Just that! I had such a great run and now I seem to have hit a wall. Do you use the same one every time? Do you ever use pen and paper alongside? It's cheeky I know I'm being unreasonable I'm also just curious!

Another

TianasBayou · 27/01/2025 08:01

Another one that uses a word from or inspired by the micro crossword. Too easy otherwise.

Marylou2 · 27/01/2025 08:04

IRATE or sometimes CLOUD. Love it when a random word just appears in my head and I'm incredibly luck with it .

BloominNora · 27/01/2025 08:05

Adieu and then Storm then if there aren't enough clues to what it might be something with a ch in it (changes depending on what letters I get from the first two)

Mama_bear · 27/01/2025 08:22

Penis, then froth. It makes me laugh.

Penis, then froth. It makes me laugh.

I’m clearly a smutty teenager at heart as it made me laugh too. It also meant I got it in 3 today!

bridgetreilly · 27/01/2025 10:40

ALIEN TOURS

then, if I still have no idea

FUDGY CHIMP/CHAMP/CHOMP/CHUMP

Linsco · 27/01/2025 10:41

I start with beach and moist everyday to test out the vowels.

LadyDanburysHat · 27/01/2025 10:44

Always RAISE, if no letter move onto MOUTH

Mama2many73 · 27/01/2025 10:46

I change my first word every day ( id be bired doing gge same every day)but I often use house, round and heart in the game depending what letters come up, or if first 2 guesses give nothing.
I have once gotten it on first guess and it wasn't even my choice. I play just after midnight when I go to bed. Asked DH to give me a word, we joked 'what if it's THE word' when I said it was dh didn't believe me, had to show him.

Squirrelsnut · 27/01/2025 10:49

EARLY.
I have a good hit rate

HansGrubersSuit · 27/01/2025 10:51

Adieu then Short

Funderthighs · 27/01/2025 10:53

I use IRATE and it has served me well.

CasperGutman · 27/01/2025 10:56

Soare. It's an obsolete word meaning a young hawk. I suppose "arose" would cover the same letters, but I have a vague feeling "soare" gets the letters in more likely positions. If the opening word gives me little or no info I follow it up with "unity", which covers the rest of the vowels (including y) and a couple of other common consonants.

ETA: just tried today's Mumsnet Guessword using this approach and got it in three, so feeling pretty happy with that. I won't post a screenshot to avoid spoilers for others!

GoingToInfinity · 27/01/2025 11:02

I always start with ARISE and then go for PLUTO if I don't get any letters correct.

@Solmum1964 Funny thing, I had a streak of 301 and it literally disappeared overnight. I had absolutely nothing, no record of anything.Contacted NY times as I had registered, and they couldn’t trace it. Had to start again from scratch. Is there a limit I wonder.

My stats show the 301 streak. I just failed to guess a word - one of those tricky ones where I had 4 out of 5 letters in the right place but loads of options for the final letter!

Why do some people use a starter word with a Q in it? It's really unlikely to come up and if there is no U, there is no Q. So why not try a word with a U first and you can exclude Q straight away if it's not there

Coloursofthewind2 · 27/01/2025 19:02

House is my starter word. If it doesn't give me anything then I do paint second to cover all vowels.
