To name my puppy this?

Hi all, I’m a frequent reader of mumsnet but I’ve never posted before! I am wanting some advice as I cannot settle on a name for my female puppy who I am due to collect at end of February.

The current contenders are all Elven names and we both like more than others but as it doesn’t appear to be common at all I just want to check how it sounds to other people.

The names are Disa, Olna, Frena or Faelywn - the latter being our favourite right now.

what do people think?

I thought you were going to say that you planned to call your puppy the name your sister had chosen for her expected baby. Or something.

My neighbour had this problem, she called her dog the same name as our other neighbour's baby without realising.

daliesque · 28/01/2025 21:30

Another vote for Olna here!

All more interesting than mine, I've had a George, Henry, Charlie, Malin, Gemma and Holly.

Yes, I've had a lot of dogs. Current one is Arthur.

banivani · 28/01/2025 21:32

Disa is great and there's a good story connected to the name too.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 28/01/2025 21:33

Frena and Faelywn have quite a Celtic sound so would be very appropriate names for an Irish Wolfhound or a Scottish Deerhound, but I think Olna or Vixe are better for a tiny dog like a Cavalier.

I always think name with something they can hook onto is a good idea, a good c k sss or t sound. But you don't have to use the name for recall.

Absolutely this. Animals like a distinct sound to their name so they recognise it. We have a goat called Pedra and she responds to her name but we tried any name with a hard P and she responded. Same with Caprie and Titan. It's the distinct one hard letter they latch onto.

CrowleyKitten · 28/01/2025 21:34

Olna makes me think of the arm bone, and Frena makes me think of Frenulum.

I do really like Faelywn, though. it's pretty.

sugarandfudge · 28/01/2025 21:34

I have a dog named Frodo. When my grandfather (who was not a fan of fantasy literature or film) first heard it, he thought we'd named him 'Frogo' or something about frogs. 😄

Anyway, if your family likes the name and it will be easy for your puppy to hear and recognise, I'd use it. An unusual name might be a bit more difficult to get across to people, but how often do you have to introduce your dog to new people? For us, it's rare.

Remona · 28/01/2025 21:35

Go for it if you like it, it’s a pretty name, but you will undoubtedly end up calling her Fae. I think that’s a lovely name though.

You always end up shortening them and it’s easier for training. I’ve had a Poppy who became Pops, a Penny who became Pen etc.

Weyohweyoh · 28/01/2025 21:35

Just be sure to pick something you’re happy to bellow across the park while she chases squirrels and gleefully ignores you (like mine does 😆) .

Lochroy · 28/01/2025 21:36

Frena just makes me think frenulum.

I like Disa and don't hear Diesel, because to me, I read the s as a soft sss snake sound.

MissUltraViolet · 28/01/2025 21:37

Choose something that is short, quick and easy to shout out that the dog will easily learn to recognise.

You’ll end up calling her Fae most the time no doubt. Disa is nice too.

Enko · 28/01/2025 21:37

Kinda disappointed the name wasn't "This"

Pick a name you love op and use thst don't worry about what others think. Mine is called Conkers. I love him and his name.

No one will care what you name your puppy as long as it grows into a well behaved pet.

Exactly this.

My dog has a ludicrous name {Not going to give it} my son named her it, and it stuck.

However, it shortens well, and has alternatives, and is easy to call.

Time spent training is never wasted.

Arcticlife · 28/01/2025 21:41

I know a very gorgeous flat coat retriever called Disa (pronounced dee-sah). Go for it! Smile

ClareBlue · 28/01/2025 21:43

And you are obviously really looking forward to welcoming your new family member. The excitement isn't hidden in your posts. Enjoy the new addition.

Batshitkerazy · 28/01/2025 21:44

Missing the point of the post but KCK spaniels are the BEST 😍

L0bstersLass · 28/01/2025 21:47

No one is going to write your dog's name so it doesn't matter how it's spelt.
They'll just listen to what you say and copy you.

It's an unusual name but if you like it then go with it.

Stravaig · 28/01/2025 21:53

I think you're loading a lot of fanciful human meaning and expectation onto a single individual of another species!

My advice is to ask the first small child you meet for a name. They will suggest Red or Doggy or Floppy Ears or Smelly Poo or somesuch, which will hopefully bring you back to earth.

Remember to audition your new shortlist by calling them aloud repeatedly in public places :)

BackOfTheMum5net · 28/01/2025 21:53

Cute! Maybe see which works well when you’re yelling it across a park?!

FizzingAda · 28/01/2025 21:54

Just think what it will sound like when you call it in the park. Whatever it is the dog will be happy. If you like the name you will be happy. None of your choices sound stupid.
just don't call it Fenton.

As long as its easy to shout clearly at a distance, doesn't sound like an every day word particularly one used as a cue in training, and isn't something horribly derogatory* or designed to intimidate or be offensive to the general public... have at it, call her whatever you like.

*I have worked with a LOT of dogs over the years and I have to say in every case where the dog has a derogatory name (and there have sadly been a few, one I can actually write here was called 'Fucker' and several had names that would auto-hide my post!), the dog is treated badly, needs not met, feelings not considered... ugh.

I caution people with big breeds not to name their dog something like 'Killer' or 'Psycho' or 'Ripper' etc too.

Anyway, small cutesy dog, nice choice of names, I like Disa better, my dogs are named for a small bitey predatory mammal, a hobbit, and a dragon.

I too have heard thug type names lead to thug dogs- probably because training isn't done well 'Tyson' is one that comes to mind.

'Give a dog a bad name'..

But there are some very dog aggressive ''Millies'' about for some reason.
Labradors.

Fidelius · 28/01/2025 21:54

I was thinking you need a proper dog’s name you can shout into a wind, like Shep or Bess or Spot. But she’s a gorgeous King Charles Cavalier and deserves a whimsical, ethereal name.
Until, of course, you need to shout it into a wind, or across a field to recall.

ButFirstCovfefe · 28/01/2025 21:58

Mumtoocavvies · 28/01/2025 20:31

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Ruby

As a fellow Cavi owner…good luck! Theyre beautiful and glorious but also complete shits.

I’d go with a two syllable name you can shout. (I say that and you’ll think it’s because of recall or something but my boys were/are fab at that…not eating cat poo however….a two syllable name is what you want…

Desi is a really lovely name. ❤️

They all sound fine, and Faelwyn is pretty.

For a dog the only rules are (a) to make sure it is short and stacatto as a dog will not respond to a name that is hard for it to distinguish from other words, and (b) would you be comfortable yelling it at the top of your voice.

On both counts, you're good.

Post pics.

Salad666 · 28/01/2025 22:00

I love Faelywn! My puppy is called Freya but once we got recall down (kinda almost. We don't let her off leash unless in an enclosed space because I get too anxious but when I want her to come she listens. She doesn't listen to my DH though 😂) we started calling her nicknames, we have loads but have discovered today that she likes habibi! So random, not a word I've ever said and not something she hears but if she likes it what can I do, haha.

Good luck with your puppy when you get her, I hope you come back and post some photos 😊.
