I haven't seen anything in articles I have read about Axel Rudakubana today about a mental health assessment. His behaviour is so extreme, that it is difficult not to suspect he is suffering from an untreated mental health condition. Does anyone else think that mental illness may be at the root of his horrific crimes?

I think he is terribly disordered. And I was amazed he was found fit to stand trial and I wondered whether this was a political move to avoid the gammons shouting “you wouldn’t let a white kid off” etc. I feel so bad for all the parents, including his.

lovinglaughingliving · 24/01/2025 01:10

He's obviously not wired quite right and again the whole nature/nurture debate comes into play. We have no idea about his childhood ACES or any other factors. I feel for his parents and how utterly bereft they must be, it seems as though this is another systematic failure of the system to me.
I am glad he is in prison for a very very long time. I hope the other prisoners deal with him suitably, and the prison officers turn a blind eye. There is a special place reserved in hell for those who harm the most vulnerable of our society.
I also hope that those affected by this tragedy can find peace.

Oh I don’t know. The people sharing his prison will probably get to him. Normally I’d condemn that, but not in this case.

Oh I’m actively, nay FERVENTLY hoping he gets “got at” in prison. Ditto those pieces of shit involved in Sara Sharif’s murder. The older I’m getting, the harder I’m getting.

Sadly im past caring.

He stabbed a child over 100 times.

Something must have happened to him in the period between the smiley happy picture of him as a 13 yesr old in school uniform and the crazed, deranged hollow look now...

Why did they keep posting that photo up until the trial though.

The timeline I saw earlier - reported that he claimed to have been subject to racist bullying in school, became anxious about attending and started carrying a knife to school - this was around the time he contacted Childline aged 14

IDK if there's more to it than that but the call to Childline was mentioned as a mitigating factor by the judge

Mitigating 🤮

People bullying him mitigated him stabbing someone half the age he was when he was bullied and felt the need to call childlike over 100 times. Righto.

There was a whole 1000 post thread about that yesterday so probably don't need to go there again?

No - seeking help from Childline was the mitigating factor

Yes that's what he claims. The boy he attacked was in a younger year group and claims he never knew him. That he had no idea who he was and had never spoken to him. I think it was all in his head tbh.

Most people seem to think the judge was pretty good - even twitter has been full of praise for him

Don't you think it was a good idea for him to seek help for his knife carrying and murderous thoughts?

It was possibly a point at which the tragic attack could have been prevented 4 years beforehand

That's not what Childline says

But it will hopefully become clearer when the enquiry takes place

BeethovenNinth · 24/01/2025 01:46

He phoned childline asking for advice about his feelings of wanting to kill. Why do that? Presumably at some point he knew it was still wrong and he was stumbling towards a place he didn’t want to go

what tipped him there? Drugs? Propaganda? We need to know - we cannot let these crimes just be allowed to happen

But the point remains. He was bullied by someone at 14, so he killed someone half his age. This isn't mitigation. It's anything they can think of to deflect from the fact that this guy was a danger and nothing was done.

Gammons? Is there really any need for that?

Agreed. I have no sympathy after what we've seen in this trial, and no mitigation should have been allowed.

LondonLawyer · 24/01/2025 01:50

He will have been assessed a lot during his time in remand, and his lawyers will also have made sure he was tested to see if he was criminally insane. He clearly didn't meet the criteria for being "not guilty by reason of insanity". But this lad is plainly really not OK. Very probable he will spend the next few decades in Broadmoor.

There really wasn't any mitigation offered - about 2 minutes, I think, and that essentially said he was a normal child and everything went wrong when he was about 13, nobody knows why.

The judge has to , its his job.

The rest of us are struggling to find sympathy for someone who stabbed a child over 100 times.

I was referring to the childline comments. There seems to be a determination to remind us about his childhood, when actually he was days off being a man.
