To think eventually, UK could become a part of the USA?

Depending on how Trump gets on … he doesn’t seem shy about taking over other countries. On paper it would make sense globally for the UK and the USA to become one … USA, Canada,UK - what a superpower that would be.

on top of this, there is a hell of a lot of UK support for Trump, I don’t even think the British would object to a takeover on the whole

Seems far fetched I know - but less far fetched that it did a few years ago

Go and have a look if you’re interested 😊

I don't know anyone who wants to ban abortion in real life, or leave the WHO or the Paris Climate agreement, or free prisoners. Freeing prisoners was already done here and was very unpopular.

Ah, so it wasn't actually a flex then, just that I voiced an anti Starmer opinion.

Thanks for the explainer, cool story, needed moar dragons.

Anywho..

When Trump is King, we'll all get hats that say,

I saw this genuinely and not as a wind up but the only place I see people still suffering from “TDS” is right here on MN and occasionally on X, they’ve nearly all gone to Blue Sky now. In RL every one I know is hoping that the changes in the US trickle over here.

What US style changes would you like to see?

Hants123 · 27/01/2025 13:02

Strangely I read about this somewhere else recently - obviously not happening in the short term but the very long term and then Twitter showed me this morning that Elon Musk has renamed the English Channel the George Washington Channel and now Mumsnet have it so must be a given.

No chance in hell. We’re a constitutional monarchy not a republic and that’s not going to change. And Trump is actually a fan of the Royal Family.

Although he probably isn’t a favourite of theirs with his talk about taking possession of Canada, with Charles being its head of state.

The UK has been a republic in all but name for centuries. The term "Crowned republic" is the term that has been used (Tennyson and HG Wells among those that did).

The English Bill of Rights 1689 solidified the supremacy of Parliament over the crown (glorious revolution).

It's why in the UK there was never anything akin to the revolution in France or those that took place throughout Europe in the 19th century.

It's also why the Industrial Revolution happened in Britain and not other nations with a monarchy, as one monarch was essentially powerless, unlike the others.

Charles I is the last time Britain had a monarch who exercised power, and he was executed for doing so.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 27/01/2025 13:02

Apart from the obvious lunacy, what have we got that he wants? Greenland have oil and minerals, Canada same and is already conveniently attached to the US. Scotland has some oil, but the rest of the UK? Anyway, this came to mind.

Has this come off the back of Elon's latest post? He is trolling, obviously.

Whoarethoseguys · 27/01/2025 13:03

There isn't a lot of support for Trump in the UK except among Reform.
And of course the people would object. I can think of nothing worse!

What?

I thought the UK had sawn a big old gulf in the sea and Exited Europe?

Sailed away into the ocean, nearer the US.. took little Ireland with us as like an Emotional Support Spaniel, but an island..

And I think you’re probably in an on line echo chamber 🤷🏼‍♀️

Odd policy I know people in RL think sounds sensible - but they still think Trump is a joke or even dangerous - he has a real credibility problem.

That could change if things go as he want ( or people round him want) - but american problems are huge and very unique to them.

No-one - even with our NHS current state - want USA health care it's the bogyman, no-one want their gun problems, no one wants their schooling it's perhaps unfairly in some areas got a poor reputation - no-one want their lack of employment laws with lack of holidays and sick days - no-one want their extreme in wealth divide especially the poverty levels.

Thing aren't going well in the UK in many respects but honestly I don't think american has answers for us and I don't know anyone who thinks they do.

TeenLifeMum · 27/01/2025 13:04

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/01/2025 12:54

I agree - most people in the Uk either seem to despise or be laughing at Trump

I initially thought this but there’s pockets of people who think he’s great in my work place. I was shocked but I imagine people will see him shipping out immigrants and will think he’s a hero, because the media has created a narrative that “bloody immigrants” are to blame for all the country’s failings.

I wonder what Keir would look like in orange 🍊

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 27/01/2025 13:05

Just out of interest, Daphne du Maurier’s last novel “Rule Britannia” from 1972 deals with just such a scenario; withdrawal from the EEC has brought the UK to the brink of bankruptcy, and so has joined the US to form a single nation…

It’s an odd novel with some jarring shifts in tone, and definitely not one of her best, but is well worth a read particularly in light of the current Trumpian nonsense.

No.I think you've misunderstood.

It's not really about Starmer at all. Like him or loathe him it beggars belief someone would prefer a sexual abuser.

cardibach · 27/01/2025 13:06

There’s been an ipsos poll on U.K. people’s view of him as US President. I don’t think thinking he’s ok as that means you would want to be taken over, so I assume favourability to that question would be lower. 3 in 5 dont even like hi. As US President the only group where it’s over 50% (just) is Reform voters. I assume @Adamante‘s social circle is the extreme end of those if none of them express dislike of him.

To think eventually, UK could become a part of the USA?

Go back to bed Donald.

It is true the US is pulling away from getting involved over here, and concentrating on them

Xag · 27/01/2025 13:07

Reform might be oddly warm towards Trump.

But there is no way they would be getting rid of the monarchy.

I already have an orange overlord, so no thanks.

Have a listen to James O Brien's programme on LBC this morning 10 am to around 11.20 am

You can skip the news and adverts so it won't take you long .....🙂

It is absolutely terrifying to me that anyone could suggest it a good idea that we link up with the US .....listening to the wonderfully intelligent and articulate callers explaining what happened to their relatives in 1933 to 1942....made me scared and very very sad
