Am I a far right extremist?

1000 replies

Isitme245 · 25/01/2025 11:30

I had a conversation with my best friend of 25 years the other day and she called me a far right extremist and how my views are scary, dangerous and 'nazi coded'
I was really shocked as I didn't think any of what I said was bad. I'm not a particularly avid supporter of any political party and very much keep opinions to myself. She's very supportive of labour and anti trump and always has been. Usually when she asks me my opinions I just don't want to get into it but I did the other night and now I feel bad.

Here's the breakdown:

  • she sent me an article and told me that Nigel Farage is going to ban abortion eventually if he wins an election. I read the article and pointed out he only suggested lowering the abortion cut off date to 22 weeks (not 24 as it is now). I told her it wasn't the end of the world and it's reasonable if you read his reasons. I also made the point that men shouldn't really be getting involved in abortion law but that what he said wasn't the end of the world.
  • she asked me about immigration and I said that it's great but that we should be prioritising skilled immigrants and have stronger immigration laws. She also asked about asylum seekers and hotels and I said that we should have stronger laws about monitoring people and collecting documentation when people arrive.
  • she sent me and asked about Elon Musk's Nazi salute and I said I didn't interpret it that way
  • I said that immigrants who rape or murder should be deported.

To me this feels really reasonable and not over the top but she really attacked me for it? Now I feel really awkward and uncomfortable talking to her. Is this far right??

Your friend is bonkers. You're just a normal person with views that the majority in the UK hold.

I'd agree with that.

VickyEadieofThigh · 25/01/2025 11:40

Indeed. It looked entirely like one to me. And he took the time to do it twice.

Yep. That’s where OP lost me as well. Making excuses for a Hitlergruß (two, actually!!) has covert nazi - or at least apologist - written all over it…

OneWittyLemonCat · 25/01/2025 12:20

Fair enough. I only made one point and you’re extrapolating a fair bit from that - economic damage. Brexit has provably caused this to the UK, even Farage admits it (although it’s no his fault in any shapes or form)

Fair enough! I think most of the damage is to NI and is caused by France - Macron is on record as saying the UK should be punished for Brexit. There are days when I wish I was French tbh.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan called those who didn’t agree with the London ULEZ expansion a far right extremist and a Nazi supporter. It’s lost all meaning it seems.

Truth is what's lost meaning, as your post clearly shows. He accused them of "joining hands" with the far right.

Mr Khan said he found it “unacceptable” that “some of those with legitimate objections joining hands with someone outside part of a far-right group, who are ... let's be frank, let's call a spade a spade. Some of those outside are part of the far-right, some are Covid deniers, some are vaccine deniers and some are Tories.”

I can't think how you could possibly have got that so mixed up.

Noodlehen · 25/01/2025 14:21

Isitme245 · 25/01/2025 13:30

I just wanted to figure out what my political position is based on my views as I'm not sure. I'm not interested in continuing the discussion with her so no I wouldn't say anything

And what does it matter what your views are labelled as? If they’re your opinions they’re your opinions, you wouldn’t (I hope) suddenly change your mind because someone labelled you. That would be very fickle.

Noodlehen · 25/01/2025 14:22

Although that conversation seems stilted and unnatural, not one I could imagine having with one of my friends.

HumHU3 · 25/01/2025 14:22

Yeah that’s really concerning isn’t it? We definitely need to be more vigilant for that type of thing.

Also it’s scary how many people are taking the abortion comments at face value and not questioning why he’s suddenly raising this topic? Who funds him, what are their motivations? Considering 90+% abortions take place before 12 weeks it’s very odd, trying to give the impression (as we’ve seen in the US) there are tons of careless women aborting half way through pregnancy for the hell of it.

Frustration at people not asking deeper questions, following the money, being vigilant citizens etc probably leads to name calling.

NiftyKoala · 25/01/2025 14:23

Just don't talk politics with your friend.

I can see a goat and think it’s a zebra but that doesn’t make me correct.

It’s shocking to hear anyone who describes themselves as a socialist and a feminist agree with Trump’s declaration that there are only two genders (not sexes) and put that into law. Lives will be lost as a direct result.

With friends like you, eh?

I am shocked anyone who calls themself a feminist supports the idea that men can be women (or vice versa). There are only two sexes, male and female, they are immutable and defined by their reproductive capacity: women/females produce large gametes (or have/had the potential to), men/males produce small gametes (or have/had the potential to). I don't see why that is a shocking belief in a socialist, surely socialists are for scientific accuracy?
Re: Trump, I think the consensus is that he chose 'genders' rather than 'sexes' in his speech (but not in the Executive Order) because of US prudery around the word 'sex'. For the record, he obviously meant sex, because that is what he ordered in the EO.

You’re fine, OP. Your friend sounds batshit. Musk supports Israel. It wasn’t a Nazi salute. He was throwing his heart into the crowd, metaphorically speaking. However, woke leftists somehow think supporting Israel makes you a Nazi now. Everything is ass about face.

He supports Tommy Robinson and the far right AFD in Germany. He amplifies antisemitism on X. His response to the outrage of his actions was to tweet a load of holocaust puns, not clarify or apologise.

