Horrible interaction in New Look

lanbro · 23/01/2025 20:12

Just bought something in New Look, interaction at the till as follows:

Till operator: what's your email for your receipt?
Me: no thanks, I'd like a paper copy please
TO: it's a digital receipt
Me: I know, but I'd prefer a paper copy please
TO: what, you don't have an email address?!
Me: of course, but I'd like a paper copy
TO: fine, it'll take a minute. Why don't you want to give me your email?
Me: I get 100s of spam emails, I don't need anymore thanks
TO: OK, no need to get angry!
Me: I'm not angry but I'm cross that you're being so persistent when I said I didn't want to (may have sounded louder than intended)
TO: don't speak to me like that! That's it I've had enough, don't talk to me!

I said fine, I'd talk to the manager, who happened to just approach the till area. Clearly backed her staff up, unsurprisingly, TO denied the part of the conversation where she'd incredulously enquired about me even having an email, and tried to withhold my paper receipt. I just stated to please give me my receipt but I was furious! Customer service non existent. I understand why they want to send receipts but me saying no should have been accepted surely, and not pushed on me, in a snotty manner

Both TO and manager late teens/early 20s, probably working for NW on not much above so I wouldn't take it further but it's really annoyed me!

YABU she was just trying to do her job
YANBU Terrible customer service

I’ve stopped shopping at Argos for similar reasons - if you need to return something they don’t give you any physical receipt at the point of return but say it will be emailed to you. No thanks, don’t want to take a risk on that proof of return being lost in the ether thanks very much.

You're.

Too-shay

TeabySea · 23/01/2025 23:44

I just say I don't have email. So far, it's all been okay. Not sure what I'll do if I go to a shop and they say they don't do paper receipts. Probably not shop there again.

Notgivenuphope · 23/01/2025 23:48

dreadful conduct. you won't get an answer but I would email head office. it should have ended with 'paper copy please'

I was told that New look are going totally digital and not going to give out paper receipts anymore. They got very annoyed with me when I told them no sorry I didn't want them tracking my purchases and my email was none of their business and requested my paper receipt!! I seen in a paper their shutting stores and from their attitude towards people it's no wonder, puts you off shopping with them.

You said to a shop assistant that they was tracking your purchases. You do realise shop assistants have zero say in anything right

JandamiHash · 23/01/2025 23:52

New Look are unbearable for this.

I’ve set up an email address for receipts with a rude address about their practices. I don’t give a shit if they think I’m childish. It sends the right message

This is brilliant!!

Is it 🙄

DontPushMeCos · 24/01/2025 00:02

New Look does not need your contact details and a paper receipt is normal fs - it’s insanity all the data and email addresses companies are collecting- sometimes they don’t even know what to do with the data they’ve already got 🤯 I am in full solidarity- I’ve thought ‘I want to anonymously purchase this item -like I’ve always been able to- oh no till roll? You could put a new one in? Like how many months since you put till roll in?’ When the 20 yr old shop assistant gets to my age- they’ll be drowning in 20years of spam emails - or just the rising sea from the flipping ‘cloud’s carbon footprint!

Ariela · 24/01/2025 00:06

What you do is this:

'I know it's crap that you're targeted to get everyone's email, but I really don't want to be on your company's mailing list so can you just print me a paper copy and if I take your name I'll try and remember to give you a good review on the website.' with a smile.

Works every time

I suspect based on this that you were a lot more abrupt and patronising than you’re letting on here.

Giving them your email for a receipt is not consent for them to send you marketing emails without your permission, there are strict rules around this.

I’ve always had great service from New Look. The staff may be young but they’re helpful and quick.

I would email New Look with all the details.

I wouldn't. Because they won't care and thar will give what they wanted in the first place....her email address.

Op. You're right. I can't believe she actually said 'don't talk to me

@namechangetheworld did you come on just to be deliberately oppositional to the many people saying they've had a similar experience? OP did absolutely nothing wrong. She didn't discourage, she questioned her on things that were none of her business.

What law says you have to give your email address to buy a TV. I bought one last year and I'm 99% sure I wouldn't have given my email address. Is that new?

My parents don't even have email addresses, does that mean they can't have a new TV

It used to be you had to give your actual address to buy a TV, the data was forwarded to TV licensing. Had an amusing 15 minutes in Curry’s when we lived in Europe but bought a TV in Britain to take home. I explained I didn’t live in Britain, we need your address. OK it’s long address in a foreign language. Can you spell that? The whole thing, letter for letter. And who would know if it was indeed a real address? Or did I just throw in a few words for body parts..

The worker's age is irrelevant, as is her pay level.

Quite. It's interesting another poster called her patronising for saying she didn't want to take it out on the teenage NMW shop worker, but others think that means OP isn't entitled to good customer service.

BlueScrunchies · 24/01/2025 00:35

I have had this, and hate it. I haven’t bought an item from NL in months because this really puts me off. Tend to just go to H&M now where they have introduced self checkout.

Also, the environment claims are rubbish, you can’t tell me the carbon footprint of a bit of till roll is more than the barrage of emails they will send as a result of having my email and the energy costs involved in storing my data in the cloud for years and years. Absolute bollocks.

Regarding lack of proof of purchase with a receipt: is there some proof of purchase from entries on bank/credit card statements?
No use if you have paid cash mind!

No, itl only show money going out of your account that day, not for what.

ChicLilacSeal · 24/01/2025 01:05

I wonder if it's legal to refuse to give a paper receipt for goods purchased.

And what about old people who aren't on the internet? I know two people in their mid-eighties who are healthy enough to go out and about shopping, and might buy something for grandchildren in New Look but who don't have email addresses.

Don’t just vote with feet - email head office!!

If EVERYONE emailed head office, instead of voting with their feet, then I believe that would stand a better chance of the "choice factor" being available.

It's wrong to intimidate a shopper into email receipt only.
I do think that the till operator is trained to ask for an email address as a first resort, and they probably don't see an issue with that.

However, I don't care if the TO is young or old, it's no excuse to be rude and to make the shopper feel such negative emotions.

I've also been asked (a lot) even if I want a receipt, which to me, is mind boggling.

How many times have I checked a paper receipt to find an error in the amount I was charged... loads!
So if I hadn't had a receipt, then I could've come away home, having paid too much.

IchWill · 24/01/2025 01:33

I've had this at New Look. She kept insisting they needed an email address and I kept insisting I needed a paper receipt.

She point blank refused to give me a paper receipt and said they categorically do not give out paper receipts.

So, I asked what if they serve a little old lady who doesn't have email. She said they'd have to give her a paper receipt. So I replied that I don't have email. 😂

She sighed, rolled her eyes and printed a receipt with a right strop.

It's infuriating.

That's actually a genius idea! What is it: [email protected]? 😂😂

I worked for a senator in the US, so it was like customer service.
People were usually nice.
Sometimes folks would call and complain and call me filthy names because their driving license expired and they hadn’t renewed it and somehow that was my fault.
One man struggled with a problem for over a year and in desperation called my office. It took me one phone call & 15 minutes to solve.
When I called him back and gave him the good news, he cried. So it did feel good to help people.
All you have to be is kind.
I think these girls would be better suited in the field of whips & chains or something.
