Did I do anything wrong here? Driving

1000 replies

Azzywhatty · 27/01/2025 13:48

I drove home from rural Northumberland today. On a single track road my sat nav fell out of its holder onto the passenger side floor. There was a lorry behind me. I continued along the single track road until it widened into two lanes, then indicated left, slowed down and stopped so I could pick it back up.

The lorry behind me beeped as I stopped. Did I do anything wrong here? I indicated and slowed and waited until the road went back to two lanes and it was safe to stop. I can’t work out why he was beeping.

There was no other traffic in either direction.

YANBU - you did nothing wrong
YABU - you did something wrong (what and why??)

Free hazard perception test practice here. Happy to admit I got 11 out of 15 on it. A pass, but by no means perfect.

The theory test didn't exist when I passed my test (yes - I'm getting on a bit!)

https://www.safedrivingforlife.info/free-practice-tests/practice-theory-test-for-car-drivers-1-of-2/?utm_source=gov.uk&utm_medium=website&utm_campaign=take-practice-theory-test

This page has a free practice theory test too.

Given I've done no revision and passed my original test some 30 years ago, I just got 45/50.

Would be interesting to see what others get!

That was kind of fun. I got 13/15 for the hazard perception test (5/3/5). That test was very new when I took it in the early 2000's. I think that was also around the time they introduced the show-and-tell part of the driving test. I had to show how to check the oil level.

I got 48/50 on this theory test. (I think it was 96 or 98% in the real one). Funnily enough I got the puffin crossing question wrong then too! I don't know if I've even seen a puffin crossing in person. It has never stuck in my head. A crossing is a crossing. 😬 Also, that big yellow grid thing is new to me. I just remember being told to never stop in a yellow box so I went with that. A couple of others were educated guesses that worked out ok.

This was the case almost 20 years ago when I passed my test. It’s amazing to think that some drivers never had to do so.

It was taught and tested on the road. If you failed to spot the hazard, the instructor/ examiner screamed 'fucking brake' or slammed their brakes on. Not sure if this aided learning. They give us a chance to catch up on this though, if you're lucky enough to get sent on a naughty drivers course, apparently - so a friend told me....

We didn't have to do parallel parking either which is why I'm crap at it. I am however shit hot at reversing round a corner or into a parking space!

@wakijaki09

Well this is fun!

Here is my version of what the lorry driver thought ( with a lot less imaginary nonsense)

I was driving through the lanes today and when the road opened up the driver in front of me indicated, then slowed down and stopped at the side of the road leaving plenty of room for me to get by. As a professional driver I keep a good distance back from cars in front of me. I indicated and gave a thank you beep as I drove away.

How is that? Not as dramatic as your version but never mind

I strongly suspect that @wakijaki09 is not a driver and has never passed a driving test! He/she has been spouting some utter nonsense on this thread! 😂

It wasn't some highway in the USA!
What single carriageways (one lane each direction) in the countryside have enough room for a car to pass without crossing the middle white line?

Yes, so if that's the case, wait for a safe place to stop.

Technonan · 30/01/2025 16:00

Which is what OP did.
Clearly your definition of safe place is not the same as the Highway Code's.

I got the puffin crossing wrong too - I also called the sign for a roundabout a mini roundabout.

Looking at the ones I got wrong I'm pleased that none of the answers actually make me a dangerous driver. On a puffin crossing I'm not going anywhere whether it's flashing amber or solid amber. A roundabout versus a mini roundabout is still a roundabout.

One of the others I got wrong was towing weight where I chose the registration certificate rather than handbook, but clearly I've muddled towing weight and load weight. I won't be towing anything anytime soon, so again, happy it's not saying I'm a danger to the roads!

Yellow boxes I'm fine at - have to turn right in one most evenings!

I am not sure I've ever reversed around a corner since my final driving lesson! Didn't even come up in my test, which was a good thing really as I'd have probably failed on it.

I can, however, parallel park like a dream. I got an impressed thumbs up from a van driver the other week for reversing into a very tight spot! So proud of myself! 😂

OneTC · 30/01/2025 18:44

When I did my first test there was no theory, when I passed on the third attempt they had introduced the theory test but there was no hazard perception section.

