Grandparents “Names”… do we get a choice?

Okay relatively lighthearted. I’m just wondering if anyone else has been in this situation.

My husband and I are expecting our first baby. Both sets of parents are very excited- this will be the first grandchild on both sides.

My parents have said they’d love to be called Granny and Grandad.

We we’re with my husbands parents earlier and it came up, and his mum said they want to be known as Nana and Grumpy.

Grumpy? I…hate that 🤣🙈

So not Grandad, or Gramps, or Pops… Grumpy. GRUMPY.

So our child (in a few years of course- not expecting a speaking baby!) will literally be saying “Hi Grumpy, can we go play?” And “Grumpy can I have a snack?”

And are we meant to say “right come on, we’re going to Nana and Grumpys!”

Argh I just really hate it. Why can’t he just be Grandad?

But like… do we get a say in this? Could my husband have a word and say no? Or is it up to them what they want to be referred as?

YABU- stop being so precious and let them be called what they want by their grandchild

YANBU- no it’s weird

FWIW I'd hate it if I was called nanny or grandma 😵‍💫

I'm fascinated by people wanting to come up with these weird monikers rather than use Granny/Nanny/Grandma. My parents have done the same. Why? Is it because people think it makes them feel old?!

JustMyView13 · 28/01/2025 06:02

My response would be: oh, that’s different. DC won’t be able to get any birthday or Christmas cards with that on!

Yes! I’ve heard people say this so many times, they associate the grandma label with the older generation and they don’t see themselves as old. And I think the desire to be unique.
The worst one I’ve heard is ‘glam-ma’. Gave myself the ick just typing that.

YANBU to be a bit frustrated about it (I also think Grumpy is a bit daft).

My mum had some odd ideas about what she wanted to be called. I just told her whatever she wanted was fine although I was secretly hoping she'd eventually just revert to grandma (and she did - with some persuasion from my dad!)

I don't think it's a hill to die on but it is weird what some people come up with.

I’ve e never met any one in real life who does this. Nan and grandad are nan and grandad, who actually has a discussion about what to call them. Surely you go with whatever is used in your local area. Stop making something out of nothing.

With my mum, yes, it was because she has a big issue around feeling old, and also she wants to be cool/ unique/ trendy.

I take it it's the first baby in the family? Feel sorry for any sibling that then has a child and so their grandparents names are fixed and you end up with two grandmas and granddad's and spend your time saying either grandma X or 'your mums mum' to clarify.

There are loads of different names used in my local area. My children’s friends use, from what I’ve heard them say, Nana, Gran, Granny, Nan, Nanna, Mama, Grandad, Grandpa, Papa… surely no area has particular set names? Mine have a Granny, a Grandad, a Nana and a Papa. Neither set of their grandparents live in the same place as us, ILs live abroad and my parents are 1.5 hours away. So whose local area would you choose anyway? Yours or theirs?

Here it is mainly Grandma and Grandpa and Nana and Papa / Poppa with a few Oma /Opa’s

I know of 1 nanny, 1 granny and no grandads

My neighbour is Grumpy to his 11 grandchildren, most of them adults now, he loves it and all the children adore him. His own children and their partners just embraced it, let him be who he wants to be. Nicely - It's not about you and how you think you might feel calling him that in a few years time

@SerafinasGoose there you go... I didn't have my glasses on when I opened it.

Luckily my husband and I are both only children so don’t need to worry about this… phew!
