To name my puppy this?

Hi all, I’m a frequent reader of mumsnet but I’ve never posted before! I am wanting some advice as I cannot settle on a name for my female puppy who I am due to collect at end of February.

The current contenders are all Elven names and we both like more than others but as it doesn’t appear to be common at all I just want to check how it sounds to other people.

The names are Disa, Olna, Frena or Faelywn - the latter being our favourite right now.

what do people think?

What sort of puppy?

TotallyFloored · 28/01/2025 20:31

It’s a dog not a baby - call it what you like.

it’s not like when you have a child and you have to consider what it would be like growing up with the name - the dog won’t get embarrassed by at even care about your choice.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Ruby

I think it's going to be a pain in the arse to explain to everyone you meet and spell out all the time.

Fail-win?
Far-win?
Farl-win?

Obviously you can name your dog whatever you want.

Quietnowplease · 28/01/2025 20:32

Farly-win?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 28/01/2025 20:32

They all sound fine names for dogs. You can call a dog pretty much anything and it sounds ok. Go with what you like.

Mikiamo · 28/01/2025 20:33

How on earth are you pronouncing that last one? It looks like it's trying to be Welsh but failing miserably.

Mumtoocavvies · 28/01/2025 20:34

It’s pronounced Fae-Lywn and we always consider dogs names as either 4 letters or two syllables as it is easier for recall training.

our other dog has a name which is 4 letters and two syllables, our other favourite is Disa

How can we possibly advise without a photo?😀

Anewuser · 28/01/2025 20:35

Your puppy, your choice.

Other dogs won’t take the mickey.

I have no idea how to pronounce them so unable to give a favourite.

Enjoy your puppy.

Mikiamo · 28/01/2025 20:35

How are you saying Lywn? Like Loin?

SwingTheMonkey · 28/01/2025 20:35

It really doesn’t matter. The dog isn’t going to be embarrassed about its name.

AffIt · 28/01/2025 20:36

I was going to say that strong two-syllable names are best for training (I grew up with gun dogs, including spaniels!).

Personally, I'd go with Disa.

Arlanymor · 28/01/2025 20:36

If you’re thinking of the Silven elf it’s spelled Faelwen - no ‘y’ in it.

Mumtoocavvies · 28/01/2025 20:36

a picture of the puppy? We’ve not collected her yet and I’ve only got a group picture of the litter saved.

she’s very cute and small so I really like the elven names that sound whimsical and airy, if that makes sense as a description

No one will care what you name your puppy as long as it grows into a well behaved pet.

MJconfessions · 28/01/2025 20:37

It’s just a dog like you can name her anything. The standard is a lot lower for pets than humans.

Quietnowplease · 28/01/2025 20:37

Fa lee win?

Choose what you love op. I gave my dog a name I'd never give a child but it is easy to spell! Grin

TheHateIsNotGood · 28/01/2025 20:37

My ds named our dog after a Game of Thrones character, I often have to repeat it, spell it out, etc many years later. My only worry was that the GoT character survived to the end, thankfully she did.

Balloonhearts · 28/01/2025 20:37

Stand in the middle of a busy park and shout it. If you're not embarrassed and no one is offended it's fine.

Tipperttruck · 28/01/2025 20:38

I always think name with something they can hook onto is a good idea, a good c k sss or t sound. But you don't have to use the name for recall.

coxesorangepippin · 28/01/2025 20:38

Viggo?

RichPetunia · 28/01/2025 20:38

All are lovely names for your new dog 🐾

I get it about the syllables, but why would number of letters matter? There isn't any consistent pattern on how many letters make a syllable.

Maybe just think about how often friendly strangers admire dogs and ask their names and how it might get a bit old explaining / spelling all the time - perhaps go for one of the simpler ones?

comedycentral · 28/01/2025 20:40

She's not asking if the dog will be bothered or embarrassed by its name; she's just after some opinions about her choices. 🐕

I like the shorter names like Disa! There is also a dedicated dog board on here, OP, called The Doghouse; it might be useful for future pup advice.
