To name my puppy this?

Hi all, I’m a frequent reader of mumsnet but I’ve never posted before! I am wanting some advice as I cannot settle on a name for my female puppy who I am due to collect at end of February.

The current contenders are all Elven names and we both like more than others but as it doesn’t appear to be common at all I just want to check how it sounds to other people.

The names are Disa, Olna, Frena or Faelywn - the latter being our favourite right now.

what do people think?

@BotterMon I have a dog from a breeder so I am aware that I cannot select her KC name however this is just her pet name.

The breeder has asked us for a name but she keeps calling her a name she has selected and I don’t want the puppy to pick this up and answer to it before we collect her so I’d rather the breeder be able to be given a name that she can start to call her

Why does it matter if she is already answering to one name when you pick her up?

My "left over from litter" puppy was responding to the name "puppy" at the breeders for quite a while. Brought her home and within a few days she was responding to her new name. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Dont get hung up on this.

Trying to convince the rest of the family that our next dog should be called Bill short for Bilbo. I have tried several elvish names but they are not very keen on any. So name your dog an elvish name and have fun!
I will continue to push for Bill, or possibly Keith. 🤔

Weird. If weird's ok then go for it.

My god, I'm exhausted after reading this thread 😁 I've read numerous explanations from OP regarding how the name beginning with F is pronounced - OP, does this not give you at least a bit of a hint that giving the dog that name is probably going to be more trouble than it's worth?! It really shouldn't be this difficult!

Lightswitchup · 29/01/2025 06:25

I like Olna the best. I think it’s clear and distinctive for the dog to learn too. Nori and Disa are nice but you may get the Diesel confusion.

SittingNextToIt · 29/01/2025 06:33

Dear heavens. As the very devoted keeper of a gorgeous pup I think this is insane.

The clue is that you want to explain - you want the attention of being asked ooooh what does that name mean and where is it from. You'd like that and hence all this poncing about.

It does not matter. It's a dogs name. Nobody cares. The issue here is that you'd quite like to be stopped in the park and hold court about the sources of names 😂 have another baby?

Bloozie · 29/01/2025 07:30

Olna is my favourite of your names. It suits a spaniel too.

This. My spaniel was called 'Pup' for the first 6 months of her life. She learned her named within a couple of days once I brought her home.

Faelywn sounds very like failing in my accent. Nori is very cute for a pup. Please leave a puppy pic when you get her

MissSookieStackhouse · 29/01/2025 08:23

Nori is really cute.

Mumtoocavvies · 29/01/2025 09:00

Thank you everyone for your sound advice, we have chosen Nori as it is very similar sounding to the name the breeder is calling her at the moment. We hope she will be able to pick it up quicker once she is home.

I will definitely add a picture of her onto the thread once we’ve collected her

Ah, Nori is a lovely name.

I am very particular about what we name our animals, and we have had a lot over the years - rats, guinea pigs, mice, hamsters, rabbits, dogs, cats... My husband and son put all the names forward for each animal, I get final say from their lists. I want them to have names with dignity - my husband would have named our last cat, Salacious Crumb, had he got his first pick, and I don't play their names for lols.

I have the power to veto their whole list and make them come up with new lists. I'm a benevolent dictator ;-)

Definitely sounds like Faelywn is not the way to go.. I imagine it would be Faelwen.. I liked it is as the meaning is Enchanted Friend.

Olna means Beauty and Fair
Frena means joyful or happy

Disa is from the rings of power and her name doesn’t appear to have a specific meaning

what do people think?

She's a dog. She won't care. And I doubt anyone else will either. Just call her whatever you prefer.

I love dogs but I can't ever imagine giving a shit about the name of any dog other than my own!

WiddlinDiddlin · 29/01/2025 16:56

I've never had any issues teaching a pup their new name.

I have had clients with issues... and it generally turns out that everyone is using the name without pairing it with treats and teaching the puppy it means something, so it rapidly becomes white-noise. Very common in households with small children who will repeat a puppies name over and over... and over and over.

Just sit with her - few tasty treats (probably not on day 1, they're usually a bit shell shocked and knackered and not wanting to try new foods) - puppy generally looking your way and not doing anything - and say the name, feed a treat, over and over.

A few sessions of that and you can move to saying the name and rolling/tossing the treat so its a bit more 'hey pay attention something exciting is happening'... and then move to doing this when she's not quite looking your way or is slightly interested in something else...

Don't jump straight from her having no idea and no connection between name and 'something nice', to trying to use it to get her attention when she is super engrossed in something.

Make sure her name just means 'you, I am talking to you, pay attention' and that no one uses it as a cue (to come to you, to sit, to stop doing something) or as a punishment. All very common ways people teach their pup to ignore their name!!

Nori is nice it is seaweed in Japanese but it suits, ours is like a little seaweed

Beautifulweeds · 29/01/2025 18:19

You need to go out and call each name a few times to see what you're comfortable with. Xx
