Traitors on BBC News - really?

kinkytoes · 25/01/2025 08:32

Two of the top six stories on the BBC news website are about Traitors.

🤦🏻‍♀️

Disclaimer - I don't watch it, but presumably those who do will have either seen it last night or be avoiding spoilers!!

Traitors on BBC News - really?

I love the Traitors but admit it’s not exactly news is it? It’s reality tv show. They don’t talk about Love Island or I’m a celeb on the bbc news…. it was actually on the 10 o’clock news on tv!

I kind of don’t care about it being on the news website but on the actual tv news is bonkers

And yes it will be partly promoting another bbc show but they shouldn’t do that. What next? A summary of country file on the news every Sunday evening or saying who won Bargain Hunt?

Edited

Country file and Bargain Hunt aren’t watched by 10 million viewers.

ITV website, by contrast, does have an entertainment subpage on its news section, separate from its main news page. The bbc doesnt do this, it just lumps everything together, but tags them by category.

porridgebath · 25/01/2025 09:19

If people read the articles you deem more newsworthy then there'd be more of those

noblegiraffe · 25/01/2025 09:21

Looking at the Most Read section, not only do people want to read two articles about The Traitors, they also want to take a quiz and see if they would make a good Traitor.

There we go then. People read it they're going to make it

MsJuniper · 25/01/2025 09:23

I watched the final last night and have spent an hour this morning reading all the articles and threads about it I have come across. I expect the editors knew lots of people were addicted and keen to pore over it.

Looking at the app, the main article is the 4th most read, the others have drifted off the front page already.

crumblingschools · 25/01/2025 09:23

Isn’t it nice to have something to read that isn’t all doom and gloom. They’ll have news about the Oscars when they are held, will you complain about that too? I’m sure they had a headline about Barbie film when that was released.
Many people were talking about Traitors

ATuinTheGreat · 25/01/2025 09:33

I don’t mind it being on the website, and I love The Traitors but it was on the actual Ten O’Clock News (or whatever time it was actually on) last night, and immediately said who won as well. That was a) not news and b) a massive spoiler if you hadn’t watched it live.

crumblingschools · 25/01/2025 09:47

@ATuinTheGreat they’ll announce things like Eurovision or Strictly winners and winners of sporting events on tv news too. If a programme is popular and people are talking about it then they’ll it would seem odd to completely ignore it.

What falls in the category of news for you?

Nitgel · 25/01/2025 09:56

I bet the bbc journalist cringe when they have yo cover tv programmes during the.most dramatic news in the world happening at the moment.

BananaNirvana · 25/01/2025 09:59

I didn’t watch it last night, turned on R4 this morning literally at the time they gave away the winner - absolute fuckers. It’s hardly unlikely that lots of us will have missed watching last night as it’s a Friday 🙄.

I don't think the journalists writing about Gaza are often called on to write entertainment stories.

The BBC is a massive organisation with a massive staff, they can and do do both.

Kebabbky · 25/01/2025 10:10

Traitors isn’t news worthy and it never fails to amaze me the amount of people who think that shows like this and Strictly are entertainment!

Nitgel · 25/01/2025 10:11

Well the news editors then. Ooh the bbc are a massive organisation who knew 😂

FiveFoxes · 25/01/2025 10:13

I agree OP. I am a massive fan of the Traitors - I've watched all the series (Inc those in other countries) and watched uncloaked. I read the threads on MN etc. One article on BBC news app would be enough. Two is too much - they are taking up space of actual news, especially when they are both placed right near the top.

The really bad thing though is the Daily Mail's front page picture of the final (as seen on the papers on BBC news app). It's a spoiler, so I won't go into it too much, but it's missing something...

That is the point though, they always do both. Any day you choose, go on the front page and there'll be a mix of serious and light-hearted stories. Often it's the lighter stuff that lasts in Most Read.

Bloody hell that cover is mad

WinterBones · 25/01/2025 10:18

it was on the 6 o'clock news last night, now that IS ridiculous.

Choccyscofffy · 25/01/2025 10:19

kinkytoes · 25/01/2025 08:38

My issue is in the OP.

Those who watch it will either have seen it or be avoiding spoilers.

So why's it on the main bloody news? TWICE!

Yes I know it's BBC promotion but it annoys me. That's not what news is supposed to be for.

People read news articles about TV shows they’re watching, what a shocker.

What a ridiculous post.

CrushingOnRubies · 25/01/2025 10:21

So a big show for the bbc is being promoted on a bbc website.

Yabu

The Daily Mail cover is on the BBC News app?

I’m so confused, could you post a screen shot with spoiler warning?

Tamboureeny · 25/01/2025 10:25

Bbc always have 'entertainment' articles, nothing new.

Choccyscofffy · 25/01/2025 10:28

Here’s what I see on the BBC News app. Maybe I’m distracted by the weird BBC grammar. Is ‘her grandfather drove trains to there’ correct grammar? Confused

What falls in the category of news for you?

Sporting events - yes - in the sport news part, unless major like Andy Murray wins Wimbledon when should be main news.

Eurovision - it’s an actual international live event/contest, so I’m happy enough with that being “news” as is a real actual thing that just happened.

Strictly - no, I don’t think that is news, and I wouldn’t have thought it would get on ITV news. In a way you could say “what’s the difference between that and Eurovision?” But Strictly is just celebrities on a TV contest. At least though it has actually just happened.

The Traitors is just a TV show and it’s not even live - the events of The Traitors final actually happened months ago and it’s been edited down, presented in a certain way and just now put on TV. It’s not “news.”

That’s just my opinion though!
