To think bums should be covered in a public pool?

I may be being unreasonable and I’m just old and out of touch… took my kids swimming today at our local public pool and there was a lady wearing one of those swimming costumes that is basically a thong at the back? I saw lots of them in the beach during the summer which I kind of understand as it helps you get a very high cut tan/eliminates tan lines but I felt a bit weird seeing one in an indoor pool? Not sure where boundaries lie…? Happy to be told IABU but wondered what others think?

Exactly — that’s the entire point! It’s not about comfort at all: it’s about how the arse looks to men. If it was all just about comfort and making your own free choices about what to wear, women would wear one whatever they thought their arses looked like.

Would they?

My sister didn't wear shorts in the summer for years because she was self conscious of her leg veins.

She's fucking gorgeous and it's insane that she would be self conscious of this to me, but she was.

Women often wear things to cover their body because they are self conscious regardless of what is more comfortable or not.

i agree but other people don’t seem to mind about wearing see through leggings. I saw a young girl wearing some the other day that were very revealing. I myself wear leggings but they are usually dark and not at all revealing

I have no issue with them... almost everyone has part of their arse cheeks out in swimwear, unless they are wearing the modesty suits.

I don't wear thong swimwear but thong underwear is much more comfortable than regular big pants... I can always feel the material sat on my cheeks and it feels very weird... but I have been wearing thongs for about 30 years so it's what you get used to I suppose!

Do you not wear trousers then?
If you do you will feel the material of your trousers on your cheeks instead.

I'm saying even if women find it more comfortable they might not continue as they get older.

Maybe they's why older women typically don't wear them?

Although I've seen a couple older women wear them in my day.

Most people aren't even noticing.

I think you will find they are, it's really difficult not to. If you think "most people" don't notice then you are spectacularly naive.

SamPM · 27/01/2025 04:50

I don't even understand the point of them at the beach. Who cares if you have no tan lines? It looks uncomfortable and most people do not have great backsides to be flaunting them.

SittingNextToIt · 26/01/2025 16:40

Fully agreed OP. There's also a larger issue here - why/how have we arrived at fashion that's okay and encouraging of women to display arses but we'd be very much taken aback if men's swimwear of that nature was widely available mainstream.

I often compare boys shorts and girls shorts and wonder why - just why - are 10 year old girls offered the invitation to wear much tinier shorts than 10 year old boys.

Anyone guess?

The constant sexualization of girls. I thought by now we would be done with this but it's getting worse, largely thanks to sm.

onwardsup4 · 27/01/2025 04:55

Took my kids to a total wipeout type thing in the summer. It involved a lot of standing around before hand the safety induction took about half an hour. Handful of women were in thongs it just looked so stupid I felt embarrassed for them.
Looking to find photos of my kids to buy on the website after and one woman where she'd flew down the slide and flew off legs completely akimbo was a photo of her arse could see everything. No idea why anyone would choose to do that to themselves 😂
Complete cringe and also applies to public pool as well. You look stupid and I don't feel ashamed to think it and the vast majority of others will be thinking it

The pearl clutching on this thread! It’s just a bum.

And anyone who thinks non-thong swimwear magically contains all farts and bodily secretions is seriously deluded.

SamPM · 27/01/2025 05:00

Cherry8809 · 26/01/2025 16:57

I wouldn’t wear them myself but I wouldn’t care in the slightest if someone else did.

You might feel differently if a huge and unattractive bare arse suddenly rises up in front of you and bends over. Ugh!

Lifelover16 · 27/01/2025 05:02

Thong = thrush highway
apart from looking hideous

I love a thong bikini! So I’m in the minority here. Admittedly it’s not something I’d wear to an indoor pool, because the sole reason is minimal tan lines. Generally wear a sarong so it’s only obvious whilst sunbathing or too and from the pool.

The comments gave me a chuckle so I’ll address a couple for some wider perspective:

’I don’t want to see someone else’s arse cheeks’.

