To think bums should be covered in a public pool?

I may be being unreasonable and I’m just old and out of touch… took my kids swimming today at our local public pool and there was a lady wearing one of those swimming costumes that is basically a thong at the back? I saw lots of them in the beach during the summer which I kind of understand as it helps you get a very high cut tan/eliminates tan lines but I felt a bit weird seeing one in an indoor pool? Not sure where boundaries lie…? Happy to be told IABU but wondered what others think?

So we're all being subjected to peoples arses for the owners vanity?

Zanatdy · 27/01/2025 07:18

Agree, public pools are different to a beach.

I’m only in my forties but I can remember a time when absolutely no-one cared about “VPL” or even knew what it was. It became a “thing” as a marketing tool in the very early 2000s when shops all went in on selling thong knickers as the new trend.

In the 90s we all just wore ordinary pants and didn’t stress about it at all.

Yes, it does seem like another stick to beat women with: to make a perfectly normal thing seem shameful and something that simply must be hidden.

Like the very disgusting and unthinkable idea that a woman in a private, locked public/work toilet cubicle might actually be the only person in the world ever having a poo - which decent people clearly never do unless they're men of course, in which case it's obviously fine, as men do need to poo.

Not thong ones. The french pools arent full of men in thongs.

I did see an older man in a gold thong speedo at my local pool once but that's the only time I've ever seen one and i hope to never see it again to be honest. It's somehow odder than just being naked.

A gold thing Speedo! 😂😂

Do you feel that way about women's belly rolls too?

ChicLilacSeal · 27/01/2025 08:06

I don't think that showing your bare bottom in public is elegant or in good taste, whether beach or pool. And that goes for both men and women.

I'm not much of a bikini fan, either. They weren't so popular when I was young. Everyone wore one-pieces, and there were some gorgeous ones around. You can do much more with a one-piece, design-wise, and I think they can be much more flattering than bikinis. I had one that had all this clever hidden seaming, and it gave me Marilyn Monroe curves. I think bikinis break up the eye-line too much, like when people wear cropped trousers or sleeveless tank-top styles. I think skirts and halter-necks look nicer than those two designs. And a halter-neck one-piece swimsuit...chef's kiss!

Walkaround · 27/01/2025 08:11

Don’t like it on men, don’t like it on women. Nobody needs or wants to see your arse crack.

Fully agreed OP. There's also a larger issue here - why/how have we arrived at fashion that's okay and encouraging of women to display arses but we'd be very much taken aback if men's swimwear of that nature was widely available mainstream.

I often compare boys shorts and girls shorts and wonder why - just why - are 10 year old girls offered the invitation to wear much tinier shorts than 10 year old boys.

Anyone guess?

This.

It’s not just that girls shorts are tinier. Girls clothes are much tighter too. When in the play park with my kids ( in warmer weather!) I notice that boys have loose, comfy clothing whilst the girls are all in tight Lycra leggings and shorts. One girl, about 8, even had those horrible leggings with the seam up the arse crack to display each butt cheek. Why any parent would choose that sexualised clothing for a little girl is beyond me.

That's certainly not true (the nobody wants to see your arse crack comment), many men very much want to see as much of women's arses as they can. Doesn't mean they need to be indulged obviously.

No I am not but I think exposing your bum can attract unwelcome attention from some men. I have had unwanted attention from a man when I was wearing a low top. My husband had to get the bouncer to evict him and escort us to our car. All very unpleasant and unnecessary imho

Oh great we are back to monitoring what women wear to stop "unwanted attention from a man".

Yes because I actually felt threatened by the man who would not take no for an answer even though I told him I was married and my husband was with me at the time. I blame certain men not what women are wearing. Some men are just inappropriate and shouldn’t be making comments about a woman’s body

Yes fuck that 100% - I would say the most unwanted attention I have had is wearing a school uniform. Not sure what I should have been wearing to stop that.

I highly doubt a man like this is going to be stopped by a woman's choice of clothes though.

PurpleDiva22 · 27/01/2025 09:42

Between the comments on my thong style swimsuit being compared to prostitution and pornography, being accused of being vain, an exhibitionist and subservient, being told what is comfortable on my own body, and being given out to because the menz folk and boyz must be uncomfortable, I think I'll leave it there... I won't stop wearing my swimwear of choice though! ✌️ #FreeTheCheeks

VoodooRajin · 27/01/2025 09:43

Interesting that the fervent right to bare arse gang, double down in the face of majority disapproval, like there's a direct correlation between butt baring and stubborn non confirmity

onwardsup4 · 27/01/2025 09:47

@chargeitup I'm not shaming anyone for their opinions I just don't think it makes me a "pearl clutcher" to not understand the need for whole arse on show in public swimming pool. I understand for the beach/tanning.
You seem offended and surprised to learn the majority of people aren't over joyed at the sight of your bum?

GreenYellowBrown · 27/01/2025 10:00

I can’t get too worked up about it, although I still can’t work out why people want to wear these things. I wouldn’t want to be out and about with a permanent wedgie!

That man would have made comments regardless of what you were wearing, harassment and unwanted sexual attention from men has absolutely nothing to do with what you're wearing.

sweetpickle2 · 27/01/2025 11:30

Pretty gross that in 2025 we're still blaming men's predatory behaviour on women's choice of clothing.

I've been sexually assaulted wearing jogging bottoms, a baggy jumper and a long coat before. Predatory men don't need to see your arse to ogle it.

MugsyBalonz · 27/01/2025 11:52

Exactly.

Fir anyone who doubts it, I once again draw your attention to this exhibition (trigger warning: discussions of sexual assault and rape)

To those posters who say a bum is just skin like any other part of the body & women should feel free to let it all hang out. I wonder if they think the same about a the skin of a man's testicles. If a man walked about with the skin hanging out of the side of his too small speedos (Ive witnessed that) that should be ok because its just skin. As far as most people are concerned walking about with a bare bum is as much of a public indecency as a man walking about with the 'skin' of his testicles out. The vast majority of people don't wish to be subjected to either.

VoodooRajin · 27/01/2025 12:23

If it's just skin, would they let their 12 year old daughters wear them

LivesinLondon2000 · 27/01/2025 12:32

@VoodooRajin
agree that it’s not ‘just skin’ otherwise it wouldn’t provoke such a reaction. I wonder if people felt the same way when mini-skirts first came out - that seeing actual legs was provocative and sexualised - I expect so.
The thing is that there’s no-where to go after this is there? Other than just full nudity?

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 27/01/2025 13:00

Because patchy white bits look messy. I like looking even all over. I don't like having massive white patches. My dh couldn't care less. He is just happy to see my body but personally I like looking even all over. This is why I self tan all over. I don't just self tan the bits other people see

But do you really see your arse very often? Probably not unless you're contorting yourself in front of a mirror. Which means you're doing it so that the general public see an evenly tanned arse. Judging by this thread the general public don't want to see your arse at all, having it evenly tanned does not improve their experience.