If it walks like a Nazi, talks like a Nazi and does Nazi salutes, it's probably a Nazi.🤷‍♀️

@TankFlyBossWalkJamNittyGrittyIAmFromAMidSizeCity
Anything more than the initial lowering to 22 weeks would feel weird to me. If the case is that 24 week old babies can now be viable outside the womb, it feels reasonable to lower it to 22 weeks. I'd be worried and strongly question the motivations of lowering it any more.

Curtis Zy-Keith Means is the world's most premature surviving baby, born at 21 weeks and one day. He was born in July 2020 at UAB Hospital in the United States.

Babies are becoming viable at earlier gestations as technology advances. I don't think taking advice from Nigel Farage on where the line should be drawn makes sense.

As with sharks! But I don't think OP has an opinion on Musk (as do I not, really, not having seen what he did) because she did not see the gesture. Not having an opinion is fine.

TankFlyBossWalkJamNittyGrittyIAmFromAMidSizeCity · 25/01/2025 12:26

I didn't say it was.

I said this is just the start of a slippery slope of getting abortion rights severely lowered or removed entirely.

Fair enough. Not sure it is a slippery slope, though.

Gettingbysomehow · 25/01/2025 14:30

Some people just get completely hysterical if everybody doesn't necessarily hold the same views as them and demand they take themselves off Facebook and so on ad nausea. It's very tedious.
I'm liberal to left and couldn't care less if friends are tory or support Nigel Farage. Everyone has a vote regardless.
I've only ever taken someone off my social media once when they posted a load of racist crap directly onto my page. We are no longer friends.
He knew my siblings are mixed race and did it to offend. I can't have that.
He needs to keep his penis in his pants.

Grammarnut · 25/01/2025 14:30

OneWittyLemonCat · 25/01/2025 12:28

It very much is a far right aim, just look at Roe v Wade in the US. They had no plans, it was settled law, then their friendly Supreme Court judges repealed it. The whole right is all about birth rates and replacement theories, which blocking access to Abortion is very much a part of it.

Anti-Global-majority-ists, I guess. Very difficult, but does not apply in the UK. And I wish Farage would emigrate if he likes the US system so much.

Icannoteven · 25/01/2025 14:31

I would say that your views on Elon Musk’s nazi salute are a huge red flag. Combined with your evident distrust of immigrants/ foreigners……it’s not a good look. It’s looking a bit fascist.

The hypocrisy here is astounding.

You see some males as women and are upset for them that they are being denied their 'lived experience' and told to stay out of women's single sex spaces and sports!

It's not a shocking belief at all. Most people believe in biological reality, both left and right. Gender Critical feminism is very leftwing. The Morning Star newspaper opposes TWAW beliefs.

That the left don't believe in biological realism is a lie told by right whingers who use the trans shitshow as a weapon in their culture wars.

Grammarnut · 25/01/2025 14:33

MonkeyToHeaven · 25/01/2025 12:59

Who owns our wealth and resources and who controls our access to it? It's not lefties, & it's not immigrants is it?

Who owns our press and our social media, our land, our natural resources, our means of production etc?

It's unsurprising that a significant % of the population have been convinced the blame for our woes isn't a direct consequence of economic policies designed to further the interests of those with power and control.

Hitler blamed the left and Jews, Mussolini came to power off the back of violent attacks on the left and with backing from the King, liberal politicians, landowners and the capitalist class.

The parallels are so clear, it's embarrassing that so many people continue to refuse to face them.

Trump isn't Hitler, he's Mussolini, who the Pope claimed had been sent by Providence to deliver Italy from liberalism and religious error.

I agree. Our woes are blamed on 'others' in order for those in power to hold on to power. I'm not sure how we get round it - revolution is a) bloody and b) currently not on the cards because of general disempowerment of ordinary people. This may change, of course.

So why did the Democrats under Biden on the first day of his presidency remove women's rights to fair sport by EO?

@Grammarnut " I am a second wave feminist but have become comfortable with the support for abortion on demand, for example"

Puzzled by this....

Sorry, so am I puzzled. Did not read before posting (tired, dog needed feeding etc). I have become less comfortable with support for abortion on demand, for example (I edited it to be more grammatically correct, I think, and forgot to add 'less').

Not far right at all. There's lot's of common sense in what you said.

But even if you were, that would be as acceptable and valid as being far left.

It’s very unreasonable not to recognise Musk’s action as the clear Nazi salute that it was. Even Musk is not disputing that that’s what it was.

Otherwise I would categorise your opinions as pretty right wing but not hardline far right (as in, I would not call you a Nazi on the basis of these views). You’re far from the centre, but also still well short of being a Nazi.

Oh I didn’t realise he’d admitted it, where did you read that? I’m off to google.

You dont know he is supporting a nazi party in Germany? And that his dad had nazi connections?

His dad was a representative of the PFP, a party standing against the apartheid regime in South Africa.
Errol Musk accused his ex wife’s father of having Nazi connections.
Elon’s maternal grandfather.

Cant find any evidence of Errol Musk having Nazi connections and am more horrified that he had a dc with his stepdaughter who he’d known since she was 4.