  • Don’t look then! I think men with big boobs out and their belly hanging over the top of their trunks is far worse.
‘It’s not pleasant or hygienic’
  • For me, seeing the amount of gammy feet round swimming pools on holiday is far worse. Bum cheeks are no more infectious whether they’re covered by a small piece of material or not. Some of them toes though 🤮
  • The amount of people that wee in public swimming pools, is far less hygienic in my opinion. But even then, that’s why pools have chlorine.
‘I wonder why anyone would walk around like that’
  • As mentioned above, because I care more about the tan lines than other people’s opinions 😂 My assumption is most people are so self conscious about their own bodies round the pool, they’re paying zero attention to mine.

Why do you care about tan lines on your arse? Tan lines on shoulders I get which is why we went topless back in the day, but tanlines on your butt, really? That's sounds like a lame excuse.

I wouldn't.

It's just an ass.

Most people aren't super models at the beach.

It's not like a full cover bottom makes everyone into Jessica Alba.

Stop trying to shame people with normal opinions on not wanting to see your whole arse at the swimming pool 😂🙄

I've never seen a man in a thong at a public swimming pool. On the beach in Spain last summer I saw a couple of older men wearing them (Peter Stringfellow kinda guys), but I don't remember seeing a young man wear one anywhere.

I swim at an outdoor public pool in the summer and there is a middle aged bloke who shows up every year in his thong. He is the most unbearable poser, always taking selfies of himself prancing around much to our amusement. And yes, his saggy butt desperately needs covering up.

I just think it looks a bit daft having a white arse with a tan line cutting across it. I feel more confident in myself having an even tan.

’That sounds like a lame excuse’
I wasn’t trying to impress anyone, it’s just fact. And I care more about my tanned arse than people on the internet / round a pools opinion 😂

lifesrichpageant · 27/01/2025 05:43

It never stops being shocking to me!
And at the same time I admire young people for letting it all hang out. Might just be a generational difference so I tend to keep my mouth shut and just look away :-)

No I am not but I think exposing your bum can attract unwelcome attention from some men. I have had unwanted attention from a man when I was wearing a low top. My husband had to get the bouncer to evict him and escort us to our car. All very unpleasant and unnecessary imho

chargeitup · 27/01/2025 07:10

@Juliagreeneyes

That was very late 90s, not early 90s!

Who said they were early 90s? 1994 is not early 90s.
Kate Moss wore bumsters (extreme low rise) in The Face magazine early 1993 so it's quite conceivable that @MugsyBalonz mother got some thongs in 1994.

Thongs were around way before bumster jeans anyway. They have been around for thousands of years

In 1995 Victoria secrets had models in thongs and monies Lewinsky flashed her thong at Clinton.

Whilst you merrily shame people for holding a different opinion to you.
The irony

Yogaatsunrise · 27/01/2025 07:12

It might be ‘more comfortable’ to wear no clothes at all, but most people do. Public decency mostly. The women that wear this stuff seem to be so lacking in basic consideration and decency for themselves more than anyone else.

They are usually trailing behind their fully clothed men creating a scene out of Star Wars. It looks subservient whichever way you look at it, she is objectifying herself immediately and the total loss of modesty and decency reflects very badly on her.
I can’t imagine she is treated with respect or conveys any authority. Just a play bunny there bending over as a figure of ridicule. I feel deeply uncomfortable the way they are openly judged, ridiculed and mocked. Why would you ever do that to yourself? It’s almost a form of self harm.

Because patchy white bits look messy. I like looking even all over. I don't like having massive white patches. My dh couldn't care less. He is just happy to see my body but personally I like looking even all over. This is why I self tan all over. I don't just self tan the bits other people see

Most people don't have model figures. They have rolls of belly fat , stretch marks and cellulite. Do you suggest they all wear a burkhini? Cover up all the 'unpleasant' bits?
