To wonder if Starmer can survive the vibe-shift?

Trump has been going hell for leather since his inauguration it seems, things are changing fast - Trump likes the UK, but he doesn't like Starmer. Starmer seems out of sync with the changing tide, and seems (to me) to get it wrong and make it worse everytime he opens his mouth. AIBU in wondering how long Starmer can hang on?

How DARE you lie about things I've said to try and smear me - I challenge you to find where I said any such thing. I made clear that I meant those who posted on social media expressing their discomfort about migration levels have been jailed for dissidence when hundreds walk free after trying to incite violence and threatening GC woman with death and rape. I made clear that I was not referring to anyone who had been violence or called for violence and that I abhor violence.

DO NOT spread misinformation about what I have said.

I made clear that I was not referring to anyone who had been violence or called for violence and that I abhor violence

As per pp you used these two specimens as an example of political dissidents.

I can't imagine the UK is even registering remotely on Trump's radar at the moment for any reason.

He's got big tech company favours to dish out, the war in Gaza, Russia, the US border, the Panama Canal, trans issues, deleting the US from a bunch of different international organisations, launching his crypto, and a million other things. Plus he still needs to fit in daily McDonald's, yelling on social media, and golf.

He gives no shits about a minor ally thousands of miles away who isn't actually doing anything of note in any way. He isn't even meeting with Starmer for another month.

And no one in the UK can do anything with an election 3 years away.

HollyKnight · 22/01/2025 14:37

Why would people in the UK care about what Trump thinks? Maybe if his own country wasn't such a shitshow he might have an opinion worth listening to.

Starmer unfortunately has very, very quickly turned out to be shit (and I've never voted Conservative) I do wonder though how Obama ever became President in such a crazy places as the US - I wonder if he might come over here? I really think he'd be appreciated more and we could really do with someone with charisma and intelligence to lead the country.

I think that was painfully obvious a long time before we went to the polls.

Trump’s victory is the kiss of death for wokeism being a political force worldwide, they ll never win another election, whenever the next elections are.

And with or without Trump, considering Starmer’s rate of shooting himself in the foot, he won’t last until the next election, he has no political sense.

Allthebrokenplaces · 22/01/2025 14:44

OP, who do you see replacing him? Angela Raynor?

Weefreetiffany · 22/01/2025 14:46

the vocal toxic minority is online, shouting louder than the reasonable people. Here comes the dystopian technofascist future nobody wants.

The president of the united states does not get to choose who we have as leader. you DO NOT run our country. It's none of your business, so unkindly piss off.

PreciousRighteousTeacher · 22/01/2025 14:50

👏👏👏👏@Tittat50 absolutely spot on. So many red herrings! I am so glad you have said this. I have been thinking exactly the same. The news reporting has been incredibly frustrating. This perpetrator should have been sectioned and held in a secure hospital long before he ever got to the stage of being able to commit the horrific crimes in Southport that he did. It should have been patently obvious to any rational person that he was well on the path to committing an atrocity for a long time.

User09678 · 22/01/2025 14:06

I don't. But we've always had a "special" relationship with the US I don't see the two of them working particularly well together

Might pee you off a bit but both Starmer and Lammy have met Trump and apparently got on like a house on fire. Contrary to the UK media there is no issue with Peter Mandelson going to the US either. It’s all fluff designed to create the impression that UK is in a sticky position with the Trump administration. Why native Brits would be almost willing for there to be an issue, slavering at the idea that a democratically elected UK government be toppled, god only knows.

Yes, the OPs post is rather bemusing.

MaryWhitehouseExperienced · 22/01/2025 14:54

Are you implying that Trump has some kind of power to get rid of Starmer?

QuimCarrey · 22/01/2025 14:55

I think some people just spend a disproportionate amount of time on Twitter, or whatever it's called now.

AnonymousBleep · 22/01/2025 14:56

Trump is a massive prick and the USA going collectively mad should not impact on UK politics. Starmer is fine. But there are people on here and in the right wing media just endlessly trying to flog the message that he's in trouble. It's actually really boring.

IdaGlossop · 22/01/2025 14:57

In my opinion, the main impact of Trump on UK politics is likely to be empowering the right (Reform, those who sympathise with Reform, and those who are shifting in that direction) to be more vocal. In just two days in power, Trump has shown that it is easy to withdraw from international organisations and agreements (World Health Organisation, Paris Climate Accord), give orders to deport illegal immigrants, cancel DEI initiatives in government departments, declare that everyone is either male or female, and start initiatives to cut public spending.

However, it's very early days. Trump and Musk will fall out sooner or later. Protectionism will increase prices and fuel inflation. There will be skills shortages as illegal migrants are held where we don't yet know. Women will suffer health issues and give birth to babies created through rape because of the lack of availability of abortions.

So it's good news and bad news for the right in the UK but will have absolutely no impact on Sir Keir until 2029, as previous posters have said.

Wait until

there are a few measles epidemics
Diabetics are dying through no insulin
Pollution on the up from unfettered oil & gas drilling
Crops rotting in the fields
Healthcare unaffordable for all
Zero workers rights

…and let’s see how much people want to follow the US then.

I just cannot take nonsense like this seriously.

It's mysteriously as if the right wing media (80% owned by Conservative party donors) doesn't like the Labour government and is doing everything in its power to make them seem unpopular.

Gosh Max, I am glad you are here to give us the inside track on current affairs. Who needs newspapers and journals when Max is here to tell us the truth. I feel much better now that someone who really knows the Trump administration has chimed in. I guess that second helping of chicken meant something after all.

Thé majority of the responses on this thread show why Kamala lost.

Exactly right!

Wonderfulstuff · 22/01/2025 15:16

We have about another 4 years of the current Government who have a massive majority so I think, barring some sort of mass death/huge scandal that prompts 100s of by-elections, labour will 'hang on' just fine. In 4 years time world politics is likely to look very different from today and who knows where that will go. I really hope we don't have electoral interference from Musk et al. Facebook already have a dodgy track record via the Cambridge Analytica scandal. I'm interested to see if there's going to be a big shift away from social media.

The electoral systems of European counties mean that coalition governments are far more likely which is why extremist parties can end up with a decent smattering of seats - they are designed to stop one party from being dominant as happened in the lead up to the second world war. It's also a reason, somewhat that against the grain, Reform have aligned with the Greens and Lib Dems in wanting a different electoral system. Sadly with Musk's love of a good neo nazi party I am worried about the rise of the BNP or variations of.

You can't possibly blame the media for all the mistakes Labour have made? What about the freebies? Tulip Siddiq? Louise Haigh? Are they the 'right wing' media's fault too?

Of course not. Labour has made mistakes. It will make more mistakes.

Show me a government that hasn't.

But OP and posters like them are endlessly starting threads about Starmer being brought down and/or hinting at various conspiracy theories.

Similarly, the way the right wing press presents stories is very skewed. Everything is crowed over as a catastrophe or a cover up.

Labour aren't perfect, but neither were the Conservatives while in Government, and in comparison to the (ridiculous and disproportionate) slamming Labour get every day in the press, they were fawned all over.

Imagine the response if Keir dumped his wife while she was suffering with cancer for a younger woman. It was totally AOK when Johnson did it though.

I agree with what Louise Haigh said anyway. P&O are an absolute disgrace.
