Am I a far right extremist?

1000 replies

Isitme245 · 25/01/2025 11:30

I had a conversation with my best friend of 25 years the other day and she called me a far right extremist and how my views are scary, dangerous and 'nazi coded'
I was really shocked as I didn't think any of what I said was bad. I'm not a particularly avid supporter of any political party and very much keep opinions to myself. She's very supportive of labour and anti trump and always has been. Usually when she asks me my opinions I just don't want to get into it but I did the other night and now I feel bad.

Here's the breakdown:

  • she sent me an article and told me that Nigel Farage is going to ban abortion eventually if he wins an election. I read the article and pointed out he only suggested lowering the abortion cut off date to 22 weeks (not 24 as it is now). I told her it wasn't the end of the world and it's reasonable if you read his reasons. I also made the point that men shouldn't really be getting involved in abortion law but that what he said wasn't the end of the world.
  • she asked me about immigration and I said that it's great but that we should be prioritising skilled immigrants and have stronger immigration laws. She also asked about asylum seekers and hotels and I said that we should have stronger laws about monitoring people and collecting documentation when people arrive.
  • she sent me and asked about Elon Musk's Nazi salute and I said I didn't interpret it that way
  • I said that immigrants who rape or murder should be deported.

To me this feels really reasonable and not over the top but she really attacked me for it? Now I feel really awkward and uncomfortable talking to her. Is this far right??

I would say those saying its a nazi salute have utterly edited it out of context.

Unless you think the nazi's salute, when done by actual nazis in the Third Reich, was done in a joyous moment and intended to convey heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the public.

They also seem to have edited out of their knowledge bank that all of Musk's physical movements are awkward and jerky and stiff. It would have been remarkable indeed if this one moment had not been.

Musk knew exactly what he was doing and how it would look.

It would have been remarkable indeed if this one moment had not been

It was two "moments".

Welcome to MN btw.

Totally agree. The way the term is thrown around today is insulting to those who suffered at the hands of the actual nazis. It disgusts me when I hear people calling others ‘nazis’. Unless the person is putting children to their death in gas chambers sold as showers, or experimenting on disabled people, for example, just a taster, then they are not nazis.

Do you think Nazis just popped out of the ground at started doing these unimaginable things? No.

It happened slowly. Fear, propaganda, othering and hate made people believe they were doing the right thing and that's exactly what's happening now.

Why don't you just own your views? You don't need a load of random people telling you what you should think.
You need to get off that fence.

This. Opinions are just that, no more, no less 🤷‍♀️

OP - just go with your own opinions. Those from randoms off of a net forum are irrelevant. 🤷‍♀️

Beeloux · 25/01/2025 16:46

As someone who has Jewish heritage, I don’t believe it was a Nazi salute and also agree with all the points you do.
Personally I believe the abortion limit is far too late in this country and should be lowered like it is in mainland Europe (unless for medical reasons/birth defects).

fairycakes1234 · 25/01/2025 16:46

So if an immigrant raped someone they shouldn't be deported?? And if you think they should then you're far right, this is whats wrong in the world!!

Lavenderflower · 25/01/2025 16:48

I would say you right wing, bordering on the far right because of the Elon Musk comment.

🙄 Don’t patronise me. I know that’s not how ‘they started’. That is not the point. It is inappropriate, to say the least, to call people nazis in the way that is so common / widespread these days.

But do you know how it started…….?

Have you visited the camps? Have you clearly understood the history of it.

it started, with people like the far right, shouting in their echo chambers.

Then look what happened….

🙄 Don’t patronise me. I know that’s not how ‘they started’. That is not the point. It is inappropriate, to say the least, to call people nazis in the way that is so common / widespread these days.

But we’re not discussing a person who simply has opposing views to the centre or left.

I agree that calling someone a Nazi simply because they’re just right of centre is OTT. But no one is doing that here.

EM is championing a neo-Nazi extreme far right fascist party into power in Germany. Then he repeatedly does a Nazi salute as he thanks the crowd at the inauguration of the leader of the free world after buying the election. He then takes no responsibility, offers no meaningful apology or shows any respect for the ghastly historical significance of that gesture.

No one is flippantly throwing the word Nazi around here. I know it’s hard for us all to stomach but sadly this word is being used in this context for good reason.

This such as interesting take.

It seems the Jewish community have been very quiet about this compared Kanye's comments.

Have you watched the video or only seen this photograph?
Because the video shows the whole gesture not just this bit of propaganda.

And I’m left wing but I can’t see the point of ridiculous accusations when there are real problems to be dealt with.

Yes, I’ve seen it, have you? He clearly does 2 nazi salutes.

I personally don't disagree with a lot of what you've said. I think it's how normal, measured humans think (but are now too scared to voice!) But you'll likely be ripped apart on here.
I'm pretty centrist in my politics and, from what I've experienced, especially online, is that the 'extremists' are firmly far LEFT.

I second this

Thirded - especially the point about nuance

OP I don't think your views are extreme though I don't agree with you on the abortion limit being reduced but I do agree with you that men should not get a say.

dynamiccactus · 25/01/2025 17:06

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 25/01/2025 14:40

I'm more concerned you didn't recognise what Musk did as a Nazi salute.

Suggesting your knowledge around the issues facing America right now is severely lacking. Making excuses for a nazi as "I didn't recognise....blah blah blah" is worrying.

I don't think it was unambiguously a Nazi salute, but maybe that was the whole point. Get publicity - whether negative or positive - for doing something that could be construed that way.

There was a neo-Nazi/white supremacist organisation in South Africa which had a three pronged version of the swastika so maybe it's their version of the Nazi salute.

HumHU3 · 25/01/2025 17:06

MaryWhitehouseExperienced · 25/01/2025 14:57

I'm interested that Nigel Farage is preoccupied with abortion rights. Why? Is it part of a policy for dealing with the pressure on the NHS? If so, what else is he offering? Apart from blaming the people who come on the boats for every damn thing that's wrong with the country.

Take a look at some of the groups he’s taking money from, who are also funding anti abortion groups in the UK.

You could certainly say that about any political party.

Isitme245 · 25/01/2025 11:36

I'm not sure but when watching it my mind didn't automatically go 'Nazi'
This is what I told her

How on earth could you not think it? Genuinely curious.

I’ve just assumed everyone who’s saying it’s not a Nazi salute is secretly a Nazi but don’t want to admit it…

DodoTired · 25/01/2025 17:14

mistymorning12 · 25/01/2025 13:46

i completely agree you all your views and think they’re normal and sensible.

a ‘Hitler’ salute has an outstretched arm in from of the person doing it, not to the side. Although I think the guy is a twat.

There are two ways to do it. Watch the current Nazi parties doing it EXACTLY like he does.

the problem probably is that most people haven’t seen enough films about Nazis so they don’t recognise it, because they’ve seen couple of photos in a school book and Schindler’s list once

You’ve not followed the post I was responding to. It wasn’t about Musk, specifically.
