Horrible interaction in New Look

lanbro · 23/01/2025 20:12

Just bought something in New Look, interaction at the till as follows:

Till operator: what's your email for your receipt?
Me: no thanks, I'd like a paper copy please
TO: it's a digital receipt
Me: I know, but I'd prefer a paper copy please
TO: what, you don't have an email address?!
Me: of course, but I'd like a paper copy
TO: fine, it'll take a minute. Why don't you want to give me your email?
Me: I get 100s of spam emails, I don't need anymore thanks
TO: OK, no need to get angry!
Me: I'm not angry but I'm cross that you're being so persistent when I said I didn't want to (may have sounded louder than intended)
TO: don't speak to me like that! That's it I've had enough, don't talk to me!

I said fine, I'd talk to the manager, who happened to just approach the till area. Clearly backed her staff up, unsurprisingly, TO denied the part of the conversation where she'd incredulously enquired about me even having an email, and tried to withhold my paper receipt. I just stated to please give me my receipt but I was furious! Customer service non existent. I understand why they want to send receipts but me saying no should have been accepted surely, and not pushed on me, in a snotty manner

Both TO and manager late teens/early 20s, probably working for NW on not much above so I wouldn't take it further but it's really annoyed me!

YABU she was just trying to do her job
YANBU Terrible customer service

I’ve set up an email address for receipts with a rude address about their practices. I don’t give a shit if they think I’m childish. It sends the right message

I'm taking this advice!

MMUmum · 24/01/2025 20:00

Local Dunelm asked for my email to send an e receipt, it never arrived! I rang the store and they insisted they couldn't resend it and didn't have a record so I could collect a paper one, I always insist on paper receipts now

You said to a shop assistant that they was tracking your purchases. You do realise shop assistants have zero say in anything right

Yes I told shop assistant that I didn't want new look tracking my purchases and sending me targeted email advertisements that choke up my email address! I know shop assistants have zero say but they feed back to their managers who feed back to theirs and so on.

PeepDeBeaul · 24/01/2025 20:10

There are several free email address hosts out there. We created an address that's literally "receipts@xxxxx.com". (Not xxxxxx obvs, Im not dumb enough to post the proper thing). We quote that in all the shops. I go though the inbox from time to time and mass delete the spam.

OP is right to be annoyed though...you were right to be assertive.

ludders01 · 24/01/2025 20:19

I had a similar experience in a new look in Bristol recently. Went in to collect an online order and the order literally got slammed on the desk. There was no hello, please, thank you or goodbye. Went into Superdrug as my next stop and the customer service by the meet and great girl on the door was outstanding. So much so that I had a moan to her about how awful it had been in new look. It’s really put me off shopping in there.

ludders01 · 24/01/2025 20:30

Also to add to that I’m currently on crutches and the queue wasn’t particularly long but for some reason they were taking ages to serve people but there was no apology for the long wait. It was a girl in her 20’s I’d say, the older staff seem a bit better customer service wise.

Sandflea9900 · 24/01/2025 20:30

I hate shops that do this, it’s increasingly common. Dunelm are particularly prone to it. I acquiesced once, the emailed receipt never arrived and then I had a heck of a time when I needed to return an item as I had no receipt. I always get a paper receipt now. If they won’t provide one, I don’t buy.

UtterlyOtterly · 24/01/2025 20:41

In shops where I think it might be likely they ask for an email I ask if I can have a paper receipt before even putting the item on the counter. Then if they say no I just hand them the item and walk out.

There is absolutely nothing I need enough to want to give my email details to a poorly trained shop worker.

UtterlyOtterly · 24/01/2025 21:13

I think I'll pop into NL tomorrow to buy a pair of socks and see what the response is.

No they don't. Iv worked in retail for 8 years I could count on one hand how many times iv spoke to my manager

Don't be that person who purposely goes in for an argument

Pastalina · 24/01/2025 21:35

I had similar in New Look. I never give my email to avoid spam and the girl at the till looked so annoyed. Weird.

