Should she replace it? SHE RETURNED IT!

Goodness me. I can’t believe I am back with an update. After starting the small claims process, look what turned up on my doorstep today! My Dyson Airwrap!!!

I hadn’t heard a single peep from my friend since my last updates on the previous thread.

What a shock I got when I got a notification from my ring doorbell this afternoon saying there was person at my front door. I checked and it was my friend sheepishly dropping a bag on my doorstep!

I was at work and knew I wasn’t going to be home for a few more hours. I sent my neighbour a text message asking her to take it in. I couldn’t wait to get home from work to see what she had dropped off 🤣 was it the original? Was it a brand new replacement? Was it the £150 replacement from Facebook?

When I got home and checked it out it appeared to be my original airwrap. I tested it and it worked just fine (so much for the sister spilling the wine!) and I checked the serial number and it definitely is mine!

What an absolute rollercoaster! I wasn’t sure if I should text my friend acknowledging the eventual return of the airwrap or not?

My friend asked if she could borrow my Dyson airwrap for her wedding as money was tight and she couldn’t afford a hairdresser. It was a small wedding...

Hang on OP… I thought the original box was blue ? @Langarg

Edited

It is, it’s the same box that has been returned. Another poster said on her phone it looks black in the photo. It’s a deep navy blue!

Now we know she just stole it rather than accidentally broke it this story reminds me so much of that lady who's new designer glasses went missing on a girls weekend away. Her friend claimed she had no idea where they went then was seen out and about wearing them! That friend kept telling ridiculous lie after lie before sheepishly returning them too.

I feel like you and that lady would have a lot to bond over 😂

Revenge aside, what's your next move? You HAVE to challenge her about it.

I have followed since the start OP. I admire you for never losing it at your friend and accusing her which is what I would have done. I think this is why you achieved the outcome you did.

Agree that MN is so helpful. I’ve learned a lot being on here - that I’m not the only one that is taken advantage of, lied to, has people that are bad friends. I think also you see completely different views and morals & how people deflect situations & it makes you realise how different we all are.

Anyway, even though it’s a happy ending of sorts, I’m sorry for you. It’s unfortunate that you’ve had to go through all of this, find out your friend is a liar that would steal from you, discover her character flaws and had to go through a month of this.

I am so glad you can reward yourself with beautiful hair that you deserve. I hope in time you are able to trust and find a friend at your level. You sound like a really good person and I hope you find friends who are as generous, patient, trusting and kind and not just people who exploit those qualities.

“Toasting” your future with your luxurious hair and good quality friendships… 🥂

Thank you for your lovely comments. I definitely have learned a lot from this situation and am grateful for the support of fellow MN’ers. I can be a bit of a people pleaser and tend to always see the good in people. Before posting it never even crossed my mind that it was her intention to steal it from me!

I actually find it quite hard to make friends but have been really lucky that in the last 6 months or so since starting a new hobby I’ve made some lovely new friends. If it wasn’t for that I’d be feeling disappointed at losing such a long friendship and would maybe continue the friendship through fear of being lonely!

Did you have to pay a solicitor to write the letter before action or did you write it yourself

Damn I really want an Airwrap now...

I remember the glasses thread, I missed the conclusion. So she returned them!!!

I'm convinced this was a very clever marketing person.

ABunchOfBadBitches · 23/01/2025 13:59

WOW. So she stole it basically. How bloody good is this Airwrap?!

Oh no, it’s like that blue/ gold dress all over again 🫠🫠😂

**please no comments about what colour that dress actually was. No one cares 😂😂

It was gold. Deal with it.

Send it to Dyson for what?!

Dyson will repair it for you or send a refurbished one to you for something like £100.
The woman said it had liquid damage and now it has turned up apparently working. I’d be worried that it has had damage and is unsafe or has had a crappy repair and is unsafe.

pimplebum · 23/01/2025 14:19

thanks for updating , this has taken up more headspace than I care to admit in real life !

i can’t understand why everyone is so sure it was an attempted theft?? Whilst she sounds like a shit friend and shocking lier, you need to be some kind of crack head loon to be a thief like this ?
surely fixing it was cheaper than replacing?

WoolySnail · 23/01/2025 14:21

Gettingbysomehow · 23/01/2025 10:13

I don't lend anything ever. I've had too many terrible experiences including a first edition antique book a "friend" begged to borrow for a week and which was returned with multiple coffee rings on the cover.

Sacrilege 😱

I think for me it was all the lying and the way the lies kept getting more complex with radio silence in between... now that the 'friend' has returned it it's hard to work out what else she could have been trying to pull other than keeping it, unless she just wanted to hang on to it for another event she had coming up - but then I'd have thought she'd have just asked. The sheer CF-ery of it is hard to take in, though, I agree!

She lied! Haven't you realised that yet? She simply wanted to keep it and concocted various stories (first - left in hotel, second - sister borrowed it and spilt wine on it) in the hope she would get away with it. She even sent the OP links to a second-hand one! Disgusting person and certainly no friend.

MJconfessions · 23/01/2025 05:24

You definitely should tell mutual friends otherwise she will get in with her version of events and turn them against you. She’ll say you tried to sue her and ruined her wedding.

Agree.

Let them know what has really been going on.

PrettyParrot · 23/01/2025 14:42

I am glad you got it back OP :) however I would definitely mention it to mutual friends, in amused tones, to prevent her contacting them first with tales of your (imagined) unreasonableness.

This!!!

diddl · 23/01/2025 14:55

Must be tempting to message & say "I saw you were at my door yesterday-what did you want?"

What would you say to friends though to warn them?

She'll probably spin it all as a misunderstanding.

Some will probably take sides.

It was obvious that she deliberately lied and intended to just keep it for herself, because if she had genuinely lost or broken it she would have immediately offered to replace it with a brand new one or at least pay Dyson to repair it.

That's what a decent honest person does.

The person who says nothing until pushed then changes story and blames others before finally admitting they had it all along and were caught out on their thievery and lying is an utter cunty lowlife.

It’s so weird how differently people think and operate. For me, my friends are my happy place - like the family I chose myself. I wouldn’t dream of stealing or scamming them like this. I can’t fathom that people like this do exist to take advantage of friends.

like in her head, I’m assuming she probably calculated it as a wedding gift or something. Like something she was entitled to have.

I get that Dyson products are expensive but a used one, a hair product at that? Like that isn’t worth scamming a friend over to me. I’m not rich but personally I have the same model - I paid it off for £30 a month over 12 months, it’s not completely unattainable to those on a budget.

I agree she thought that OP was a soft touch and would write it off as a wedding present... or say don't worry you have so many expenses with your wedding or something.
It looks like your Letter before Action did the trick OP.
I'm glad you got it back.
Its horrible the amount of stress this must have causes, all the worrying did she take it/should I give her the benefit of the doubt
Whilst she sat back and enjoyed using it and kept thinking up more excuses.

I think I would tell your mutual friends.. but I bet someone like this will be telling them some woppers about God Knows What (She deliberately ruined my wedding) and then they will be in the same position... is this true/should I give her the benefit of the doubt. and so on.

I don't think that's extra drama. I used to think keeping quiet was the more mature thing to do, and maybe it would be if it was a genuine mistake/accident from someone who was normally OK etc...but considering what's she's put you through for the last month, all the worry, now I think it's part of standing up for yourself. She is a liar and will continue to lie. I don't think she should be permitted to lie to your mutual friends about on top of what she's already done. No need for big details but they will wonder about your change in the level of contact.
