To think eventually, UK could become a part of the USA?

Depending on how Trump gets on … he doesn’t seem shy about taking over other countries. On paper it would make sense globally for the UK and the USA to become one … USA, Canada,UK - what a superpower that would be.

on top of this, there is a hell of a lot of UK support for Trump, I don’t even think the British would object to a takeover on the whole

Seems far fetched I know - but less far fetched that it did a few years ago

Like?

Indeed, which countries has Trump/the US taken over. I cannot think of any that fit this claim.

SerendipityJane · 27/01/2025 16:19

Meanwhile I am reading that Trumps threat to prosecute President Biden (who didn't pardon himself) will fail as President Biden has immunity (thanks to Donald Trump).

Us Brits simply aren't smart enough to see how genius that is.

Rainbunny · 27/01/2025 16:20

This is ridiculous and not going to happen. Trump isn't going to get Greenland and definitely not Canada either. As for your supposition that Trump has loads of support in the UK, he really, really doesn't. Just a few loud Reform party types.

Trump will not be around forever or even very long! I'll be surprised if he's still alive by the end of his term. There's no real Trump heir-apparent waiting to succeed him either, I think he's a unique individual and thankfully an impossible act to follow.

Trump has totally taken over la la land.

Reform UK are dedicated to the sovereignty of the United Kingdom and reject any foreign interference in it's affairs. They are a serious political party with principles. Not a sordid vote grubbing exercise by a shady spiv who lives in Belgium. (That's the other Reform party)

So you don't believe that any politician acts with integrity?

Small, local politicians, yes, some. US federal politicians? Very, very few. There are literally trillions of dollars and almost unlimited power at stake. That attracts exactly whom you would think it does.

Just to be clear, Liz Truss - and Rishi Sunak - became PM without being elected by the public as the leader of their party.

The unwritten British Constitution allows this, but maybe shouldn't.

However, let's talk about President Ford. Who became President without being elected President or Vice President as he replaced that other presidential crook, Nixon.

Ford became president Constitutionally, as has every other president. Not sure what your point is. I'm not defending US politicians, just saying every country has had its share of clunkers.

MissConductUS · 27/01/2025 16:29

LifeExperience · 27/01/2025 16:18

No argument there. The US also has a huge military-industrial complex, with billions of dollars and millions of high-paying jobs dependent on huge defense expenditures. That's why Trump gets so much push back from both parties about cutting defense expenditures and commitments. The big defense contractors (known in the military as Beltway Bandits because of their lobbying buildings which circle the DC beltway) spend millions bribing Congress to fund the next whiz bang weapons system/platform. And most of the very highest ranking military officers and civilians in the Pentagon immediately go to work for them after "serving their country."

Here's another factoid which may shock: many of these same ghouls were happy to expend our old munitions in Ukraine and advocated for the war because then the US military would have to buy all new munitions. It's horrifying--war as a profit center. And it needs to end.

Those "whiz-bang" weapons systems are what have kept Ukraine from being overrun by the Russians. The UK has dozens of privately owned, for-profit arms manufacturers as well. Does that also "need to end"?

He's already wittered on about wanting Greenland, and also Canada.

Over both our countries collective dead bodies. Greenland have already said Fuck you directly to Trump (direct quote from their leader) and Canada feels the same way. It would be a very cold day in hell before either of these countries became American.

Just because you want another country to be yours doesn’t mean that it will be.

And Truss and Sunak likewise. However, they were not chosen as PM by popular vote.

At the moment we have bigger fish to fry, such as the font for the new department memos. However when things have settled down the UK could do worse than revisit the issue of a PM being removed/dying/incapacitated and codify some rules. There was zero mandate from the public for Liz Truss decisions or Rishi Sunaks decisions.

The US may allow for people to be elected by lying - in fact double down on it. However having actually experienced it, UK citizens are a tad more circumspect. Who knows, it could become a defining difference.

mondaytosunday · 27/01/2025 16:35

It makes far more sense for the UK to be part of the EU but we blew that didn't we?

Coolasfeck · 27/01/2025 16:12

So a tech bro wants Greenland for a different reason than the US military does. Not exactly dispositive, IMO. Trump isn't going to buy Greenland. However, Greenland, not Denmark, will get to decide its fate.

American here. It's only been 6 days. He's serious about Greenland for strategic reasons. Eastern Canada will do if we can't get Greenland, but we'll get Greenland, probably as a territory. Greenland's leadership has already signaled that they are open to it. Denmark can sputter and gasp and issue sternly worded letters all it wants. It has to do with building an "iron dome" type of missile defense system over the US, which is in the planning stages.

As for the UK, no we don't want you. We're trying to reduce our commitments to Europe, not increase them. Europeans have never played well in the sandbox together and the vast majority of Americans are beyond tired of being pulled into your conflicts. Just no.

Yeah Canadian here. It will be a very cold day in hell before any Canadian will vote or allow us to become American. We don’t want to be part of you nor will we ever become the 51st state.

And btw the way the leader of Greenland in response to Trump taking over Greenland Fuck you Trump”. So not no signalling at all.

Your arrogance to believe you can just take over sovereign, democratic counties is astounding based hugely on the fact that the US became a country to flee and avoid monarchal and religious persecution from Europe.

Maybe turn off Fox News, learn about the fact that the US can’t just do what they want and realise your arrogance and ignorance is offensive and very very misplaced.

I don't mind too much that being allowed but I do firmly believe there should be a mandatory IQ test before they can even put their name forward. Because there isn't a chance in hell that Truss, Bojo or some of the other fuckwits who thought they should be running the country looking at you, Jeremy Hunt would have been inflicted on us then.

There is some indication that Biden committed illegal acts while veep and during Trump's 1st term. Trump won't pursue it, though. A prosecutor has already determined that Biden isn't mentally fit enough to participate in his own defense. Trump's remark was red meat to the MAGA base and a bit of a veiled threat to the Democrats that Biden didn't pardon.

JoyousGreyOrca · 27/01/2025 16:45

Trump wants Greenland because of the valuable minerals it has that technology is being developed to exploit. It is colonialism. Invade another country, and strip their wealth away.

The newly inaugurated president held forth on multiple foreign policy issues on Saturday, from Greenland to Canada to the war between Israel and Hamas.

Another American here. And I agree entirely about the rampant anti-Americanism here, not to mention the unconscious bias on the part of moderators at MNHQ. I don't think it's hatred, I think it's lost empire syndrome with a hefty dose of resentment over the fact that a former colony has done so much better economically than they have. We have a dynamic, growing, wealth-creating economy, and they have stagnation and low productivity. So they take cheap shots and endlessly recycle urban legends about what it's like in the U.S.

I don’t even think of American as a lost colony, sorry to disappoint you. And while you’ve done very well economically, it’s not hatred to say social policies are not th8ngs I like. The health system is positively cruel, the rampant use of guns is scary and the more or less total lack of workers’ rights is positively backward looking for us. It’s not hatred of America to say that - before even mentioning Trump, who I actually probably do hate. He represents a lot of the things I hate anyway - rampant greed, homophobia, misogyny, racism, sexual incontinence and exploitation of sex workers.

Can't help but remember the Yes Minster guide to the papers

Hacker: Don't tell me about the press. I know exactly who reads the papers: the Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country; The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country; The Times is read by the people who actually do run the country; the Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country; the Financial Times is read by people who own the country; the Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country; and The Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is.
