used used daily. Boiler was replaced in September so is very energy efficient.

rainythursdayontheavenue · 29/01/2025 19:55

80s build 4 bed detached - have got cavity wall insulation, triple glazed windows, and ultra thick loft insulation.
Bulk LPG is £250 per month on d/debit - spread over 12 months.

Electricity was £180 this month.
Total = £430.

Heating on between 4pm and 10pm every week day, and 10am to 10pm at weekends. Thermostat never goes above 20c.
