Did I do anything wrong here? Driving

1000 replies

Azzywhatty · 27/01/2025 13:48

I drove home from rural Northumberland today. On a single track road my sat nav fell out of its holder onto the passenger side floor. There was a lorry behind me. I continued along the single track road until it widened into two lanes, then indicated left, slowed down and stopped so I could pick it back up.

The lorry behind me beeped as I stopped. Did I do anything wrong here? I indicated and slowed and waited until the road went back to two lanes and it was safe to stop. I can’t work out why he was beeping.

There was no other traffic in either direction.

YANBU - you did nothing wrong
YABU - you did something wrong (what and why??)

Not when you stopped I hope!

Well no. I say in the OP I stopped when it opened into two lanes.

I went out earlier and had to stop on the side of a road to pop into a shop, while in there I heard a car horn blaring, I bought the bits and bobs I needed and came out to the horn still blaring - for some odd reason one car was sitting behind mine with the driver holding the horn down, meanwhile all the drivers who can drive were simply overtaking our stationary cars.

We seem to have found a certain type of Mumsnetter out in the wild.

Apologies if it was a joke. I’ve lost all sense of what is satire now.

I know you think you were right now OP, but I suspect the lorry driver - the only other witness to your driving - didn’t agree, or he wouldn’t have beeped you. At least where I am drivers don’t beep to say thanks.

I think he gave you pause for thought for good reason, but you’re probably in defensive mode now after this thread and I don’t entirely blame you.

Personally I think you didn’t do anything illegal of course, but that pulling in where you did was unwise in the particular circumstances outlined. Anyway, I’d think twice about it if you ever find yourself in a similar situation. I travel these types of roads all the time for reference.

Here's a 60mph road near me.

If you zoom in closely to the big tree on the left, you'll see a little white sign on a post.

That, believe it or not, is a bus stop.

Could you describe how a bus might stop to pick up passengers?

@DazzlingCuckoos you would be aware that a bus might stop to pick up passengers so that's not relevant

Nicelynicelyjohnson · 29/01/2025 15:10

What do you do if you come across an empty parked car on the roadway?
I was out this morning and I came across several.

@Nicelynicelyjohnson and were they all parked on 60mph roads blocking the flow of traffic? I doubt it. Even so..if they are already parked up it's totally different..the op knew the lorry driver was right behind her. It's not like she had been already parked up.

Idontpostmuch · 29/01/2025 09:41

@wakijaki09 You would have been in the wrong with the horn. Perhaps rather than telling @Azzywhatty to get driving lessons, you should get English lessons. Come on! Your, would of, should of, it's.

@Idontpostmuch there's a difference between bad grammar and appalling driving...I don't care if my spelling causes offense..It won't cause an accident. For all you know I could be dyslexic so don't be so stupid

wakijaki09 · 29/01/2025 22:08

Let's reverse this as if it was the lorry driver posting shall we?

So I driving my lorry this morning at work, some woman driving along like she doesn't know where she's going. We go from a 30mph to a national speed limit so expect her to speed up to match conditions of the road. Instead she slows down, puts her indicators on even though there's no junction and then suddenly stops in the middle of the road for no reason I can fathom and starts mucking about in her car.
I can see to go around her but am annoyed that she's decided to park on the road and blocked the lane in front of me.
I beep my horn as she's causing an obstruction which is dangerous and then have to manoeuvre the lorry around her.
Aibu to have beeped?
Everyone with half a gram of common sense....no you weren't being unreasonable...
Everyone else..no it's totally fine to block the lane whilst she puts her lipstick on or whatever she likes ....
Groan!

HollyKnight · 29/01/2025 17:49

Nope. I was being sarcastic. PP doesn't think the lorry driver could have anticipated that the OP was going to pull over even though she indicated it. It was a shock and a surprise to him causing him to swerve across the road to avoid smashing into the back of her.

When, in reality, if you see someone indicate, you do anticipate them doing something.

Yes, sorry about that! I realised that your post wasn't serious almost as soon as I'd posted a reply to it, as I then saw your other post which made it obvious! 🤣🤣🤣

EauNeu · 29/01/2025 22:14

the amount of confidently wrong in this thread is record breaking.

I have really enjoyed imaging a bunch of mumsnetters finding themselves pulling to the side of an A road today (to let a child or friend out of the car for example) and suddenly their face becoming hot with shame at realising that this is what they were on here parping on about being against the law (which it absoutely isn't - even on a dual carriageway, unless there are signs or road markings to indicate otherwise).

but because you're a competent lorry driver who has passed a test and presumably not on their first trip out, you understand this person is about to stop at the side of the road, and you easily indicate and pass them without even needing to slow the vehicle?

"some woman"...bit misogynistic sounding, giving yourself away there

"am annoyed that she's decided to park on the road and blocked the lane in front of me."
if you're that way out then there's no pleasing you. Do you get annoyed about roadworks, buses pulled over, bikes that are slower than you that you need to pass...yes you probably do actually

We didn’t go from 30mph to national speed limit. It was always 60mph limit.

I’m not sure what manoeuvre you’re envisaging. He turned the wheel.

Or

I was driving my lorry through the country today. I was stuck behind a car doing 20mph for aaaages. Thankfully when the road widened up the car indicated and pulled over so I could overtake. I gave the lady a thank you toot as I passed. I don't know why I'm making a thread about this.

AlpacaMittens · 29/01/2025 22:32

This thread is absolutely amazing 🤣🤣🤣 Has nobody read the Highway Code?

I loved the logic of "you couldn't have safely parked on THIS ROAD, you should have turned and safely parked on ANOTHER ROAD" 🤣

OP it's pretty simple. Did you indicate and then safely come to a stop on a stretch of road without any parking restrictions? Then you were fine.

The lorry could have beeped for safety, or because he was a twat. Doesn't matter.

MrsDefrost · 29/01/2025 22:36

sandyhappypeople · 29/01/2025 17:10

You don't get it OP. You will never get it. It's okay.

It doesn't matter how many times people explain it in very plain basic language you're still comparing your situation to completely irrelevant situations which aren't comparable to yours, it's pointless and tedious and it has absolutely no bearing on what happened.

You weren't pulling off the road, or stopping to pick up kids, or pulling up outside your house or pulling into a driveway, or going to the shops or any number of places where someone following you would expect you to stop.. You were on a 60mph road with nothing around, coming out of a very slow section of road, and the person following you probably didn't expect you to stop, and maybe you didn't give him as much time to react to what you were doing before you actually did it as you think you did.

You wouldn't have had to make him stop or go around you if you'd have found somewhere off the road to pull up, but maybe you just aren't comfortable negotiating anything like that. You won't change, inconsiderate people don't suddenly learn to be considerate, it's either in you or it isn't.

There are no words for this one. 😂

You're just a bad, reckless, bad driver. Every good driver knows that you park on ANOTHER road, and not THIS road.

Do drivers do ‘thank you toots’ though?
Not a thing at all where I live, but might be different in Northumberland??

Lorries, yes. How else would they acknowledge you? It's not like they can hold their hand up for you to see through the rear window.

Annoyed people don't toot. They sound their horn.

What a silly thing to say, it's a bus! You don't need to physically see a bus stop to know that it is likely to pull over at one, it should really come as no surprise when one starts to indicate and slow down in front of you.

Azzywhatty · 29/01/2025 23:26

Much as it should come as no surprise when any vehicle indicates, breaks and slows down in front of you.

But good to know stopping is fine for buses and vehicles are able to overtake them. But cars have a magic aura rendering drivers’ observation and driving skills redundant.
