To think eventually, UK could become a part of the USA?

Depending on how Trump gets on … he doesn’t seem shy about taking over other countries. On paper it would make sense globally for the UK and the USA to become one … USA, Canada,UK - what a superpower that would be.

on top of this, there is a hell of a lot of UK support for Trump, I don’t even think the British would object to a takeover on the whole

Seems far fetched I know - but less far fetched that it did a few years ago

Exactly. Anti-American hatred and misinformation is allowed to run rampant on here. Doesn't bother me or I wouldn't be here. But we Americans aren't stupid. We know what you think of us and we're sick of protecting people who hate us.

The thing is plenty of people would say that they wouldn't want to change their nationality in the scenario the OP is describing, I mean how many Canadians are saying it? Would Americans want to be British in that forced scenerio, of course they wouldn't!

HelpMeGetThrough · 27/01/2025 15:41

But we Americans aren't stupid.

Oh come on, you lot voted him in twice.

Even a comedian would find that hard to make it fucking funnier than it already is.

Goldenbear · 27/01/2025 15:20

Why is this relevant, you have made it clear that the UK is not wanted anyway and gone out of your way to belittle its worth, so you are posting to what, shout about how great America is, we already have heard all that for months now.

I responded to a post. It's what we do here.

I remember hearing a top US military person say the same, you'll miss us when we're gone

Thatcher did. In the 1980s. As you’d know if you lived in the UK.

Do you count Scotland and NI as UK? As I don't believe water is privatised there.

NotthinglikeaBondGirl · 27/01/2025 15:42

Daphne du Maurier wrote a book about his - 'Rule Britannia' - it's a good read

Another American here. And I agree entirely about the rampant anti-Americanism here, not to mention the unconscious bias on the part of moderators at MNHQ. I don't think it's hatred, I think it's lost empire syndrome with a hefty dose of resentment over the fact that a former colony has done so much better economically than they have. We have a dynamic, growing, wealth-creating economy, and they have stagnation and low productivity. So they take cheap shots and endlessly recycle urban legends about what it's like in the U.S.

That will be a No.

Is it April 1st already?

It must be - this month has already been 90 days long.

Excellent summary of Trump character from Nate White, above. Well observed, Mr White.

Not really very funny. DH has just cancelled his subscription to this lame rag.

Applesonthelawn · 27/01/2025 15:44

I'm not sure why this is all that unreasonable. We became part of Europe, and then weren't again, so what's the difference? There's already intelligence cooperation with the anglosphere, five eyes.

I don't think he could "buy" a country (although the US bought the US Virgin Islands from Denmark, so it's not without precedent), but we could certainly be "as good as" in the same way Germany, France etc are in a union with Europe. Culturally I think it's a better match in some ways than Europe.
I don't think it will happen but I didn't think we'd leave Europe either.

It’s not protection, it’s a racket. Start wars to plunder other countries resources and then act like the world’s policeman.

US and UK are flip sides of the same corrupt coin.

A. I don’t live in the UK
B. I was asking whose water is private, not who has privatized the water companies
C. According to others it’s not all of the UK

AlteredStater · 27/01/2025 15:46

What about the issue that countries like Russia and China to name but two may begin to feel threatened by an America that is absorbing other countries like Canada, Greenland and the UK, and thus is increasing its reach and power?

thepariscrimefiles · 27/01/2025 15:47

LifeExperience · 27/01/2025 15:14

Thank you for that. Do the people in the UK not drive cars? Why yes, yes they do, because they have insurance. Do they fear owning houses because they might burn down? No, they have insurance on them. Americans don't fear getting sick/injured because we have...wait for it...insurance!

Nobody has to sell their house if they get cancer. Nobody is dying in the street. FEDGOV has strict rules about what health insurance must provide. ALL health insurance policies in the US have out-of-pocket maximums. Hit the max and the insurance pays 100% of the rest. My friend has a complex cancer. His insurance has spent well over a million dollars on him with no end in sight. He has nurses in every day and gets 3 transfusions a week, all on his insurance. Another friend is on a very expensive medication for rheumatoid arthritis. Her insurance pays thousands of dollars for each shot. She pays nothing. Are there problems with American healthcare? Of course, but it's not the dystopian hellscape that MNers, most of whom have never been to the US, think. As we Americans would say, a bunch of y'all are "talkin' out yer asses."

The US always come miles below the UK in world rankings of healthcare systems.

'According to the 2024 Mirror, Mirror report, Australia, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom have the best healthcare systems, though the differences in overall performance among most countries are relatively small. In stark contrast, the United States ranks last, with its healthcare system performing dramatically lower than the others.'

Ah ok, Google is misleading then.

As of 2024, 22 U.S. states required background checks and/or permits for the purchase of a handgun. A further 13 states had regulations on openly carrying firearms in public, however, only California, Connecticut, Florida, and Illinois had completely prohibited open carry for all firearms.

Not really. There are of course nuances.

Several states have laws (just) on concealed carry. But that isn't "banning" guns by any stretch of the imagination.

And in TX it seemed it was the law you had to carry a gun 😀

EasternStandard · 27/01/2025 15:47

@MissConductUS it's even more pronounced on mn. The US will withdraw funding and we'll find stuff harder, the US won't

It's odd to see as the U.K. has far less clout and pretty much bends to the US

The US isn't going to invade Canada. Or Greenland. And of course we wouldn't want to be forced to be British. Nobody is forcing anyone to do anything. Greenland will have a choice, as they should. But already overtures are being made and young Greenlanders, especially, love the idea of being able to freely travel to the US, get jobs, go to uni, etc. Also, none of our territories pay taxes to the federal gov't, so it's a great deal for them. All of the benefits of statehood without the taxes.

Shall we discuss politicians the UK has voted for? Liz Truss? Bojo? The problem with political power is that the worst people want it.

Yes and I'm responding to yours as your take on it is defensiveness whereas actually you wouldn't take to kindly to being told to relinquish your nationality, your cultural identity would you?

SerendipityJane · 27/01/2025 15:50

Is it "choice" with a gun at your head ? remember this is a site where the vast majority are very aware of issues around consent.

We didn't vote for Liz Truss as PM.
