To wonder if Starmer can survive the vibe-shift?

Trump has been going hell for leather since his inauguration it seems, things are changing fast - Trump likes the UK, but he doesn't like Starmer. Starmer seems out of sync with the changing tide, and seems (to me) to get it wrong and make it worse everytime he opens his mouth. AIBU in wondering how long Starmer can hang on?

Did you vote in the last GE? We in the UK don’t have a presidential system. My ballot had at least 5 options to vote for. You can’t complain we don’t have a democracy if you don’t vote, and I’ve never heard of a constituency with only two candidates. I’m in favour of a more proportional system, but a democracy isn’t defined by you getting your own way or not.

I suggest you learn more about electoral systems. I did a module on this at uni, it was fascinating, I can highly recommend it.

You think the general public pays much attention to PMQs?!

The idea he's doing well at them is generous to say the least

Any coverage of PMQs generally results in mockery and some funny lines about his demeanour

I only see posters go on about how 'well' he is doing on here

trivialMorning · 25/01/2025 10:53

The Welsh Senedd elections in I think 14 months time will be interesting - they're getting more national media attention already.

The electoral process has changed again - so will need to look that up - but polls are saying Labour lost ground and Reform and Plaid Cymru are near them,

trivialMorning · 25/01/2025 10:54

I don't think I've ever heard less about PMQs than in recent months. Not sure if it's a change in my media consumption habits or there's been less focus lately.

Not what you were asked.

You said, in response to a point about Starmer doing better than Kemi at PMQs, that if he were doing so well the polls would be better.

So does that mean you think the general public are basing their preferences on PMQs?

EasternStandard · 25/01/2025 11:00

@QuimCarrey yep I think it all feeds into the public sentiment for him

If it's in the DM and people are laughing over it it'll feed into what they think generally

Have you any information about how many people see Daily Mail coverage of PMQs specifically?

I couldn't find it on a quick google, only the general numbers for the paper and the website. Which as with any paper obviously includes people who only click for the celeb gossip, buy it for the crossword etc. But perhaps you have figures to hand, since you evidently think it's significant.

EasternStandard · 25/01/2025 11:07

@QuimCarrey as you are interested feel free to find what you need

But yes his ability does generate content and btl comments, which are mostly laughing etc

In fact if you want a flip side to the posts that glow over how well he's going in here just pick any KS article on there

The DM is well read and the comments and top line stories show enough do engage

PandoraSox · 25/01/2025 11:12

I don't know about laughing at the PM, but some posts on here are unintentionally hilarious 🤣

Of course they are.

If in doubt emoji it out Grin

It won't help him much. He really is tanking..

Badenoch was close to tears when Starmer humiliated her about her hitherto total lack of interest in victims of grooming gangs. She is mostly terrible at PMQs. Her lack of experience really shows.

Mind you this was unintentionally hilarious

I think that totally depends on your sources and the angle they present it in - I’m basing mine on watching PMQs, regularly.

EasternStandard · 25/01/2025 11:42

@Sherbs12 if you're a Labour voter as those who say he's doing well appear to be then that's not a surprise

It doesn't mean it's the case. Others will view his style and come to another conclusion

And currently he seems to have fewer like you and more who don't think he's doing well, not just PMQs but generally

Sherbs12 · 25/01/2025 11:57

I’m very aware of how bias works, thank you; regardless of my voting background (which you have no knowledge of) and party politics aside, I’d still be able to have enough critical thinking skills and objectivity to know that what I’m watching and seeing each week at PMQs is not Starmer being ‘constantly humiliated’ as you’ve previously described.

He did an idiot move by replacing the current ambassador with Mandelson.

Apparently the old ambassador got on really well with Trumps team.

Like it or not, everyone is going to have to manage Trump and his policies.

Get it right and we can be in a useful bridge position between the US and Europe. Get it wrong and we will be screwed by both sides.

Starmer just doesn't look up to the challenge IMO.

I must confess I didn't understand appointing Mandelson. I feel like Starmer is a decent man just really bad with understanding optics and the mood of the country.

Unfortunately, I can't find what you've based your claim about the DM on.

Does this mean you don't have any information on the numbers that are actually seeing the DM coverage of PMQs, but you've nonetheless decided it's an explanation for the polls?

The DM website is clearly popular, but obviously that in itself doesn't tell us anything about the wider influence of their coverage on one, specific issue.

PandoraSox · 25/01/2025 12:08

I see the Conservative Home poll showing Badenoch's popularity in her own party tanking is being conveniently ignored.

You're talking about another poster, it was someone else talking about humiliation for another politician.

I said people not everyone thinks he's doing well, they either mock or find descriptions funny. I don't think you are anymore objective tbf

Yeah I thought Mandelson was an odd choice too.

Re PMQs. I watch most weeks and it’s usually an utter bore fest. I know Boris Johnson is hated on here but it was far more entertaining with him in it. I don’t think the vast majority of people pay any attention to it.

I mean, it's just not very relevant to a discussion about a vibe shift. Yes, I think her performance has been disappointing but irrelevant to observing a movement in the general population who had already given up on the Tories in July.

Agree with your last sentence, I've not seen any recent evidence that the electorate judge it as important.

EasternStandard · 25/01/2025 12:17

Tbf on what's happening with the opposition the most recent poll below shows if you do little Labour will still drop to third

Never interrupt your enemy.. and all that
