To name my puppy this?

Hi all, I’m a frequent reader of mumsnet but I’ve never posted before! I am wanting some advice as I cannot settle on a name for my female puppy who I am due to collect at end of February.

The current contenders are all Elven names and we both like more than others but as it doesn’t appear to be common at all I just want to check how it sounds to other people.

The names are Disa, Olna, Frena or Faelywn - the latter being our favourite right now.

what do people think?

Definitely sounds like Faelywn is not the way to go.. I imagine it would be Faelwen.. I liked it is as the meaning is Enchanted Friend.

Olna means Beauty and Fair
Frena means joyful or happy

Disa is from the rings of power and her name doesn’t appear to have a specific meaning

what do people think?

I don't think the dog will care what it's called Grin

Just make sure it's a name you're happy to yell down the beach, lol. DH refused to let me name our beagle Bagel because he was too embarrassed Hmm

My ds named our dog after a Game of Thrones character, I often have to repeat it, spell it out, etc many years later. My only worry was that the GoT character survived to the end, thankfully she did.

Are you Jeremy Clarkson?? 😂

I don’t know how to pronounce the last name but I guess Fae would make a cute nickname. Disa sounds too much like Diesel to me, which conjures up a completely different type of dog!

TheHateIsNotGood · 28/01/2025 20:44

@Balloonhearts as I've joked with a sheepfarmer you can't call her Diane (or Dai as we're at it).

Mumtoocavvies · 28/01/2025 20:44

Yes you’ve got a point about Disa sounding like Diesel which may make people think we are calling Disa as a shorter version..

the other name is not elven and it was what we settled on originally but the kids didn’t like it and that name is Vixe

This comes from the female fox in the Disney film “The fox and and the hound” and this was our reasoning as our other female is from a Disney film too

with both my cats I've waited a week or so to get to know them and their personalities before deciding on a name.
Current cat has selective hearing regarding her name - but I only have to whisper "treats" or "Dreamies" and she is there like a shot.

Would love a photo when she arrives home though!

Cherrysoup · 28/01/2025 20:47

On our 5th and 6th, always used one syllable names for ease of recall. Call her what you like, half the fun is people asking what the name is and chatting to other dog walkers so you can socialise the puppy.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 28/01/2025 20:51

You need one that ends in a vowel - much easier to draw out when you are calling them back.

UnderTheStairs51 · 28/01/2025 20:53

I agree with shouting it. Some sounds just make you feel silly when yelled

Even if a name is perfectly nice, you might hate it when you are really using your lungs.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 28/01/2025 20:54

Frena is lovely.

Polkadotbabushka · 28/01/2025 20:56

They all sound hard to say!

Mrsttcno1 · 28/01/2025 20:57

Balloonhearts · 28/01/2025 20:37

Stand in the middle of a busy park and shout it. If you're not embarrassed and no one is offended it's fine.

This is exactly what I was going to say🤣

Pelot · 28/01/2025 20:58

Those names with be a pain in the arse at the vets. You'll be forever spelling it every time you call. If that doesn't bother you then all fine.

DaftyLass · 28/01/2025 21:00

As long as no one else has to call your dog, it really is what ever you would like

ItsyourSam · 28/01/2025 21:00

Nellas
Amarië
Indis
Luthien
Elenwë
Tauriel
Elwing

I love Tolkien!

Mumtoocavvies · 28/01/2025 21:01

Our other female does need spelling but it does always open up to people asking where we thought of her name from.

I enjoy explaining and I like having names which don’t sound common at all, does Vixe sound nice for a ruby red dog?

BotterMon · 28/01/2025 21:01

The breeder will probably give her a name with their own prefix/suffix so you don't need a name until she arrives. As others have said you may find she's nothing like your chosen name.

None of the names you propose float my boat but then I quite like human names for dogs.

Why have you posted in AIBU? The Doghouse would give you better feedback

Mumtoocavvies · 28/01/2025 21:02

I love Tolkien and elven names and my other half plays games which involve a lot of those types of names so we both like the sound of it but it is finding one which sounds delicate and feminine for a cavalier

Arran2024 · 28/01/2025 21:04

The pup won't mind and you are unlikely to meet others with the same name - my dog rec is full of dogs called Luna, Bella, Bailey. Yours will be unique. I did know a beagle called Osquian once - that's probably not how you spell it. It meant "golden ears".

Mumtoocavvies · 28/01/2025 21:04

@BotterMon I have a dog from a breeder so I am aware that I cannot select her KC name however this is just her pet name.

The breeder has asked us for a name but she keeps calling her a name she has selected and I don’t want the puppy to pick this up and answer to it before we collect her so I’d rather the breeder be able to be given a name that she can start to call her

TomatoSandwiches · 28/01/2025 21:05

Elva?

admirible · 28/01/2025 21:05

It’s a dog, you want something you can call easily to get it to come back to you. Something ending in a oooooooo or eeeeeeee sound.

AubernFable · 28/01/2025 21:07

Honestly nothing to add, name your dog whatever you like- mine have very, very extra names like two little girls and it always gives the vets a good giggle. Think ‘Meredith Veronica Lastname’ & ‘Cordelia Marie Lastname’ but they always take it very (unnecessarily) seriously for us and it’s cute.

I don't know how to pronounce any of them, but as dogs are general6 introduced verbally and not it writing it doesn't really matter!
I'd go for a name you can easily call without feeling like a knob.
The middle 2 look better to me, the N I'm the second syllable makes it a stronger name to call, if the last one is said fail-win? I'd just end up calling it win win/winning!

Kate1234567 · 28/01/2025 21:09

Is it pronounced Fail Win?

It sounds pretty but might be a pain to spell out every time you book a vet appointment? Also if you’re shouting “fail win” across the park it might sound funny.