Oodlesandoodlesofnoodles · 24/01/2025 21:44

I hate that. Although I do find email receipts are handy for tax returns.

millymoo1202 · 24/01/2025 21:50

Try returning something to peacocks, Spanish Inquisition. Asked for my name, address and email. I asked why do you need this was told it’s so it matches up to your bank account! Honestly must think we are stupid just stood my ground and said not willing to give all that information

Naunet · 24/01/2025 22:20

New Look is an awful company, who have an absolute nerve to claim they care about the environment

Whatinthedoopla · 24/01/2025 22:42

New look seriously have the worst customer service.

I have a Bluealight card, and have done so for about the last 10 years, and it's been the only place to ask for ID, as the till lady said my card isn't enough. I have never been asked for ID to prove who I am, especially as the policy says just to show this card

What an excellent idea!

CalmFox · 24/01/2025 23:58

I had the same experience with new look, bought a 7.99 t-shirt paid by card, girl on till asked me for my email address for a receipt. I said I want a paper one, girl resonded we don't have paper receipts anymore....I replied I don't have an email. Eye roll from her. Asked for a refund on tshirt they then wanted my name and address!!! FFS. I put some random address on the PAPER refund😃🤔

Happyher · 23/01/2025 20:29

My email address is basically my name so I don’t like giving it out in public, it’s up to each of us to decide who we give our personal email to.

I'm the same plus my name is very unusual so don't really want randoms knowing it. I know I can't have total control but along with my surname they both do stand out. Fortunately I've not yet have anyone push for my email when purchasing an item. I did for a while accidently choose to have email receipts from M&S using my sparks card. Found it an nuisance so reverted back to paper though have since realised If I use my Sparks card I can see my receipts on the drop down menu on the app under digital receipts so if I do lose my paper one I can use the digital one.

SuperMaybe · 25/01/2025 05:57

You can easily have more than one email.

I have one that I only use for important financial stuff and about three or four others I regularly use for decreasingly important things.

Sites I don't trust such as Mumsnet get their own unique email so if their security is compromised (again!!) it doesn't matter to me.

I also use the the iOS hide my email address function and also throw away email addresses such as gorillamail which easily allow me to use a temporary email address.

People owe it to themselves to look after their own online safety. Using one email address for everything seems pointlessly risky to me.

...and don't get me started on people that use easy to guess passwords or who use the same passwords for multiple things.

RedRiverShore5 · 25/01/2025 06:45

I also tend to use lots of different email addresses and find the Apple hide my email useful for a lot of websites but I'm old.

TheAirfryerQueen · 25/01/2025 06:45

About 3 years ago now, I went into ProCook to buy a wooden spatula. That was it. It was about £3 to buy. The young woman on the till wanted my email address over this tiny purchase. I refused. I said, it's only three quid, it doesn't matter, I don't need a receipt.

But I need to issue you one, and I need to send it by email, she insisted.

No, I said breezily, I've given you three quid in cash. That ends our transaction, doesn't it?

But, but...

Look, if you really must give me a receipt, why not give me a paper one? It's going in the bin anyway.

(Confused face) OK, i'll issue you a paper one.

Great! Thank you.

She issues me a paper receipt, and I leave.

As long as money has been exchanged for the goods, that's the end of the matter. Generally for goods under £10 I don't bother keeping the receipt anyway, It was such a performance, and blatant data harvesting, all over a bloody spatula.

Uniqlo is another. They encourage you to use those bloody self service tills (cutting staff on the proper tills) and you can't get a proper receipt with them, they ask for your bloody email address instead. Got caught out there, never again. When the email came through I took a screenshot then unsubscribed. Fudge that noise.

RedRiverShore5 · 23/01/2025 20:34

A lot of their shops are closing, hopefully they won't be around much longer, ours closed, dreadful shop

Dreadful business all round. My goddaughter had a weekend job there in 6th form. She was often called an hour before her shift and told she wasn’t needed and then not paid. Bloody awful. Tesco never did that to my DS.

vincettenoir · 25/01/2025 10:04

They’ve never refused to give a paper receipt when asked. But I would be annoyed if they refused me a paper receipt too.

howaboutchocolate · 25/01/2025 11:09

@Alina3

I'm not giving them my email address.
Anyway I emailed head office

So now they have your email address anyway?

Most shops have my email address, my full name and my full address because I order things online. It's really never been a problem.
