To think eventually, UK could become a part of the USA?

Depending on how Trump gets on … he doesn’t seem shy about taking over other countries. On paper it would make sense globally for the UK and the USA to become one … USA, Canada,UK - what a superpower that would be.

on top of this, there is a hell of a lot of UK support for Trump, I don’t even think the British would object to a takeover on the whole

Seems far fetched I know - but less far fetched that it did a few years ago

What planet are you on to think there's a lot of support here from Donold Trump? And moreso that no-one would object?

Give over you dafty! You really need to open up from whatever circles you're mixing in.

Shall we discuss politicians the UK has voted for? Liz Truss? Bojo? The problem with political power is that the worst people want it.

Just to be clear, Liz Truss - and Rishi Sunak - became PM without being elected by the public as the leader of their party.

The unwritten British Constitution allows this, but maybe shouldn't.

However, let's talk about President Ford. Who became President without being elected President or Vice President as he replaced that other presidential crook, Nixon.

God no thanks. Have you read the US's terrible employment and maternity/paternity laws. Have you actually been to Miami and seen the poverty and deprivation and drug issues. Have you read about the problem with gun violence. Have you understood the US constitution. Do you worry about the abortion laws and what that means for womens rights. Do you understand the racial issues in the US. Do you even know that the US and UK are built on entirely differrnt governmental and legal systems and the two are not interchangable. Please educate yourself before you promote this insanity. I am sure trump and Elon would love to 'buy' the UK, if you want to understand what an oligarch looks like then just look at Russia.please research all the above points in detail and then update us in a year in your views.

So you don't believe that any politician acts with integrity?

A. I don’t live in the UK
B. I was asking whose water is private, not who has privatized the water companies
C. According to others it’s not all of the UK

80s there were sold off in England idea being private investment money would upgrade.

I was surprised moving to wales to find Welsh water a non profit company - we've found them good. I don't know what N.I or Scotland have done.

Water is unlike electric and gas companies in UK you can't change who the supplier so water companies are regional monopolies.

Water companies tend to hit the news cycle when they have problems - often due to lack of investment - when the are hose pipe bans in hot weather and when the regulator deals with companies wanting to put the bills up.

Tap water in the UK is drinkable and very safe unlike in large areas of the USA.

Some people do have private bores holes /wells.springs is the UK - they tend to be less common.

I'm not sure you realise how utterly ridiculous comments like this sound to the rest of the world.

Greenland is not yours to take but that aside Canada is a sovereign country and a founding member of Nato. Article 5 states that an attack on Canada would be viewed as an attack on the NATO alliance and all members would defend Canada.

I mean we all knowTrump is not the sharpest tool in the box but not even he is that stupid.

Canada is also a member of the Commonwealth, with the King as the head of state. They would never consent to become the 51st state of the US.

Please stop referring to my social circle in that snarky way because it implies that I am existing in this isolated little RL RW echo chamber of like minded, enforcing friends, and thus my opinions cannot hold much value. I don’t really have a “social circle” for various reasons but I do come across many people in the course of my job and part of it is building friendly and comfortable relationships with people so they’ll trust me and accept my help/services, and that is where I am getting my information from 😊. Thanks.

Nothing snarky. Looking at the figures from the poll, the people you meet socially and professionally are unusual if they all like Trump. That’s just maths.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 27/01/2025 15:57

Can we pick and choose citizens when the US does our British Empire impersonation and takes over the UK?

I’m going to vote no on @Crazybaby123 she doesn’t seem like a good fit. 😜

They’d be better off entering in their own right.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 27/01/2025 15:59

He’d hate us to join the US as we’re in MASSES of debt and our demographic of citizen isn’t to his taste.

Ah ok, Google is misleading then.

As of 2024, 22 U.S. states required background checks and/or permits for the purchase of a handgun. A further 13 states had regulations on openly carrying firearms in public, however, only California, Connecticut, Florida, and Illinois had completely prohibited open carry for all firearms.

Google is muddying the waters. All states allow gun ownership for adults as required by the 2nd Amendment. Each state has its own nuances, permitting rules, carry laws etc. but all allow gun ownership.

I saw this genuinely and not as a wind up but the only place I see people still suffering from “TDS” is right here on MN and occasionally on X, they’ve nearly all gone to Blue Sky now. In RL every one I know is hoping that the changes in the US trickle over here.

What on earth are you on about?

Indeed. I hope none of that lunacy ends up over here. Six weeks unpaid maternity leave? It's monumentally shit. No thanks.

koolku · 27/01/2025 16:08

The intellectually lazy liberal left in the UK have always been hysterically obsessed about becoming America’s poodle 🙄. There’s a lot anti-American prejudice out there - personified by the Labour front bench, Lammy, Starmer, etc. However, the British left didn’t mind being ruled directly from Berlin and (to a lesser extent) Paris!

Have they? As opposed to who the the right wing Royalists as they would love to have a president wouldn't they - oh hang on... Know much about the culture of the United Kingdom do you!

Just old-fashioned, colonising asset-strippers then? What a complete and utter surprise. I am shocked.

The US healthcare system will certainly fix the NHS waiting lists but not in a way we would appreciate.

@koolku Sigh. So many inaccuracies and conspiracy theories.
Britain wants to be ruled by Britain. That is all.

It’s not protection, it’s a racket. Start wars to plunder other countries resources and then act like the world’s policeman.

US and UK are flip sides of the same corrupt coin.

No argument there. The US also has a huge military-industrial complex, with billions of dollars and millions of high-paying jobs dependent on huge defense expenditures. That's why Trump gets so much push back from both parties about cutting defense expenditures and commitments. The big defense contractors (known in the military as Beltway Bandits because of their lobbying buildings which circle the DC beltway) spend millions bribing Congress to fund the next whiz bang weapons system/platform. And most of the very highest ranking military officers and civilians in the Pentagon immediately go to work for them after "serving their country."

Here's another factoid which may shock: many of these same ghouls were happy to expend our old munitions in Ukraine and advocated for the war because then the US military would have to buy all new munitions. It's horrifying--war as a profit center. And it needs to end.