Much like similar schemes (CSCS etc) the theory test is a dunce filter, set very low to only exclude the extremely stupid.

Sorry if people weren't able to pass 🙏

Azzywhatty · 29/01/2025 22:21

How would you see the bus stop with a bus in front of you?

It's a bus..you expect it to pick people up and set them down. I live rurally so buses don't always stop at actual stops..people just wait anywhere and stick thier hand out or the bus might stop to let people off.
You are not a bus..you were aware the driver was behind you. You are in the wrong ..end off!
Unless it was an emergency then you should not of blocked the lane

wakijaki09 · 30/01/2025 22:09

EauNeu · 29/01/2025 22:18

but because you're a competent lorry driver who has passed a test and presumably not on their first trip out, you understand this person is about to stop at the side of the road, and you easily indicate and pass them without even needing to slow the vehicle?

"some woman"...bit misogynistic sounding, giving yourself away there

"am annoyed that she's decided to park on the road and blocked the lane in front of me."
if you're that way out then there's no pleasing you. Do you get annoyed about roadworks, buses pulled over, bikes that are slower than you that you need to pass...yes you probably do actually

I don't get annoyed at anything slowing me down that I expect might do so and am considerate to other road users. I both cycle and ride horses as well as drive so I'm always considerate to ALL road users regardless. Something the OP obviously isn't as she thinks she owns the road to do what she likes with and to hell with anyone who gets annoyed at her terrible driving and lack of consideration. She was fully aware the lorry driver was behind her, she could of driven on until it was safe for her to stop without obstruction.
If he has gotten abusive with her I could understand her being so upset ..so what if he sounded his horn at her terrible decision. He's not a mind reader to know she was going to stop and block.
I live rurally in a tourist destination so have to deal with this sort of thing all the time because people don't know where they are going or want to stop and look at the scenery and are completely oblivious to all other traffic 🤦

wakijaki09 · 30/01/2025 22:11

Azzywhatty · 29/01/2025 22:21

But the flow of traffic wasn’t blocked. The lorry continued past me.

Omg OP... you blocked the bloody lane! You then forced him to have to use the oncoming lane 🤦🤦

Yes but the op obviously thought he was in the wrong for beeping her. For all we know maybe he did beep for a thanks (doubtful). I do a lot of long distance driving down narrow roads and yes it can be frustrating when someone is slow in front of you similarly I've had people up my tail lights as they think I should be going faster. The best thing to do is find somewhere SAFE to pull in and allow the traffic to continue..not atop and block the lane forcing you on to the wrong side of the road

Wrong! My issue is with lack of consideration for other road users as I come across it daily where I live in many forms and it's my pet peeve.
Op could of just driven on a little further until it was completely safe to park without causing obstruction as she was aware the lorry was behind her...or she could of just accepted that maybe the lorry driver was slightly annoyed at her driving given he probably wouldn't be expecting her to indicate and stop in the lane. But she chose to post about it and blame the lorry driver and ask for our opinions. Even when everyone has given their opinions she still thinks she did nothing wrong ..and maybe she didn't. That's an matter of opinion..which she asked for!

DazzlingCuckoos · 30/01/2025 22:46

Omfg this is infuriating!

AnotherWeekAnotherUsername · 30/01/2025 23:02

I’ve noticed posters who agree OP was fine use ‘could have” and those who think she was wrong use ‘could of’. Interesting observation I thought. Anyway as you were…

DazzlingCuckoos · 30/01/2025 23:17

I think you'll find I agreed with OP and would never use "could of" because, despite your intimation, I am not as thick as shit.

Quite the opposite in fact. Plus, my dad was a driving instructor and another close relative was a police advanced response driver.

There have been numerous posts highlighting that OP did nothing illegal yet this seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

I don't think anyone has said she has done anything illegal have they?
The OP post was asking did she do anything wrong..some people said yes..some said no.
I don't think that you calling people ' thick as shit' because of bad grammar is very nice tbh but there we go. Some people like myself might have had turbulent traumatic childhoods or physical or mental disabilities that impeded our learning time whilst at school or bigger things to worry about other than writing could have or could of. But you feel free to mock if it makes you feel better in yourself
