To name my puppy this?

Hi all, I’m a frequent reader of mumsnet but I’ve never posted before! I am wanting some advice as I cannot settle on a name for my female puppy who I am due to collect at end of February.

The current contenders are all Elven names and we both like more than others but as it doesn’t appear to be common at all I just want to check how it sounds to other people.

The names are Disa, Olna, Frena or Faelywn - the latter being our favourite right now.

what do people think?

Does Disa rhyme with Lisa? I think it’s fab!

However I just had a thought; people might mishear it as Deefur, which I love for a dog 😂 but which doesn’t quite fit your brief!

Mumtoocavvies · 28/01/2025 21:12

Fae-lywn so it is pronounced fae like Faye and then lywn like lynn so fae-lywn

it looks like Frena or Olna are stronger, what is people’s opinion on Vixe?

I like Disa the best out of those choices, it's lovely

Vixe vapour rub.

Disa is good if it rhymes with Lisa.

Or just Fae?

ALunchbox · 28/01/2025 21:15

Bit of a dramatic title. I thought you were going to call it Hitler or something.

Anewuser · 28/01/2025 20:35

Your puppy, your choice.

Other dogs won’t take the mickey.

I have no idea how to pronounce them so unable to give a favourite.

Enjoy your puppy.

My dog would take the mickey of another dog, he's a nob

Priddy · 28/01/2025 21:16

Disa's the best. My friend the vet has some funny tales of the pretentious names she's faced with. I think she'd count Faelwyn among them.

HectorPlasm · 28/01/2025 21:17

Sounds like 'failing' - it's a no from this jury - sorry

Googling 'female elf names' gives loads - Althea is nice!

Zippidydoodah · 28/01/2025 21:18

Fae lywn sounds like “failing”. Just occurred to me.

olna is a good name for a dog, too. Easy to spell and pronounce (and yell out in the middle of a park).

Mumtoocavvies · 28/01/2025 21:18

I wouldn’t name my puppy anything like Hitler or anything offensive, I’ve always grown up with dogs but just want to name her something wonderful and unique

It may sound funny but it’s my first time choosing a name because my other half chose our children’s names and our other dog’s name came from his favourite Disney film.

I obviously love our children’s names but I didn’t pick them and this time I am picking out the name and I am stressing

The only thing to worry about is that you have to shout it in public

AmyDudley · 28/01/2025 21:19

Nellas
Amarië
Indissinple
Luthien
Elenwë
Tauriel
Elwing

Rather than aname that caters to your own fanciful whims, pick something that is easy for the dog to learn, with a distinct sound on the end that can be picked up at a distance. Make life easier for your dog and do what is best for her.
Generally names like Bobby or Winnie or a simple single syllable name are easier for dogs to learn than e.g Herrferrnaelwis

Mumtoocavvies · 28/01/2025 21:20

I will look at a list of further names which we could potentially use, I wanted to avoid using the really popular Tolkien elven names like Arwen for example

+1 for Disa, it's a lovely name.

I read somewhere that dogs respond better / more quickly to hard consonants, so it works better than the others for that reason too.

HollyKnight · 28/01/2025 21:21

You'll forever be repeating yourself. If I saw it I would probably think it was Welsh!

My dog has a unisex name, but for some reason the majority of people think she is a male. I always feel a bit awkward at the vets when they're saying "He a lovely boy. His bloods were fine. He'll be glad to get home now. You were a good boy today." 😬

Babadookinthewardrobe · 28/01/2025 21:22

The important thing is how easy is it to work into a number of songs and ditties about what a good girl she is.

Mumtoocavvies · 28/01/2025 21:22

If it helps our other dog is called Kida from Atlantis, she’s not named the full length version of the Atlantis princesses name as we cannot pronounce it

I’m still not clear on the pronunciation. How is lwyn like lynn?what is the w for? And if it is like lynn the dog is called Fail- Lynn. Failin’.

Rowgtfc72 · 28/01/2025 21:22

Whatever you call your pup, you'll shorten it or it will become a nickname😁
We have a Diesel- who is diesydoo.
Previous dogs were Stella- stellydellydoodahday.
And Holsten- ostyoof.

I'd go with Faelwyn.

squirrelinajar · 28/01/2025 21:23

Mrsttcno1 · 28/01/2025 20:57

This is exactly what I was going to say🤣

Yeah, I was an au pair once and had to call for Fanny, in the park. I’m from the country where the name originates from, but just no.

Mumtoocavvies · 28/01/2025 21:24

The elven spelling is Faelywn is either like that or Faelwen and I guess shouting it out would sound like fail-lynn

OP posts:
borntobequiet · 28/01/2025 21:24

I thought you were going to say that you planned to call your puppy the name your sister had chosen for her expected baby. Or something.

WiddlinDiddlin · 28/01/2025 21:24

As long as its easy to shout clearly at a distance, doesn't sound like an every day word particularly one used as a cue in training, and isn't something horribly derogatory* or designed to intimidate or be offensive to the general public... have at it, call her whatever you like.

*I have worked with a LOT of dogs over the years and I have to say in every case where the dog has a derogatory name (and there have sadly been a few, one I can actually write here was called 'Fucker' and several had names that would auto-hide my post!), the dog is treated badly, needs not met, feelings not considered... ugh.

I caution people with big breeds not to name their dog something like 'Killer' or 'Psycho' or 'Ripper' etc too.

Anyway, small cutesy dog, nice choice of names, I like Disa better, my dogs are named for a small bitey predatory mammal, a hobbit, and a dragon.

Apollo365 · 28/01/2025 21:25

Another vote for Disa 😍
easiest to shout in the park

daliesque · 28/01/2025 21:27

Fae-lywn so it is pronounced fae like Faye and then lywn like lynn so fae-lywn

It's very cute, but sounds too much like the word failing - which isn't great for a puppy!
